Kiper: Brooks Reed will be a first-round pick
ESPN's Mel Kiper insisted on a media conference call Wednesday that he believes Arizona DE/OLB Brooks Reed will be a first-round pick."I have Brooks Reed of Arizona going in the late first," Kiper said. "You would have thought second. But I’ll say late first." Reed's stock is soaring after an outstanding ten-yard split at the Combine. We'd guess he'll go in the mid to late 20s on April 28, but it isn't out of the question for New England to fall in love with the Clay Matthews clone and pick him 17th. Mar 9, 2:48 PM

The constant Clay Matthews comparisons are a little silly, IMO -- nobody would say that if it weren't for their hair. Reed is a lot heftier than Matthews was in college, and more powerful, and more accomplished. Matthews, meanwhile, was a much more explosive athlete.

But...the Patriots, Jets, Steelers & Packers all pick #28-32, and Reed we likely the clear choice as the best 3-4 OLB left on the board. So I'm not counting on Reed lasting to #33 either. :(

I also think that Reed is more explosive than Matthews. Matthews is very fast, but he needs a head of steam to get there. He doesn't hit his gear until he's about five steps in which explains the loops they frequently use him in. I like Reed much better as a Patriots fit.

IMHO, his college career doesn't justfy a high second round pick.

Oh man, I hope not. Reed and Watt are my main binkies. I saw Reed as a mid-round sleeper last fall. Since then I've seen his stock rise to late 2nd. Now Kiper says late 1st. I just don't see it. Especially not with the depth at OLB this class.

I like Reed. I like him a lot. But I think a 1st would be too much for BB. Personally I see him as closer to Cameron Wake than Clay Matthews. But he does have holes in his game. His pass rush moves need lots of refinement. Ditto his stack and shed technique. But BB and co. are the perfect ones to teach those refinements. :)

I agree completely. I think this is a case of draftniks putting too much weight on the workout and not enough on the tape.

I believe he has him going to GB as of yesterday..

I don't know if a lot of you guys listed to the podcasts on Patriots.com about the draft but they are very interesting and entertaining because they cover a lot of topics and a lot of players. One guy on their podcast swears we won't take Reed because he played in an easy scheme in college and he doesn't have a lot of football IQ. He even hired someone to teach him about NFL schemes. They also say hes only good at running around the tackle and he doesnt do a good job setting the edge and once OTs get their hands on him he can be run on. Hes also only good at running forward and not dropping into coverage and moving laterally. They also interviewed him at the combine and they said he seems dumb as a rock.

I just thought I would pass this nugget of info along. I don't think hes worth a first either and even at 33 Id say hes a reach talent wise. I would much rather trade 17 and 60 a pick in the 10-12 range and draft Quinn and then take Wilkerson at 28 and than trade 33 back into the second so we can take a G and OT in the second.

gholston is still drying off from all the drool that kiper left all over him.......

automatic red flag

I can't believe you dumped on Reed then advocated moving up for Quinn all in the same post. Contradiction much? Quinn has his own red flags and questionmarks which include A) his ability to hold up against the run and B) having to take off nearly a year of football due to being suspended on disciplinary grounds.

Although I agree that Reed appears to be a 2nd round talent for now (as is Houston), player draft stocks change constantly. At this time before the draft, Mayo was also considered a 2nd round prospect but his stock rose drastically, pushing him up into the 1st round. That's where the Pats ended up taking him. I don't think we regret making that selection.

I think Quinn's "red flags" are BS. I heard on the patriots.com podcasts that he was great during the interviews and that during the media interview he was hammered with questions and he handled them excellently. He said he made a mistake and he said he feels really bad about it. He accepted $5,000 worth of jewelry. He knows he broke the rules and he acknowledged it. I don't know what else the kid can say.

Mayock has said Quinn is as good a pass rusher as hes ever seen entering the draft. We need someone who can make an impact at getting to the QB and hes the best available prospect. If hes available at 10-12 I don't see the big deal with trading up a few spots.

Kiper is way over rated....moving a player up the board on his eval is just plain dumb....

Not sure I like moving up that far to grab someone....letting the talent drop to BB or moving up a few is ok...but don't like giving up too much for a player that hasn't played a down in the NFL.....Pats are positioned to grab 3 or 4 solid players as it is......If BB feels that strongly about a highly rated player, maybe he will pull the trigger, but I wouldn't count on it...

There's always that second or third rounder that turns into a real find, and getting a young RB to complement BJGE would be nice...

If interviews were infallible indications of actual football ability, Tim Tebow would be owning the NFL right now. Guess what, he's not. I don't care if a player talks a good game, show it to me on film and most importantly on the field.

And please demonstrate this link where Mayock says that Quinn is the next coming of LT or in your words 'the best pass rusher he's ever seen in the draft'. I hope you're not relying solely on Mayock for this evaluation. Has Mayock commented on Quinn's ability to convert to a 3-4 defense? Because to get that high up in the draft, I just don't see the Pats giving up multiple picks for the privilege to take that gamble.

PS Accepting 'bribes' of $5k worth of jewelry to choose a school to play at doesn't throw up a big red flag for you? OK.

anybody else think Ryan Kerrigan is a sleeper at 28

No. He's a sam in the 34. The Patriots already have a player more athletic than Kerrigan who has a similar profile playing there in Cunningham. Patriots need that Jack/Joker/whatever they call it. Burst, burst, burst.

Kerrigan reminds me of vrabel a lot. Vrabel was said to lack that speed and burst coming from the steelers to the Patriots and Vrabel was arguably the best 3-4 outside linebacker the pats have had.

Game's changed, man, and Vrabes was the Sam. He was very savvy anticipating the snap count and was outstanding with his handwork. Vrabel won with technique and smarts, both of which are nearly impossible to accurately project from college.

True, and Matthews' college career didn't justify a low 3rd. Life is weird with pass rushers. :confused2:

You know, I keep reading about all the depth at OLB but I just don't see it. Who looks so tempting outside of the obvious 1st rounders?

Anybody who worries that Reed jut runs around the tackle, doesn't set the edge and can only move forward has got to be super-low on Justin Houston. Houston has a much more serious case of all of those diseases. Sam Acho is a nice player but not an explosive pass rusher. Etc.

I don't really get what you have against Quinn, got to agree with Welker. Is it just because of the jewelry? If you don't think that a ton of players have gotten more than $5k worth of jewelry from agents you are being naive.

Every player in this draft has a risk associated with them, that is why no one knows whats going to happen at the top of the draft, there is no consensus right now. It's not Quinn's fault that North Carolina played a 4-3 and not a 3-4, he excelled in the system he was asked to play in, and almost every 3-4 OLB in the NFL played DE in a 4-3 in college.

We are loaded with picks and we need to add a few impact players, this is the year to target the guy who will best help our pass rush and go after him, I think Quinn is that guy.

Did you happen to see Quinn at the combine workout. Wearing a giant diamond stud earring during the field session. For a guy that accepts illegal jewelry gifts, you would think he would have a more modest approach. Even the TV "experts" were commenting on his decision to go all blingy. Seems this guy is into all the spoils that go with being a high profile athlete. Do you really think this Quinn is a BB kind of player
