Late Round QBs

While I just like many other people like Brian Hoyer, he still needs a little competition. While it's pretty far down the road, you have to start thinking about the future at quarterback as well, whether it's this year or next year. Brady will be 34 years old this year and has already stated that he doesn't wanna play til he's 37, 38, 39 years old. I think at 36 he may be leaning towards retirement which isn't that far down the road. The Patriots seem to find quarterback steals in the later rounds and here's some QBs who could be targets for them.

1. Greg McElroy, QB Alabama: Scored the highest on the wonderlic (if that means anything) but he seems like a smart QB who doesn't make many mistakes.

2. Ricky Stanzi, QB Iowa: Stanzi showed great leadership in college and has both good arm strength and accuracy. He's a solid prospect.

3. Tyrod Taylor, QB Virginia Tech: I'm sure the board will be divided on this one but think about it, he's a great gamble as a project.

Stanzi is my official late round QB binkie, I see him as a fine backup with the potential to be an heir, he's even trained with TFB's QB mentor, and he's done some nice stuff in Iowa.

I like McElroy, certainly wouldnt be disappointed to see him scooped up by BB, but I only see him as a backup.

Dalton is another one that could potentially be an heir, technically he has what one would be looking for, but he doesnt inspire any kind of emotion in me.

Love McElroy if he's available in the 5th or later. That said, the QB they add this season won't be Brady's replacement. He will be Hoyer's replacement. Brady hasn't said he doesn't want to play until 37, 38, or 39 unless you are totally misinterpreting his consistently articulated desire to play into his 40's...which is what he is on record saying.

He has said that but so what? He might have a change of heart or he might have a career ending injury. There's also the matter of keeping Hoyer around, he looks very competant as a backup and will likely want a crack at the starting job somewhere, even if Brady plays for several more years we still need a QB or 2 backing him up.

I'm sure it isn't the first, but it's first I've SEEN that corroborates what I've been saying ALL ALONG: General Tom Brady is, as you say, ON RECORD as saying he wants to play out the DECADE...And an out of shape degenerate like FAVRE just played into his 40's...so why in the name of GOD are so many saying we need to fall all over ourselves to waste an early round pick on his alleged replacement???

Other'n that, I have no strong feelings on the subject.

Let's get Chad Pennington 2.0 ~ Greg McElroy ~ and keep pulling in cerebral signal callers like him to augment our depth...and to eventually be traded for FAR more than we spent!!

Eventually, one of them WILL suddenly have to step in...but we need not get ahead of ourselves.

I don't know why Tyrod Taylor isn't getting any love here. He's definately a project but why not develop him as maybe Brady's eventual successor. You guys are wrong about Hoyer, he's a solid backup, they don't need an upgrade there BUT I don't see him as being a future starter. Tyrod Taylor has much more upside than McElroy, he's not any better than Hoyer, it would be a waste of a pick.

Agreed. But I've seen his name a LOT more than I'd like. I think some team is going to reach for him and he won't be a late-round option. BB will pick Saban's mind about McElroy if he hasn't already and if he's got faith in the kid, I could see us taking him earlier than the 5th if we have to.

TJ Yates is the guy I'd like to see New England take if they do take somebody. He just has the right attitude for the game, he is a solid player and is the type who will improve greatly if given time to.

FWIW, Taylor reportedly had a 15 on his Wonderlic. Granted, Hoyer was only in the mid-20s, so it's not like they set a high cutoff (and supposedly Kevin O'Connell had a high Wonderlic), but that's gotta be at least a bit concerning.

I consider Tyrod Taylor to be a VERY exciting prospect, but he's RAW as ALL get out.

I'd be willing to spend a 6th Rounder on him, and then develop him for a year or two.

He's got tremendous potential...

McElroy is one big pile of "meh." I don't think he has anything that Hoyer doesn't. If the Patriots feel they can gain something from drafting him, go for it. But they've been running with two QBs for awhile now. Plus, when did McElroy ever really face adversity and win Alabama a game? I've always seen him as the, "don't make mistakes because you're surrounded by a zillion future first round picks" guy.

McElroy is no Dane Locker for sure, but we don't need him to be spectacular, we need him to be a competent back-up, which is why you draft him, if he happens to be the next TFB then great, but that's just icing on the cake.

Was Hoyer "meh" when he was drafted?

Brady could get hurt or decide to retire, Hoyer could get hurt or decide he wants to be a starter somewhere. As Patchick said, QBs take a long time to develop and they EXTREMELY valuable, if BB feels McElroy could be solid it's probably a good call.
