Rex Ryan: "Welker's benching at the start of the AFCDG was out of respect for me"

Memo to Rex: as difficult as this may be to fathom, it's not all about you.

If you want to read everything Ryan had to say today - he took full advantage of the opportunity and talked for 75 minutes to the media - here is a link to his 2,600 words of wisdom: Rex Ryan, Jets coach, talks about Bill Belichick, Wes Welker, AFC Championship game loss to Steelers - NYPOST.com

Personally I'm hesitant to click on the link and see what he had to say for two reasons. First, the more people read that stuff, the more the media loves that increase in readers, and as a result the more likely they (the media) will portray Ryan favorably.

Second, earlier today the writer of this article said "31 coaches showed up for the NFL media breakfast. Only exception: Belichick. Once again, Bill acts like the rules don't apply to him. ... I hear Belichick had a legit excuse for his no-show today. He was busy studying illicit videotape of opponents' defensive signals."

So I don't really want to give him the benefit of hits to his article, but I do want to make Ryan's full commentary available to those who might be interested. The link is there, I'll leave it up to each individual to decide whether or not they want to read it. If I find another link to everything Ryan said I'll replace it.

I believe it was out of professional respect for the coaching profession in the NFL, not necessarily Coach Ryan.

The thing is that there are few if any coaches with the lack of morale like Rex Ryan so in reality...its Ryan ahead of the other 31 coaches by a monster mile in terms of coaches that are laughable and made fun of.

He is a coach in the NFL and measured by his success to date is a very good
one. I don't particularly care for his personal life and demeanor but I am sure
that he isn't the only coach that rubs (pun intended) opposing fans the wrong
way. As far as morals and coaches, I would believe that you are way off base
assuming that he is alone in the "few if any" category. You must be new to
football if you believe that.

he's a blowhard, but his approach is so obvious to try and take media light off all his players, which i believe they appreciate.

it's worked pretty well up till now aside from not winning the superbowl, his team has been quite good in the playoffs

of course, they've got some problems possibly if there's a cap this year

Rexy is partially right. BB did not like Wes' veiled referencing of Mrs. Rexy with his repeated foot references. That's why Wes was benched. It was a benching that would have happened no matter the coach so in that sense Rexy is wrong. It wasn't about Rexy being personally respected by BB. It's all about the profession of NFL coaching being respected by BB.

While there may be coaches with lower moral than others,Rex stands out from the crowd because of his media activity and his 'loudness' compared to other coaches who may be similar but are much quieter about it.

It wasn't about Wrecks at all, it was about Welker violating a team directive. Wrecks is a narcissist.

I took a massive dump today...out of respect for Wrecks ,of course...

If you think that BB was just benching Welker based on a violation of team expectations, I think that you are seriously selling BB short.

Wether it was a statement as to the "coaching profession" or to "Rex" personnaly....(I believe it was personal based on BB's relationship with Rex's brother) I feel with a certainty that there was a measure of respect shown.

Don't let the Jester hate get in the way of BB showing a human side to his machinations.

Correct on all three points. I'm surprised many can't see how BB would be particularly irked at one of his players including another coach's wife in his PC. As light hearted (and funny) as it may have been intended, the Welker 'joke' involved a coach's wife and personal life. That has got to be off limits to players talking to the press (most especially during the season)......

Nonsense. The target of Welker's jibes had nothing to do with it and everything to do with BB's gag order on trash-talking other teams, especially before a playoff game.

I know we hate the Jests, and Rex is rather annoying, but people seem to ignore the obvious. BB does like, and respect the Ryan bros. I think its obvious Welker was benched for more than just breaking a gag order. Though I still dont understand why a 'benched' player was fielding kicks ;)

I agree. It was about a demonstrated lack of concentration on the task at hand, which was getting ready for and being focused on the next game. Everything and anything else is a distraction. You can't have players demonstrating publicly that they aren't exclusively focused on the next game. It sends the message to the rest of the team that it is OK to do this.

The subject matter was irrelevant.

Welker wouldn't have been benched if he hadn't mocked Ryan. So technically, the benching was out of DISrespect to Ryan.

No, it would've happened had he directed his silliness at a Green Beans player or anyone else in the enemy camp. It had nothing specifically to do with the fact it was Ryan.

I just had a GD snack...out of respect for Blabba Gutts of course

The bottom line is that BB did not put his team in the best position to win that day, a playoff game.....pretty dumb
