Adrian Peterson Says NFL Players Work in 'Modern-Day Slavery' - NFL - NESN.com

Adrian Peterson said:
"It's modern-day slavery, you know?" Peterson told Yahoo. "People kind of laugh at that, but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money ... the owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money. I understand that. These are business-minded people. Of course, this is what they are going to want to do. I understand that. It's how they got to where they are now.

"But as players, we have to stand our ground and say, 'Hey, without us, there's no football.'"

Hey Adrian - I have news for you. Without the owners, you don't get paid a $7 figure salary.

Some people should just keep their mouths shut. Claiming his job is the equivalent of slavery??? Guy clearly doesn't know his frigging history.

Hey Adrian - Slaves didn't have $7 figure salaries, top notch medical facilities, top notch training facilities, and get to play a GAME..

Well, he does play for Minnesota. Canada's right over the border, the CFL is beckoning!

I would love to see the league play with scab players and get high ratings for a season.

Slaves? I thought they were "soldiers" in a "war"? I'm confused.

This is a thoughtless, ignorant, and highly disrespectful statement. If it came from a white player, there would be some serious ripple effects and he'd be forced to apologize - correctly so.

Did slaves have a choice to not be slaves? No.

Does Peterson have a choice not to be in the NFL? Yes.

Shut the hell up, Peterson.

anybody who didn't see this coming, not only from Peterson, but the rest of the NFL morons who "graduated" college with no more than a rudimentary kindergarten "**** and Jane" grasp of the English language is just being naive.

Hey Adrian, I'll take your job for a season so you can have a season off!

Hell, I'll do it for vet minium!

WOW......that is all.

Trade you any day Adrian.

Another "modern day" athlete without a clue.

Its stuff like this thats make its hard for me to back the players, get a friggin clue you dope

Ridiculous comment -- not just on its own but within the context of the rest of his statement.

That said, there sure seems to be a lot of animosity towards players in this thread. Why do you even watch the NFL if you hate the players as much as it sounds here?

That would be one more vote for the position the players are out of touch with the plight of the real working class.

Of course he takes issue.

Less anyone think this mentality exists only with players, this morning a wealthy industrialist outside of Buffalo (he's running for the US congress seat of Chris Lee, the guy who poses shirtless, flexes for transexuals) said that we could solve illegal immigration by busing blacks in from Buffalo to pick fruit in the fields.

I'm kind of like the kid in Sixth Sense right now: "I see rich people."

Fool! Everyone knows that blacks from Buffalo would overheat quickly picking fruit

In Adiran's defense, his Nike endorsement contract also requires him to make sneakers at $.07 an hour for 18 hours a day when he's not playing football.

His agent really should have read the fine print.

A poorly worded attempt to point out that NFL players are one of very few employees who don't get to change their employer at the drop of a hat.

Anyway, Grant's comment is nice but also doesn't take it far enough. There are more people in slavery now than at any time in human history.

Poor choice of words by Peterson because he should have known that one sentence would make headlines. I wonder what the ratio is of people right now that are aware Peterson made the slavery analogy but are unaware of his next sentence, "there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too."

He'd have better off with a different analogy and recommending people read William Rhoden's Forty Million Dollar Slaves based on the point it appears he was attempting to make.

The ironic thing is what he is accusing the NFL of doing, he is taking money from Nike where they actually have factories that commit actual slave labor. Educating for Justice reports that between 25-50% of Nike's factories in Asia force their workers to work seven days a week for less than the region's minimum wage.
