Felgie & Maz Get a New Deal @ 98.5

Whether you like them or hate them, is it surprising they got extended? They frequently beat the Big Show in the key demographics.

I haven't listened to the Big Show since Holley came on board (mostly because it is dead period in my sports radio listening), but at least up until Holley moved to the Big Show, Felger and Maz were the lesser of two evils.

Listening to my IPOD more and more.. they both stink.

New deal for Felger and Massarotti - The Buzz - Boston.com sports news

Gawd, more of these morons.
Oh well, less time in Purgatory for listeners. :p

It's not really a surprise. Unfortunately, WEEI blinked, and we've now got a worse lineup over there, since the revamped Big Show sucks and the D&H replacements aren't nearly as good as their predecessors.

There's now only 1 sports talk slot worth listening to on Boston radio, and that's the D.A. slot at night, when fewer people are listening.

98.5 has been a disaster for Boston Sports talk radio.

Got to give Felger props for honesty for once. Doesn't know what he'd be doing if not for this radio gig...LOL

I still think Boston Sports Radio is better for the 98.5 because there is far more Pats talk than ever. WEEI was bad before 98.5 and it is bad now. So I don't see that much of a difference.

BTW, I don't get why you hate Felger so much. You guys are on the same page on a lot of issues that comes to the Patriots from how they approach free agency to who is right in the CBA battle. If I was to say which radio personality you are closest to based soley on what side of the argument you are on with several key issues, I would say Felger.

I am not meaning this to be an insult (since you hate Felger so much, I assume you will take it that way), but just looking at many of the issues on the board and your opinions which are similiar to Felger. You say the Patriots cheap out on their players which is Felger's biggest gripe. You question the direction of the team since 2004 and so does Felger. You are firmly on the player's side on the CBA deal and so is Felger (in fact, both of you are so vigilent that you cannot comprehend how anyone could be otherwise without being bias).

Minority view here. I like their show and I'm glad they got extended. They talk sports, lots more Pats than EEI ever did, and they don't scream at each other. I thought I would hate Mazz, but I don't, and I have always found Felger to be humorous in a self-depricating way. Don't even bother to give the Big Show the time of day anymore.

I agree, I find if I take Felger as a show he's putting on and not a reasonable mans opinion, then I find him entertaining. All in all Id rather listen to music and only check to see if they have a good guest, if not, its music the rest of the ride.

WEEI was pretty good before. You keep making the "bad" claim, but it's simply not true. What has happened is that people got familiar with the WEEI format, and that always leads to calls for change. When you combine that with the pessimistic bent of New Englanders and the FM signal, you get the kind of crap that has 98.5 doing well. I expected WEEI to ride out the storm and wait for 98.5 to implode, which it probably would have, but they chickened out and ruined their lineup, and that will keep 98.5 around.

First, I don't say that the Patriots cheap out on players, as a whole. I say that people can make that argument based on the data, but that I don't agree with them. Now, if you want to talk about individual players, every team cheaps out sometimes, and it used to be a point of that Patriots fans would point to with pride via the old "If they won't take a hometown discount, we don't need them!" commentw. I won't go into the rest of your points equating me to Felger, but this one needed to be dealt with, IMO.

Now, my problem with Felger is that he's a crap stirrer. He's not making his comments based upon honestly held beliefs, or even just taking an occasional devil's advocate approach. He's consistently spouting just for ratings. I find that sort of approach distasteful, whether it's done by Felger, some talking head at ESPN, or anyone else. He's also a lousy interviewer, and a lousy radio host in general.

since the revamped Big Show sucks

I should preface all these WEEI posts with an inevitable we'll agree to disagree on the subject, but...

You preferred listening to the Big O and his buffoons yell and scream over each other? Granted, he still does that with Holley - but the show has been vastly improved simply by Holley's inclusion, it's much more toned down and focused. I actually find myself listening to EEI every once in a while in the afternoons for the first time since 98.5 came onto the horizon.

But if you miss the dynamic of the old Big O, Smerlas and the like, then there are plenty of other ways to achieve listening to a bunch of angry, uninformed, barely intelligible knuckle-draggers speak about sports. Such as, spending time with crazy cousins or uncles, and or hanging out with homeless people. Both, you'll find, will provide similar discussion as the old Big Show.

Quoted for complete truth...

If you listened to Felger more often, you'd realize that this isn't the case. For right or wrong, the guy speaks his mind. Honestly, I don't think he's smart enough to do what you are accusing him of. He has no filter.

anything to get more Patriots and less baseball on the air is a great thing. I can't listen to weei because all they do now is baseball. I'd rather be dead than listen to that.

He speaks his mind but it's an empty one.

He's deliberately obtuse and/or disingenuous on matters salary cap. Inexcusable for someone getting paid well above the average salary.

I for one was addicted to the excellent Sirius NFL radio, that is until the Pats-Jets debacle when I couldn't deal with football for a while.

I listen to Felger far too often as it is, because of commercials, locations, bad segments elsewhere and the like. And Felger is always making crap up. Hell, you can frequently tell just by his tonal inflections.

I listened to him today

"Well, it's only 4 games, and they don't matter at all, BUT....."

Hell, he's all but admitting that he's just stirring the pot.

I can't think of a single "buffoon" that was rotating in over at WEEI who did not have far more sports knowledge, at least within their field, than Felger.

The Big show had a rotating group of guest 'hosts', all of whom were more knowledgeable than Felger. That format allowed for a more turbulent back and forth because Ordway is a good enough host that he could usually control it. Felger isn't even good enough to control Maz when he gets going, and Maz is nothing but Felger's pet monkey on that show.

To call the rotating co-hosts on WEEI uninformed when comparing them to Felger is just ridiculous.

That is your OPINION. My OPINION is different. I felt the format of WEEI is outdated and boring. You felt different. Why people switched to 98.5 is up for debate unless you have focus groups to support your theory. Personally, I feel a lot of people hated WEEI's format like I do and just didn't have a viable alternative. When Felger was on 890AM, he was the same guy and they could get ratings because of the signal.

You complained about how the Pats treated guys like Brady, Wilfork, and Mankins which was almost word for word to what Felger says on the same topic.

Unless you know what Felger is really thinking, you can't say that. Besides, many of his listeners (or at least callers) agree with him. You can't stir the pot when you have a lot of agreement by your audience.

As for spouting off for ratings, he learned that from WEEI. In the morning, Dennis and Callahan always take different sides of an argument. Not because they disagree, but because it makes better radio. Then they throw Meter in there with the wacked out, moronic side of the argument to allow fans to ridicule. The Big Show has guests on for the sole purpose to spew moronic anti-home team rants just so Ordway can easily shoot him down (see Steve from Fall River, Al from Everett, Dakaota from Braintree, Frank from Glouster, Danny from Quincy, etc.) which got tired before Butch from the Cape passed away. Sorry, but most talk show hosts' true beliefs frequently are not what they say on the air whether is it sports talk, political talk, or whatever. In many cases, if the host gave their 100% honest beliefs, it would be boring radio.

BTW, I don't get why you hate Felger so much.
Felger does not have a shred of intellectual honesty. He simply takes inflammatory positions to call attention to himself. Unfortunately, he's been successful and others imitate him.

He has lowered the level of sports discussions in the Boston area.

Whether I agree with him or not has nothing to do with what I think of him.

My only problem with Felger is that he beats topics into the ground. Otherwise, I like him infinitely better than Ordway.
