Like I've been RANTING for last couple of years about LOCKIN UP Julius Peppers via trade/FA WAS A MUST NEED in Pass Rush dept Pats desperately needed. BB had a chance to get him. Knowing what Peppers wanted market $ wise i'm sure BB could have worked out something like Pepper's agent included in his contract. There were talks about JP comin to NE and BB was very much interested. Knowing upcoming contracts of our own players It just INFURIATES ME that something could have been worked out providing this article is legit.

CHICAGO -- The Bears have restructured Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers' contract to create more salary-cap room for next season.
A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the move Thursday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced it.

ESPN Chicago.com was the first to report the restructure.

Peppers signed a six-year deal worth potentially $91.5 million a year ago after leaving the Carolina Panthers in free agency and was due a $10.5 million roster bonus for next season. Instead, the Bears exercised their right to convert that money into a signing bonus and prorate it over the remaining years of his contract, which runs through the 2015 season.

That saves roughly $8 million in cap space for next season, giving the Bears more room to bring in free agents and retain their own.

I believe it also gave JP 10 million dollars upfront now. If so that was a win-win for both Bears & JP.
In case of a shut down JP you can say got his lock out $ for season.

Um, do you realize that what the Peppers' agent worked-out works to Peppers' huge benefit? Especially now? They converted money owed next year into money they paid him THIS year, and that only benefits the Bears because it means next year's salary is less because they paid it to him this year, a year in which there may not even be football. Furthermore, by restructuring his deal, it means there will be a lot more pressure to the Bears salary cap on the backend because now the average bonus hit against the cap is larger. This makes it likelier that the Bears will cut Peppers before his contract is over.

15+ Mil/Yr for one person. They better win a lot of SB's to justify that money.
Will he ever see all of that? Maybe, maybe not. They might be better served
getting a real QB for that money instead of JP.

You mean that the Bears made a move that everyone knew was coming the day the Bears signed Pepers and you think it is news. Nothing about the Peppers deal has changed. This is a typical occurance with big money free agents. They get big option or roster bonuses in years two, three, etc. and teams convert them into signing bonuses when they exercise these bonuses.

Nothing has changed. Peppers' contract is no more cap friendly than it was when he signed the deal since this was a bookkeeping move that everyone knew was most likley going to happen the day he signed the contract.

Fact of the matter is that Peppers is still the second highest paid d-lineman in the league behind Seymour. He has never played the OLB position in the 3-4 and paying him that much is a risk that he doesn't make the transistion. I was all for signing the guy until I saw the money.

I still don't see why people get so excited about a player who has the title of DE in a 4-3 defense when proposed as an addition to a 3-4 defense. 3-4 DEs tend not to be sack machines, and nobody really knows what happens if Peppers has to line up a couple yards off the line. Maybe the hope is the Pats toss their defense and shift to a 4-3 to get Peppers a few sacks.

Maybe the reluctance to overpay him has something to do with the sackmeister playing inconsistently in general and having a grand total of 1 sack against the Pats in 4 games over his career.

He is a good player, but almost no player, aside from a hof QB, is worth that much money per year imo.

I got to agree with the OP here. I think some people on this site can get too caught up with the "he doesn't fit our scheme, he couldn't play OLB in a 3-4 talk." Fact is we played in our sub packages more than our base defense this past year, and it is pretty obvious that our 3rd down defense was atrocious and that we needed someone who could put pressure on the QB.

You can't say that Peppers would not have improved our 3rd down defense greatly, and on a team that was so close, with so few holes he could have been the difference in the playoffs. Obviously this option was in the past, but we need to address this position in the draft this year. I don't care if the guy we draft can't set the edge as long as he can get after the QB in passing sitautions. It is a huge need.

The OP's 50th post ranting on the same tired old argument would be stronger had Da Bayiz say won even the NFCCG. They didn't.

And ANYONE who actually reads salary cap related posts here could see this standard cap move coming. It simply requires that the owner has some up front straight cash homey available now to alleviate future cap allocations. Pats etc. do this often, e.g. Brady several times. Other breaking news, the sun will set in the West this evening.

I didn't realize Chicago won the Superbowl this season.

Yeah, guys like you never care about setting the edge until we can't...

And guys like the OP would be better served to do a lot less ranting and a lot more reading (about things like how the NFL cap and contracts work) so they would potentially remotely understand what they are attempting to rant about. The only difference between a roster bonus and a signing bonus is how you book keep it. Peppers roster bonus for 2011 became fully guaranteed for injury AND skill on February 10, 2011... It was likely also payable on that date as opposed to some of the other recent contract extensions that tied payment of future bonus money to the first week of the new league year (whenever that happened...). And if you have to pay something you might as well amortize it if you are anticipating a return to the cap as everyone is.

The Bears didn't amortize most of the $20M he saw in 2010 because of the uncapped year. But they still had to pay it... So that's over $31M for 2 years of Julius Peppers. And while he can rush the passer he can't play QB which continues to be their downfall...

Just as you can't say he would have improved the 3rd down defense at all - sub packages or not. He is an unproven commodity at the positions he would have filled who wanted to be paid more than any other player on the Pats. He is also wildly inconsistent, playing when he want to play. For a complex defense relying on players to execute their respective roles, that is a recipe for disaster. Maybe he would have helped, but that chance was not worth a $12+ million gamble.

And I do agree the Pats need help in the pass rush and hopefully will address that in the offseason and with Warren's return. I just don't buy into the Madden stats with the belief you can plug and play a player in a very different position and expect the same or similar results - and certainly don't believe the Pats should break the bank on that gamble. The Pats had Seymour and let him go knowing he was one of the best in the NFL at that position - why pay more than he wanted for Peppers?

$15 million a year for part time player is not a bargain whether he plays 30-40% of the plays or 50-60% of the plays.

Not saying it isn't important, it is cleary extremely important in our base defense. I guess my larger point would be that it seems like we are looking for the perfect fit (a guy who can set the edge in our base defense and rush the passer in sub) when there are not many of those guys out there. With the amount of picks we have this year I think we can afford to draft a pass rushing specialist high. That being said I think our top targets will be guys who can potentially do both (ie Quinn or Aldon Smith), but if both those guys are gone I don't think we should pass on a guy who can come in and play in sub this year (ie Houston or Kerrigan)

who cares about peppers......the first guy that came to mind was ted larsen.....he would have been good in Neal's place......would have been one less thing to worry about in this year's draft

This thread.....-1*

This continuing hysteria about the likes of Jason Taylor and Julius Peppers ~ and other assorted Madden Heroes ~ doesn't baffle me nearly as much as it amuses me.

I take a back seat to NO man in my frustration that Bill The Mad can't seem to to divine the necessity of a @#$%^ing PASS RUSH, considering that said Pass Rush ~ Back in the Day ~ had a LOT to do with the surfeit of Bling currently adorning his fingers...

But in a world burdened with the Salary Cap, it is nearly unfathomable that so many CLAMOR for us to GUT our Depth of Talent by downgrading about 10 important, critical, and VITAL positions or so...in order to lay an hideously bloated salary on an hideously bloated, aging Veteran, most of whose best days are clearly behind him.

But, hey...That's me. :snob:

This thread is a joke, right?

no..THIS is a (bad) joke...

a jacka$$ walks up to the bar..bartender says."hey pal,why the long face?...
