Crazy Suggestion: Sit Brady This Sunday

This Friday, BB should announce that Brady is "questionable" with the flu. On Sunday, we make him the #2 QB, and start Cassel.

Why?

The Lions have the WORST pass defense in the NFL. Don't believe their 19th rank against the pass -- that's just because teams are running the clock out all second half. Their 29th in yards per pass attempt, and dead last in opposing passer rating, at 101.2. They are also 2nd to last in interceptions.

I think Cassell could pick the Lions apart. He'd look great. 300+ yards, 3 TDs, an everything.

Now, if teams like the Vikings were considering offering their 1st or 2nd round pick to the Falcons for Matt Schaub, I'd imagine we could get an early 2nd for Cassell at least, if we showcase him right.

With already 2 picks in the 1st round next year, imagine what we could do with another early one?

The game would be better put to use to bring along the Tom Brady-Chad Jackson synchronization operation for the playoff run than building up Cassel for the trade market. The passing game is still a work in progress - as evidenced by the rise and fall of Douglas Gabriel and all of Ben Watson's fumbles last sunday.

I agree 100%. First of all, our top priority should be to WIN! The idea of sitting Tom Brady to increase Cassel's trade value is absolutely nuts.

But, the game also should provide some chances for TB and CJ to gain chemistry.

In fact, I was going to start a thread this week predicting this week will be Chad Jackson's "breakout performance." I've been saying that for a while now, but this week I really mean it. He showed some promise last week, he just needs to get over the nerves and get into the flow of the game.

When he wasn't reaming them for their lack of ball security this week he was drilling into them the importance of taking every game seriously. That has been an issue, inconsistent focus and effort. His priority is to win games and position this team for an extended playoff run. Not to market 2nd string QB's. The time for that will likely come next August in the pre season. I imagine Matt will all but start the Chinabowl game. We aren't in a position to let Matt go just yet anyway since the only other QB on the roster is an older than dirt interception machine. Which is why there will be yet another QB or two taken in the draft this spring. We don't have a viable backup to our backup in the pipeline.

Read in one of the practice notes columns today that he is playing Roy Williams role on the PC this week. He showed less promise this week than he did in week 2. That is what has so many of us believing his breakout game won't be coming this season...

But there have already been dozens of posts about how, once we get the division sown up, we need to focus on getting CJ more involved.

Couldn't agree more. It is imperative that we continue to get CJ involved in this offense. Has he been on the field more every week? Does anybody keep track of this? Opposing defenses have to respect his speed and will be less apt to stuff the box to stop the run. ALA Sanders and the Colts D.

I suspect Dungy is holding out Sanders till the playoffs, just like he held him out all season except for the game against the Pats. Having CJ playing effective football would go along way to countering this move.

Yes, he is on the field more and more each week.

He was featured more last week than any other week. It was a bummer he didn't produce on Sunday, but he certainly showed flashes of what he can do, just by getting open on those two deep balls (the latter should've drawn a PI flag).

Frankly, I feel a lot more comfortable when CJ is on the field. I've noticed when he is on the field, there is a better chance of somebody getting open, I don't know if it's a function of the routes he is running creating holes in the Defense or what, but the more he's out there, the better, IMO.

How did he show less promise? He got open downfield twice in the same game. How many times this season have you seen a Pats receiver not named Ben Watson do that?

And I'm not sure how playing as Roy Williams is a negative thing. Belichick himself praised Jackson on EEI last week rather effusively, but a lot of people only hear or see what they want to and aren't going to give this guy the benefit until he starts playing like a #1.

Personally, I think we should allow Brady to work on his passing game. The only time we should pull him is if were way ahead anytime in the game. Also, I'd consider pulling him if the defense is getting to him and banging him around. He's one player we can't offord to loose.

It's a crazy idea, and I'm sure it rightfully hasn't and won't be considered by the team. But if someone said last year "I think Doug Flutie should dropkick the extra point", we'd be having the same discussion.
