As the Combine is in full-gear, for each position that the Pats are in need, which prospects "Fit" as a Patriot?

2011 NFL Combine Live

Anyone interested, the RBs are running 40s soon.

The eye opener so far is Julio Jones. Sub 4.4 forty, best vertical, best longjump.

Will Pats pick the "best player available" or will they pick what they need?

If they keep #17, and MarkIngram or JulioJones is there @ 17, will they pull
the trigger?

My hope is:

Keep #17, trade #28 or #33.

Select:

Cameron Jordan
Gabe Carimi

#60 - Stefan Wisniewski

I am butt ignorant about college players but enjoy reading the posts of those well informed. May I ask that you put a position after the prospect's name so those like me have a better idea of where you're coming from?

With the draft before free agency I'd say we draft more for need than BPA than ever before....but still trade up and down to massage the value out of the drafting positions. I dont remember so many holes going into a draft ever.....T,G, RB, DE, OLB....we could use 5 STARTERS and we know thats totally unrealistic. If we have a wink wink deal with Light you will likely see us draft a interior OL first. RB is a position of value, BB paid alot of money to sign Fred Taylor who never did much. Ingram is in the mix in the first round. There are plenty of DEs and OLBs this year but not all fit our scheme. Look for leaders/captains who dont work out and dont talk to the media. If you go to nfldraftscout.com and look at the players we drafted in the past.....nearly every one had "missing statistics" in their workout measurables. Then go to the combine and see who either isnt working out or isnt doing something...

Oh please NO; please Patriots no RB in the first or second round; you cannot be trusted.

When was the last time the Patriots drafted an impact RB? Curtis Martin? The tried to draft Monatrio Hardesty last year.

Besides RB is not as valuable as it used to be nor seemingly is the quality there anymore. The NFL has evolved and the Patriots have done OK with average RBs. BJGE seems more than adequate and he does not fumble.

Another serviceable RB can be picked up later in the draft. The first two or three picks should address the harder positions to fill such as CB and pass rusher. CB and a DE that can play the run and pass rush are the two hardest positions to fill. Patriots hit a home run last year (on par with the Seymour pick); wouldn't it be great to another top CB on the other side? Pass rusher is the biggest need...either at OLB or DE....fill those needs and then look around for a WR or RB.

Mark Ingram just ran a 4.58, furthering my belief he is a BJGE clone. :D

Edit: 2nd time 4.61

I'll be very surprised if BB goes RB early in draft....can see him going for DE - OT and OLB first 3 picks....BPA at each postion in any order....will he combine picks and move up in the draft to grab a top 10 player is the big ???.....

If a highly rated CB falls, add that to the mix also....Bodden and McCourty make a very nice combo to begin with so I don't see that as a bigger need than a pass rushing DE or OLB.....

JMHO :)

this is how i want the pats first 3 picks to go

#17 Cameron Jordan, DE
#28 Justin Houston, OLB
#33 Danny Watkins, G

My fav realistic RB prospects right now are:

Delone Carter 5'8 222 ran 4.53 Mid Round
Allen Bradford 5'10 242 ran 4.56 UDFA
Mikel Leshoure 5'11 227 ran 4.56 Don't know his projection right now but i expect him to slip due to having more game speed than track speed.
Mario Fannin 5'10 231 ran 4.37 His stock is going to rise fast after that 40 he put up, so he is probably off my board.

BJGE may not be a highly regarded stud but he proved he can be an efficient RB. The Pats will always be a pass first team with TB at the helm so I would say that a #1 WR and interior OL are first priorities ON OFFENSE.

However, the pass rush must be upgraded FIRST. They drafted lower round DE's but to provide depth more and possibly find a gem. Perhaps they see a gem but fans haven't so we have to believe that this group is merely depth players. Banta-Cain is ideally suited to come in on situational passing downs and Ninkovich should back up Cunningham (provided he continues to progress). I would lay money that the brass would prefer a stud 5-technique DE fall to them and they may even move up if they covet someone. This defense has been in decline since Seymour began fading 3-4 years ago. However a ROLB needs to be brought in through draft of FA. All I know for sure is that I trust BB and staff will improve this team.

I trust him a lot more when drafting for the defense but last year was an anomaly; he hit home runs with Gronk and Hernandez while Spikes and Cunningham have yet to prove themselves. Of course McCourty was the best pick since Seymour.

17. Cam Haywood 34 dt
28. Jon baldwin wr
33. Steven Wisniszski c/g
60. Greg Romeus olb pitt 265lbs
74. John moffit og
92. Jordon toddman rb 4.4 40

I'd like to see the Pats use those first three draft picks on a DE, OLB and OL.

As far as a RB goes I'd rather wait and go for somebody like Shane Vereen, Jordan Todman or Roy Helu. Leonard Hankerson would be a nice WR to add if he's still available with the Pats late 2nd round pick.

If you're looking for names to check out, here you go; you can find a lot more discussion on the players and positions in the Draft Forum.

C: If the Pats want to look for a replacement for Dan Koppen there is Mike Pouncey, though many consider him to be an NFL guard rather than center; he'll probably go late in the first round. After Wisniewski there's a bunch of 4th-5th and later round guys. One person the Pats did talk to is Brandon Fusco from Slippery Rock; he's 6-4, 302 and projected to go in the 5th or 6th round.

G: Danny Watkins or Ben Ijilana are guys the Pats could use at #28 or #33.

T: A lot of possibilities with one of those first three picks, such as Anthony Castonzo, Tyron Smith, Nate Solder, Gabe Carimi, Derrick Sherrod.

DE: Cameron Jordan, Cameron Heyward, Muhammed Wilerson, JJ Watt, Corey Liuget, Adrian Clayborn, Allen Bailey.

OLB: Aldon Smith, Justin Houston, Akeem Ayers (I'm not a big fan of Ayers), Brooks Reed, Mark Herzlich.

A bit later in the draft maybe Sam Acho, Pernell McPhee, Greg Romeus, or Cliff Matthews at DE/OLB.

I love this BUT; BB never drafts what we think.
This will never happen imo. Bet we take a DB with one of these pick.

pick 17: Gabe Carimi OT
Pick 28: Cameron Heyward DE
Pick 33: Justin Houston OLB
Pick 60: Benjamin Ijalana OG
Pick 74: Quinton Carter FS
Pick 92: Niles Paul WR
Pick 124: Bilal Powell RB
Pick 156: Ugo Chinasa DE/OLB conversion
Pick 188 Greg McElroy QB

pick 17: Gabe Carimi OT
Pick 28: Cameron Heyward DE
Pick 33: Justin Houston OLB
Pick 60: Benjamin Ijalana OG
Pick 74: Quinton Carter FS
Pick 92: Niles Paul WR Probably isn't on Pats list because of maturity issues. see - 2x DUI in 2 years.
Pick 124: Bilal Powell RB
Pick 156: Ugo Chinasa DE/OLB conversion
Pick 188 Greg McElroy QB

Chinasa - Fits the mold, but questions about his consistency raise a flag.

I like the McElroy pick as I see him as another player who the Pats could develop into a successful back-up QB.

I'll be honest. I'd rather have Cam Jordan over Heyward. I think that Houston is going to go higher than expected and that Kerrigan will fall to the Pats late in the 1st.

I don't know enough about Ijalana to say whether I'd rather have him over someone like Watkins or Pouncey.

I think I'd prefer Hunter over Powell at RB.
