Will the NFL "Fix" the Schedule?

The NFL has already announced that it will release the 2011 schedule in April, just as it has in past years. If one assumes the worst-case scenario, i.e., several weeks' worth of games may be missed due to the labor dispute, then it's quite possible that some teams will be advantaged by missing tough games during the early part of the season. By now, all self-respecting, semi-paranoid Patriots fans should already be asking themselves which are the toughest road games for the Jets in 2011. To save you a little time, here they are: @Patriots, @Ravens, @Eagles, @Dolphins (maybe). If 1.5 is the over/under for the number of these games that show up on weeks 1-4 of the Jets schedule, I'm taking the over.

If games are missed I will be so pissed. This would be one of the last things I would care about.

Not to mention that sort of thing could backfire if the strike didnt happen you would be setting the team up for an awful start.

My guess is this will be a shifting of division and conference games toward the latter half of the season.

If the schedule comes out and there are no inter conference games in December, I'd spike the worry meter.

If they're even considering this, the best method would be to get the non-divisional games out of the way early. Pats/Colts hasn't been scheduled before November since '04 I think, so that should be safe.

Really though, I think the bye week would be the biggest concern. Would much rather have a bye week in week 10 then week 4 if we start missing games. If we get to the point where some teams play 12 games, some 11 due to missing the bye week, that would also be unfortunate.

No. Those are the toughest road games on the Jets' schedule. By front-loading the Jets schedule with some of these games, they could wind up with an easy schedule for next year, courtesy of the Jets fans in the NFL offices.

While Goodell may consider that, the networks will be whispering loudly in his ear about what scenario they would prefer. The sports divisions of those networks have surely already been called to the carpet by their bosses as to why they agreed to the last TV deal with the NFL.

The networks have historically had a great deal of input in the NFL's schedule making process; I don't see why that will change this year.

I would myself think if say 4 games are missed, that the games canceled would be the 4 AFC vs NFC games and they would adjust the schedule to fix that.

They cannot make significant adjustments to the schedule at such late dates. Dates have to be planned out well in advance since many stadiums are used for other purposes. It's not like they can just wait until the lockout is over and throw a whole new schedule out there.

I bet that if actual regular season games are missed, they will expand the playoffs to compensate for any perceived unfairness (not to mention make a little extra $$).

It's probably a radical suggestion, but do you think they would ever consider just pushing the whole thing back by the amount of time missed?

I would love an NFL season that ran from, say, opening day on Sunday, October 2, 2011 and ran through Sunday, January 22, 2012.

Playoffs would start on 01/29/12 and end on 02/12/12, take a week off, and have the Super Bowl on the last Sunday in February.

You're not too far off your original schedule and we get an extra month of football at one of the deadest sports time of the year and it gives you an extra six weeks at the front end to concentrate on college football!

In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing them do this permanently. Football is a cold weather sport anyway.

I doubt they ever start in OCT. lockout or strikes aside.

But they very well could be heading toward the end of febuary if they ever go to an 18 game schedule. If they go 18 games it would be a good idea to give each team an extra bye week and thus the season could go an extra 3 weeks.

The general consensus if they go to 18 games is they will have the Super Bowl on Presidents' Day Weekend which, as I have noted before, sets us up for Total Armageddon in 2016 when the Super Bowl would be held on Valentine's Day.
