If the Patriots HAD to take a WR in this draft

Hankerson, Moore, Brown, a tall 'X' receiver who can be a deep threat and win jump balls, something we need because outside the numbers weve struggled

Tate needs to improve, Branch is slowing down and cant stay healthy and who knows what we have in Price

I hope its something we do

I don't think Tate has Brady's confidence yet and might not ever get it if he doesn't start running the correct option routes.

I don't think we will ever see the Branch of old due to the lingering effects of his knee injury. This is probably his last year in New England.

Price remains an almost complete unknown in my book, however he ran some good slant routes in the season finale.

If we can get a 2012 1st rounder and a decent 2011 to boot for the #33 pick, I would do it in a heartbeat, but I don't see anybody paying that unless a QB is there that they really like a ton.
So given all that if we can't move #33, then I take hankerson if available. He had a monster year for Miami playing with a D string QB and while being targeted by opposing defenses. He has more speed than I thought and is good at finding holes in zones.

Randall Cobb if he is there in the 3rd.

I don't get the subject of the thread - I think we WILL take a WR in the first 3 rounds.

Welker and Brach are in the last years of their deals. After them we have the great group of Tate, Price, Edelman. We need to draft a Hankerson, Smith, Little, Cobb, whoever, and give him a year in the system before needing him to compete for time legitimately.

Who do I like ? All those mentioned above. I also wouldn't be stunned if we traded up from 17 to 12 or so to get Jones if he's there. I don't expect it but . . .

Slightly off topic - but should we consider a move in FA or a trade to snag a No.1 receiver?

There are a few top notch players who are, may be available if the price is right.

I'm hopeful Brady gets Tate, Price, and Edelbinky out to his park to work with him this Spring when he and Welker get together for their frolics. I'd also like to see him include Slater and Hoyer ... heck, all his receivers at TE, WR, or RB should be there, Crompton too. Party in the park together for a week or better in LA each month and get inside each other's heads.

Agreed, not much reason to dislike Jonesie.

The only thing I don't like is he still drops the ball a little. Other than that he's the whole package - athleticism, work ethic, blocking, toughness. I strongly doubt we take a first round WR but this is an unusual year with so many picks that we could treat ourselves to the right guy by trading up and still have plenty of picks to fill needs. After a tradeup of, say, 1a and 3a we would still have 1b,2a,2b,3c. Of course we're just as likely to trade down and move some extra picks into 2012.

But Jones is one I'd think about if we traded up.

we have too many of the same size receivers

Leonard Hankerson at pick 33. He has playmaking ability the Patriots need is that bigger receiver with vertical threat. He, unlike Tate, will be able to make an imapct right away for the Patriots and not have to develop. Cobb is another guy under 6'0" and they already have a couple of players similar to what he does (Welker,Tate,Woodhead,Hernandez). Doss is not nearly as talented as Hankerson is. Hankerson was talked about as a first round pick, Doss has been mentioned as anything more than a second or third round pick. Plus Doss doesn't have the playmaking ability that Hankerson has.

Torrey Smith would top my list, i'd use the #33 on him if they go with the pick, however I think that this is the most likely pick to be traded.

In my current mock I have the Pats taking Hankerson at #33 because I do not think anybody will pay the king's ransom BB is going to ask for that pick.

I find it encouraging that BB was at the Miami pro day and while everyone instantly thinks Bailey, I think Harris And Hankerson were the reasons he was there.

It will be interesting to see which Miami players get an invite to Foxboro. Hope they are studied up and can break down film.

That's the thing, though: BB doesn't make the perfect the enemy of the good enough.

Voltaire, mon frere! And much to the point, I think. There are some execs who would determine a theoretical value to a pick like #33 and and not take anything below that because it's not a "good deal" or "full value." Belichick, though, has proven himself a pragmatist in regards the trade value chart. He'll take any offer as long as:

1. It's the best he can get
2. It's worth more TO HIM than exercising the pick he holds.
