I just went to read a story about the Patriots on the Globe site and was asked to register?

Like anyone wants to read that rag enough to take the time to register?

Wouldn't you think in these days when newspapers are closing doors all the time, they would want to make their stories as easily accesible as possible?

Why put readers through the hassle of having to yet ANOTHER Internet account and password, etc., and have to log on just to read a story.

I have been a Herald guy for years anyway, but I did keep a connection to the Globe through their website.

Guess that's over now, too.

So long Globe. Doubt I'll miss ya!

most sites let you proxy through using Facebook accounts. couple clicks and you are logged in. if you want to be anonymous, create a junk FB account.

as you said, these guys are trying to survive. more user accounts justify them charging more for advertising thus revenue.

I agree completely. I have no idea what they are thinking. The more gates you put up for your users, the less likely they are to stay.

If they think I am going to register and take the time to sign in to read what Bedard/Mazz, etc. has to say when I go to ESPN Boston and read what Reiss thinks without the hassle, they are insane.

I signed up years ago...and I am alive to tell the story. And that black helicopter finally stopped hovering over my house. The only downfall to registering is that Shank lurks on the edge of my property wearing a turtleneck.

That's only part 1, the Globe said that they intend to charge for Globe online content by the end of 2011.

I suspect that your cookies got kicked and that's why you had to register. Ever register before and forgot about it? That happens. Then the cookie changes/gets lost, and people forget they were signed up all along. nothing changed at the Globe. Or, if you're doing "private browsing" (ahem) and then click on the Globe, it won't register your cookies anyway.

What's the big deal really? I find Chad Finn worth it and a few others.

Laziness is at an all-time high

Welcome to the digital world!

It took 30 seconds to register. Less time than it did for you to post about this.

Hey, i'm with you on this one, stopped going to boston.com because of the required registration. Maybe it's silly, maybe it's petty, but I won't do it. Don't care.

Yeah, I'd much rather read John Tomase and Ron Borges, rather than Greg Bedard when it comes to Pats/NFL...wow...

Ha Ha. F-in Borg. You always know how to put a thread in perspective.:p

Everybody, local papers around the country are in terrible financial trouble. Some have already shut down. And online ad rates continue to fall, making complex, archived news websites hard to support.

As much as we like to whine about the sports section, our local papers perform critical community functions. We'd be in deep trouble without them. Cities that have lost their daily papers are experiencing painful effects, like political incumbents getting reelected in record numbers because nobody has a clue about the races and challengers.

Why are you so offended to be asked to register for your paper's website?
