3 yrs, 20 million total. 7.5 million gaurenteed.

Thats is what Chad Clifton got last year from the Packers. Both are at similar parts of their careers. When Clifton signed his deal, he was a 10 year vet. Same with Light. Cliftons a year older when their deals would be signed, Clifton turned 34 in June of '10, Light will turn 33 in June of '11. Both left tackles. Clifton has been to 2 probowls, Light 3 probowls with 1 all pro season.

With Light being the Pats player rep I dont see him taking a home town discount and this will be his last chance at a big payday. I think he will start with what Clifton got last year, he may even ask for more.

I say "yes" because that is what Clifton got, and with Neal retiring, and Mankins probably heading out of town (or at least headed for more shenanigans), Kazur maybe headed out of town, we need some stability on the line, and Brady clearly trusts Matt Light. He's been a good player for 10 years for us, so he deserves a market deal.

I would have to delay an answer until I see what the team does on draftday.....we take a LT early and it would be a different opinion.

Close to 7 mil a year for Matt Light? If we make that deal I'll be pissed off. I'd retain him for 4 mil a year, maybe.

Hometown discount or he's gone

Have average salaries for left tackles declined since he last worked his contract? All sides of the equation need to be looked at.

In your opinion, what's a fair number in today's market?

Who knows what the market is. Is the cap going down to 115, will it stay at the 123 or if the owners get everything the want and it becomes a 15% reduction in salaries and the new cap is 108. Saying how much he is worth is relative to the cap space we have. I see the cap going down to about 115 and in that scenario I see light getting 2 years and 12 mill. with 1/2 up front.

That's a bit steep.

So, let us say we have a signed agreement in the next week.

I agree that if the salary cap is reduced to $115M, that free agents will get less than one might have previously projected. The difference between a $125M cap (the more likely cap I think) and a $115M cap is $320M a year. Almost all of this money would come out of the pockets of the free agents.

So, obviously, if the cap is only $115M, then Light is unlikely to receive the contract stated in the OP.

The rookie cap would be in place in either scenario.

I think a lot of people question where Light will be in Year 3 at the very least. Let's keep in mind that Light's had a difficult time with speedrushers in his prime - and I don't expect him to improve at this age.

So let's look at your deal as a two year offer with an year 3 option by the team. That's roughly $16 million over 2 years or $8 mil a season.

I'd say that's just a bit steep for Light. I could see what amounts to a 2 year $12 million deal with a third year tacked on, $6 mil guaranteed.

But when an LTs skills go, they go quick. That's no insult to Matt Light - Remember Bruce Armstrong?

with 4 picks in the first 2 rounds I would offer 3 years $15 million with 1/2 of that guaranteed. If we had the normal 2 picks in the first 2 rounds then I'd say Light could almost command the 7 million/year.

I don't care about the market or what's "fair". Each team decides their own market. Why am I bound by what the Redskins pay players? I would love to bargain with some of the people here, by the way. They're so concerned about what's fair to me, they'd probably offer more than I was going to ask.

The price would be what's needed to keep him here, or to pay an equally good alternative (factoring in upside, he's on the downside. You have to go young sometime).

Apparently, we're going to give an almost $3,000 dollar a year raise to someone who happily signed for the lower amount, apparently ignoring all those teams that wanted to pay him more.

For the prime years? sorry, they're in the rear view mirror. i happen to think his replacement is already on the team and we can look for a less expensive right tackle.

Why would you offer more than you need to in a negotiation?

lol. I've got $100 in my pocket, so i guess that makes that hamburger worth $90.

As long as you know that your arguments are worthless in the business world, more power to you. Each team does not decide its own market, since that's not what the "market" is. The team may pay more, less or precisely the same as the current market value, but that's not the same thing.

While that perception is widely held it is not consistent with the facts.

I think his point is that each team makes its own decision what to pay a player, and it shouldn't be influenced by what someone else is willing to pay them. Good in theory, but it reality, you have to compete with those other teams for free agents.

It absolutely is. Bill Belichick decides what each player is worth to our team and if it's going to cost a lot more, he gets a replacement. Now, if I'm an agent, I don't want to negotiate with Belichick, I'd much rather negotiate with Patfans posters who have decided to give me LT in their prime money despite the fact I've settled for less and I might not even last a three year contract.

Why do you think we got Light in his prime for so much less, because he doesn't like money?

But you decide which free agents you go all out for and which you'll have to pass on if their demands are too high and inflexible. No surprise we reupped Seymour and Wilfork in their prime for big bucks. Of course we would have been outbid there and DL are what make our defense tick. They made a calculate risk on oft injured Seymours later years, getting a pick and saving a big contract. Maybe the erred, but i doubt it. we'll see. Same with Boddin.

I went to Miguels page and saw Light's yearly salary. Who are we bidding against? BB doesn't believe in golden parachutes.
