Von Miller Interview, NFL Draft - DraftCountdown.com
It's really a great interview - really worth checking out.

Some quotes (I don't know how to do the fancy quote formatting):
Whatever they want me to play; I’ll play it. If they want me to play tight end, quarterback, or wherever they want me, I’ll play it.

I’m a very humble guy, so I don’t mind coming in and lowering my head and lowering my pride for the guys that’s been there working for years.

But the main reason for coming back was to be with my brothers and my teammates

I need to work on all areas of my game. I don’t think I’ve made it yet in any area of my game. I just want to keep on working, keep on improving and taking it day-by-day.

There are no moral victories in football. You can come close, but a loss is a loss and a win is a win. I have to think that losing is the worst thing about football.

The guy that I really try to emulate my game after is Derrick Thomas. I got a lot of game film on Derrick Thomas.

I’m just taking it day-by-day and not try to get too far ahead of myself. My formula for success is to take it day-by-day, try to maximize every day that I live and try to stack days.

I just want to be a great teammate. I want to win games. Whatever organization brings me in, I want to win and be the best teammate I can possibly be.

It’s not about money for me. I’ve been wanting to play football since I was a little kid. Just to have the opportunity to go out on Sundays and have the whole world watching, it’s priceless.

This guy sounds like a Patriot to me.
Plays for the love of the game.
History - watching Derrick Thomas.
Humble - wants to improve & win.

With rumors about the Pats willing to grab a smaller LB and the rookie pay scale. I would love to see us package guys (Merriweather?, Mankins) and picks to move up to grab him. I think we all trust BB to not overpay.

And for all the arguments about not being enough - Clay Matthews weighed 240 coming out, James Harrisson weighs 242 ish right now. Von can put on a few more lbs and round out at 250lb and at this point he's as big as Colvin and TBC.

sounds like a kid with the right mindset but inb4 those guys wouldn't be effective here/Miller is overrated!!!1

Matthews/Harrisson not being effective in our system is pure opinion.
Would they better than TBC?
How effective was TBC this season?

Would you say Miller looks like a guy who COULD eventually learn to set the edge? Is he: big, smart, willing to work, study enough to do this? I think the answer is yes.

Worse case scenario use him in coverage/pass rushing situations while he learns. But he could come in day 1 and contribute.

I hate the system. I'm not sold on Miller because all he seems to do is speed rush, but there's plenty of smaller pass rushers like him.

I hope everyone realizes that Von Miller is one of the 10 players who signed onto the lawsuit of the NFL.

Kind of amazing when you think about it. Some people are saying the old rules will apply if the judge ends the lockout. That means that Von Miller would hit the jackpot. On the other hand, the owners might hold it against him and drop his butt in the draft.

An opinion that seems prevalent around here, I don't agree with it but there is a camp that does.

Some of the older owners like Davis and Wilson might hold it against him. IMO, most of the newer owners are more "rationalist" business types who understand that SOMEbody has to sign on as the plaintiff in a lawsuit and the actual names don't really matter very much. These newer guy are probably also smart enough to know that if there was even an appearance of collusion to "blackball" Von Miller after this, they'd have anti-trust investigators rooting around in their underwear drawers in a New York minute.

Perhaps you've heard there's a lockout? And it'll be April till the judge even rules whether the lockout is legal. So the chances of trading existing players is almost none. Even if there were, Mankins is not signed to a contract and Merriweather might be in legal trouble - so both are untradeable.

That being said, 17+28 should get us up to #6 - which is where we'll have to go to get Miller. Count me in!

If his stock drops for it all the better.
It's all business after all.
Once that's done - the pads come on and it's time to win games.

IDK. I think Miller could be gone by #2 to Denver. It seems to me that they're equally thin at OLB and DE. They'll still have a pretty decent selection at 4-3 DE when they pick next at #36, but OLB, not so much.

I suppose he could go #2. He's probably a more valuable to a 34 team. He could definitely go 3 or 5. But I think that's just too high to jump.

Since Harrison is an undrafted free agent who was waived more than once before making the team, it's hard to argue about passing him by. Matthews made a huge impact for Green Bay in their game against NE? I missed that because it seemed like he was hiding under Vollmer or a TE a lot.

