The NFLPA has taken the idea of an 18 game season off the board, apparently they will not discuss this anymore....likely a dead issue that never should have been started to begin with.

If there is an agreement to save the 2011 season,it won't be including the players agreeing to 18 games

Good news to fans of good teams and bad news to fans of mediocre teams

Good news.

Not spoken to anyone who wants 18 games.

Happy to hear it......I'd rather have 18 games than 0 though.

Um, the Players Association were not the proponents in the first place. It was the NFL owners that wanted this.

And the NFLPA said no.....so we're happy.

I don't care for an 18 game season either, but the 18 games meant more shared revenue. I don't know now how the NFLPA can expect to share in a greater amount of revenue without greater revenue coming in?

Give them the better health benefits for retired players, but thats about it. The rookie wage scale benefts TEAMS not owners and vetern players.

I do.

And I want the expanded rosters that it would create. I hate the Playoffs coming around, and previously good teams playing with glaring holes due to injuries and inadequate substitutes in the most important games of the year.

The Pats Defensive line was a disaster by the Playoffs; and there was simply nobody else to play. Such might not have been the case with another 5-6 players on ther roster, including another adequate D-lineman substitute....

Hopefully this is good riddance to the 18 game season. Also get rid of the movement to "grow" the league by sending our teams overseas to play.

I too am in favor of an 18 game season

it means 2 less meaningless preseason games

increased roster & benefits would have to be included of course

Here's what they need

1 – Keep the current schedule, not only do the preseason games not stress the starters that much but they give the lesser players a chance to prove themselves and develop. Cutting those games out will put MORE stress on the starters and give the lower guys less of a chance to develop, that’s not good for the game.

2 – Add a few roster spots, this can be done within the current salary cap, teams will just have to figure out how to manage it, which shouldn’t be too hard considering that the additional spots would likely come from bottom rung players that would likely be on the practice squad anyway. With a rookie salary cap this should be more manageable.

3 – Rookie salary cap, restrict incoming rookies to a maximum salary of the vet minimum on a 2yr deal, with a signing bonus that cannot equal more than 3x the annual vet minimum. This will lessen the negative impact of draft busts, let teams apply those monies to proven players, and let the market figure out a player’s worth quicker than with the current set-up. A JaMarcus Russel would get paid less up front but a Devin McCourty would make more on the back end.

4 – Add an extra bye week, split them up, 1 in each half of the season. Players will be better rested and healed, this improves player safety which will likely result in better health and productivity long term, and it also makes for a better game, as all teams will have fresher legs making things more entertaining.

Bring back some form of the NFL Europe to develop the young players.

I am very glad to hear this. A solid majority of fans officially polled on this realize the attrition that 18 regular-season games would wreak on starting lineups. This was an ill-advised money-grab by Goodell and the owners that hopefully is dead forever. Now, they need to work on replacing two preseason games with free-to-the-public scrimmages (which I know won't happen).

There's no reaosn that can't do that anyway, my preference would be a minor/alternate league that would play in the Spring/Summer. They could play for cheap in College stadiums and it would give us hard-core football junkies a football fix.

So, who do you think is going to work on that one?

The players aren't asking for more.

Those 2 preseason games might be meaningless to YOU, but not to the players and especially the coaches trying to prepare for the season. If a 2/3 majority of players and coaches wanted an 18 game regular season, there would be one. Of course the owners want it, it makes them more money and they have to put out no extra effort.

I think the coaches and players would trade 2 preseason games for an additional bye week to practice and heal up during the regular season.

Best idea would be for the league to keep the 16 game schedule and drop preseason games to 2 weeks...one week for the rookies to be the main attraction and one week for the vets to play 2 or 3 quarters.

These are professonal athletes and 90% of vets don't need 3 or more preseason games to get the rust off.

I say step up week 1 of the regular season to the last week in august as well.....enough waiting time for all of us fans :)

Play in 2 more games so you get 1 game off, that's like paying someone $100 so they'll give you $50 in return.

There's no reason not to give them an extra Bye anyway.
