Felger mentioned something about this last night on NEST. Samuels and Nate Clements are the best two CBs on the FA market. That coupled with the expanded salary cap means someone will offer Samuels big money. I think something in the 5 year $5 million a year range is reasonable, but I bet he'll get more elsewhere.

overvaluation of CBs in general
many teams with plenty of cap room
dumb teams who spend money unwisely (Redskins)
expensive franchise #
good INT #s (highly valued - overvalued?)
Patriot's refusal to break the bank for non-pro bowlers

Absoultely correct. I would put the chances of Asante coming back at like 12%, I would be shocked if he is in a Pats uniform next year.

Can't enjoy the guy's three interception performance for even one week without a bunch of people saying he's gone. Oh well, the nature of a message board I guess. It's almost enough to go back to reading a newspaper, but not quite.

And upon further review, after reading a few of these threads, I think we lost that game against the Bears on Sunday, so we can't even enjoy what initially appeared to be a win.

So in 10 years, Brady and Belichick are probably gone, Kraft might have sold the team and it could be back to bleak days à la former great teams like the Browns and the Packers. He may run a bit hot and cold in coverage but he plays tough and is pretty strong against the run as a tackler, he hits hard for his size. Plus, the CB's would be gutted and essentially starting from scratch if he walks. I say he's a Pat next year unless he is franchised and traded.

Samuel is worth franchise money to you? Just going off of 2005 base salary figures, that's over 4 million for one year.

Yes, here's why- say he came to senses and decided to sign a reasonable contract with the Pats, say $13mil for 4yrs. Samuel would very likely get $4mil in bonuses minimum (any less up front and he would never sign anyway), and the minimum salary around $1.2mil for year one. The second year would also have some kind of bonus, say $2mil and the $1.3mil salary. That's almost $9mil in the first two years, probably more. Anyway which way you slice it, Samuel would average at least $4mil/yr if he re-upped with Pats under any similar contract scenario. Franchising him for around $4mil/yr for a year or two gets the Pats the player they want for what the average they would have paid him anyway, without any kind of pending cap damage should he be hurt or just bomb out.

In the meantime they can figure out how to replace him and won't be bound by a bonus structure.

In fact, he isn't quite as good. But, they may decide to pay him if he learns to defend as many passes as he intercepts. You can't coach instincts, and BB reluctantly admits Asante has them.

Franchise money for CBs is expensive, which may get in the way of franchising Asante. Meanwhile franchise money for TEs isn't so bad. I figure the franchise tag will be used on Graham.

Of course the offsetting logic is that the Pats are thin at CB while deep at TE, so Asante fits more of a need than Graham does.

as for Fanfrom1960, I am sorry that you cannot enjoy the present if you know it will one day come to an end. Of course, you're the only person here introducing that in the first place. As I previously stated and you previously ignored, this thread was a simple question-and-answer sans emotion and hand-wringing before you showed up. I now expect you to read this and post yet another tangentally relevant bit about enjoying the present with your head in the sand towards the future.

This year the franchise number for CBs was $7,226,000.
In 2005 it was $8,816,000.

IMO, that's way too low. That's about the same APY as Starks got from the Pats in 2005. Samuel is a better player than Starks and is much younger.

It really all depends on if Asante wants to stay here or go for the highest bidder. The Pats will probably offer decent money but there will be higher offers and probably closer to home(south)for him. IMO he's gone next year.
