Been struggling over value when doing my mocks. What's the dropoff from Quinn to Smith to Reed...Watt to Jordan to Wilkerson, etc. Then I stumbled upon a name I had been ignoring.

Jabaal Sheard.

Sheard has prototypical size, is explosive off the snap, was super productive once Romeus went down, is a team leader, plays with non-stop determination and has a hell of a nasty streak. He can rush the passer and play the run. Coverage is a question, but he'd be unlikely to drop into coverage often.

God I hope Belichick thinks this guy can play OLB. I'd take him at 28.

I think he's a mid-2nd to early-3rd talent. A quick look at his combine stats(4.69 40 and 31" vert) lends me to believe that he is more quick than explosive and I'd rather target a player with explosion off the edge.

I believe it was self defense and he got a bit carried away. He apologized, and life went on. Not as big of a deal as it originally sounded. Besides, we took Meriweather despite the fact that he shot a man while in college, plus the head stomping incident.

Sheard is a pretty good player. He's tough, gritty, and aggressive on the field. I don't know if I see an elite athlete who could hold up with a lot of coverage responsibilities, but I think he could be okay with the occasional zone drop. He doesn't have the length we typically look for, but I'm not sure that matters if he's got the requisite skills. I would be okay with him from the mid-second onward.

...but was voted a team captain even after that, and was respected by teammates and coaches for his outstanding work ethic and relentless play.

This is a tough situation, a player who was always considered a top intangibles guy so everybody he'd ever played for/with called the "incident" shockingly out of character. But, it's obviously a very serious "incident." :confused2:

EDIT: I just remembered, FWIW Dave Wannstadt, after learning all the details of the situation, surprised everyone by choosing not to suspend Sheard for even a single game. That wasn't Wannstadt's MO as a college coach, so that's a bit of support for the idea that it was self-defense taken too far.

Maybe you should look at different stats. Sheard also recorded an outstanding 1.59 10-yard-split, more typical of a safety than a DE.

I just wish he'd played LB in a post-season game, or at least been able to do the shuttle, cone and positional drills at the combine. Or some detailed info on his pro day performance, maybe? Something? Doubtless the Patriots have plenty of ways to judge his prospects as a conversion project, but I have no clue. He spent most of his time at Pitt fighting double teams as a pass rusher.

Russ Lande

Jabaal Sheard went through defensive end and linebacker drills, showing the athletic ability to be highly productive at either position. He showed good explosiveness in his movements throughout the long workout. He has some growth potential to add some bulk to play end, too. He has been an under-the-radar prospect all fall but might surprise the masses with how high he is drafted April 28. He could be a late riser like Tyson Alualu, the No. 10-overall pick of the Jaguars in the '11 draft.

Jabaal Sheard had a pretty average Pro Day. He stood on his Combine numbers and looked mediocre in the drills.

At some point your own interviews, research, and personal contact with the kid have to weigh more than what the press puts out.

Meanwhile Jabaal Sheard also looked good in a variety of defensive line and linebacker drills. He's unlikely to slip past the middle of round two based on his combine time (4.67s) and performance today.

Sheard showed well at the combine, and after reviewing the tape of Sheard's performances against Rutgers and Miami, he's not far behind Reed. He was a tone-setter for the Panthers and showed toughness against Rutgers, recording two sacks and a forced fumble despite a left elbow injury that essentially made him a one-armed player.

Sheard has great size (6-2⅞, 264), impressive strength and short-area power, and like Reed, he brings it on every play. He has an above-average first step for his size, effective inside and outside swim moves and stays low to help generate the power to rock offensive tackles back with his bull rush.

Finally, Sheard is athletic enough to line up as a 3-4 outside linebacker and shows the ability to stack the edge against the run, shock and shed blockers and redirect to the ball. There are minor character concerns stemming from an off-campus fight during the summer of 2010, but all indications are that Sheard was coming to the aid of a teammate who was in trouble, and scouts I've talked to say he has interviewed well.

Overall, Sheard is locking down a spot in the middle of the second round

I have only seen this kid play once vs Miami but he dominated in that game. I think we are much more likely to take a flier on an OLB conversion project in the 2nd or 3rd then taking a guy in the first who we hope projects to OLB. Sheard has the ideal measureables we look for in an OLB and he had very good combine numbers with college production as well. There are only two questions about him: can he play in space/standing up and can he drop into coverage occasionally? I really like this kid I just didn't consider him because of the arrest. However, the more details that has come out about this incident, the better it sounds for Sheard. Here is some clips of Sheard:

I've come to ignore the arrest incident. There's enough good on this guy with the clubhouse leadership and his rescuing the old lady in the fire.

The scouting reports and video lead me to believe this guy is going to be an absolute beast, like a Suggs or a Woodley. I think that kind of mean streak is exactly what the Patriots defense is lacking.

The problem is that Lande wasn't actually at the Pitt Pro Day. He's catching sh!t now for blasting Jon Baldwin's workout without actually being there (captured nicely by Profootballtalk.com)

I think drafting Sheard in the first or even before 60 is a desperate reach by a HC/GM who typically doesn't do that. We don't need a pass rusher badly enough to draft 3rd/4th round talent at 28 or 33 just because he might be the best of what's left. I certainly don't think he approaches Cunningham from a talent standpoint.

The incident throwing the man through the center of the plate glass window is a HUGE positive when judging his skill set..........he displayed OUTSTANDING leverage and accuracy
I'm a huge Sheard fan and can envision a scenario where BB trades back at #28 or #33 into the middle of round #2 while gaining a 2012 pick and grabbing a sub package pass rusher

Read the SI article on players in trouble with the law. Pitt was the worst. I wouldn't take a recommendation from Wannstadt.

Reportedly was ordered by police to stop but refused before being struck by a billy club several times. Continued to fight with suspect before throwing him through a glass door of an art store. Sheard was eventually pepper sprayed, arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

BB wants his players to play through to the whistle -- but they must be smart and disciplined. Maybe he's learned a lesson...:confused2:

Do your homework: Jabaal Sheard has a lot going for him, but he is not even CLOSE to "prototypical size."

Willie McGinest was 6.5/270.

I'm not suggesting we need to hold out for that: only clarifying "prototypical".

Besides, we took Meriweather despite the fact that he shot a man while in college....

DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard: Pittsburgh (6-3, 264)Sheard’s the one prospect that has been quietly going under the radar in this very talented defensive line class. However, he’s a highly productive pass rusher who possesses a thick lower half, an intruding pass rush arsenal and plays with a great motor. At the NFL Combine be proved that he was a gifted athlete, running in the high 4.6 range and in my mind he not only displays the capabilities to play down as a DE in the 43, but also stand-up as a 34 OLB. And from scout’s I’ve talked with about his character concerns surrounding a fight back in July, they say it’s really not that big of an issue. He’s a guy who I would love to pick off the board early in round two and think he could end up maturing into one of the better pass rushers to come out of this year’s draft.

The more this process goes on the more I like this kid.