Would they be better than TBC? In what way? A seventh round pick who has made an 8 year career in the Not For Long and will be competing for a 9th if the NFL/NFLPA ever get their collective heads out of rectal-cranial inversion? Perhaps there's more talent, better is debatable until they get on the field and prove something.

TBC took 60% of OLB snaps most games last year from Reiss' reporting, I can't help but think people underestimate his actual contribution while dwelling on one or two negative plays.

As to your defense of Miller - I'm in agreement. I see him as a prospect who has the potential to fill the speed rusher role which made Colvin so dangerous drew attention which freed up others along the front. I also believe Miller can play effectively at 250-255 against the run and in coverage, but that his learning curve will draw criticism from the instant gratification crowd.

Are people still talking about trading two 1sts to get Miller? This guy could be the next Vernon Gholston for all we know. Get a solid stud at DE with one 1st and another starter at OL with the other 1st. Two starters or one? Grab a Houston or Reed in the 2nd and call it a day.

Your right. Opinion is exactly what it is. I almost want to laugh when I hear the comparisons to Gary Guyton and Chciken Legs Crable. People wake up! Miller is exactly the player BB has been trying to get to solve his pass rush issues for years now. Guyton is a contributor with some speed. Crable just couldn't stay on the field. But you bet he held out hope that Crable would be that guy. In most's opinion, a little longer than anyway would of preferred.

I don't know if I see them moving up to get him unless he falls to around 8 or 9. But if there is a significant drop with someone like Miller,Quinn,Bowers,Fairley etc, you bet they would at least consider it. They wouldn't be a good drafting team without evaluating all their options. Espcially since it was themselves that put their organization in the position to move up or back in the first place.

I'm not about to trade two 1sts to get anybody, but there is a big, big difference between Miller and Gholston, and it's game tape. I was a Gholston supporter, and he seemed to play well in the handful of OSU games that I saw, but there was a large contingent of scouts (professional and this board) who said that the game-to-game production, especially against top competition was not there...that his motor ran cold when he had a tough matchup.

There might be some knocks vs. Miller, but production and effort are certainly not going to be among them.

To suggest that Matthews is not an impact player because Vollmer handled him isn't saying much. Vollmer handled top notch pass rushers on a regular basis. Just because this happened doesn't make CM less of an impact player in my eyes. If CM played like he did against Vollmer all season - he would be TBC aka JAG.

I'm not questioning TBC's carreer. Only his role as a guy who took 60% of the snaps and did not produce enough. It's not much dwelling on negative plays. No... Instead I'm dwelling on positive plays not had and one of the worst 3rd down defensive conversation rates in the league.

At the end of day it comes down, who would rather on the filed? My thought is Matthews (among others) > TBC. But given this impossibility, I'd take Miller in a second. Given the right trade-onomics of course.

I thought it was the exact opposite? Everyone would talk about how Gholston was the only player to get a sack versus Jake Long.

I'd take Miller in the second in a heart beat, too bad I don't expect him to fall out of the Top 15.

OK, let's actually look at the full scenario if you trade up for Von Miller.

Everybody seems to agree that it will take both first-round picks (at the minimum). Most folks here also seem to agree that a starting-caliber DE is a must in this draft. Realistically, that will require a pick in the early/mid 20's. Let's say you trade up with a package like this...

#33 & #60 for #24 & #88

...and nab Muhammad Wilkerson.

Now you have #74, #88 & #92 remaining for day 2. Interior OL is a must. Board favorites Watkins, Ijalana and Boling are likely gone. Let's say you double up on guys who are ready and versatile, if somewhat low-ceilinged: James Carpenter (OG/RT) at #74, John Moffitt (OG/C) at #88. #92 is pretty wide open; let's take a shot at Greg Romeus.

So starting with 2 picks in each of the first 3 rounds, you come away with:

Von Miller
Muhammad Wilkerson
James Carpenter
John Moffitt
Greg Romeus
(no future picks acquired; not much opportunity for it in this scenario)

Happy?

Yes, I would be, 2 starters with a potential pro-bowler in Miller.
Starting caliber DE.
Plus hard working OL talent for Dante + high ceiling gamble in Romeus.
Now, can you call Bill and make it happen?
