Reiss says he is a special teams player, he plays safety.

if you arent familiar with him you arent alone, he was cut by the broncos after suffering an injury, the patriots quickly signed him and put him on IR. this guy is apprently good enough to pay his entire salary for a year while he recovers on IR.

So what is this guys deal? the patriots have just extended him.

If i remember, he is a big safety, and BB clearly saw something in him to use a TC roster spot on an injured player!

I watched him play his whole college career at ASU. Big body and impressive timed speed, but doesn't play physical or intense. Inconsistent in coverage but will make plays from time to time. Maybe he can make a good gunner if you get his mindset right.

Stole him off Josh who made the rookie mistake of IR'ing way too early and trying to sneak him through waivers.

Think Bill had seen something from his few games in college. Could be our 5th Safety in one of the Special Teams slots for next season alongside Slater and White.

Guess he'll be competing with a guy like Sergio Brown or Bret Lockett for that position. With Page and McGowan likely fighting it out for 4th Safety.

Great measurables. 4.34 40 yard dash at Combine. 6'2" 230 Lbs. Jr. year when healthy at Arizona state, 82 tackles, 3 picks.

Good in both the box and in coverage.

I believe he also stood out on STs when Josh sneaked past Bill in 09.

he's a good ST player who may get a few snaps at DB if he makes the team

Hopefully we sign Page and McGowan, or at least one of them. I actually like both guys and what they do in their specific roles here. I believe both are UFA's however.

Agree on that, I like them both.

We've got 4 good Safeties, I'm on the record that right now, I feel Meriweather is 3rd at best in terms of consistency and quality.

But, I want to see what Matt Patricia does with all of them.

Would that be the probowl safety you view as 3rd???... guess in other players and coaches eyes he has more value than most on this board would give him.

Not a huge fan of Meriweather.. but he is somewhat revered in the NFL..

You know Vince Young and David Garrard are pro-bowlers.

And DeAngelo Hall.

Meriweather finished 2nd in Safety Voting from fans.

People see the big hits and the big plays.

They don't see Meriweather taking a bad angle across the field and taking out his own Cornerback.

I think he's salvagable and could be made into a very good Safety.

Right now, he isn't.

You know that the coaches and players also vote on All Pro's??? All three voters are considered, so it is not a popularity contest by fans..

From my memory of reading at the time BB nabbed him from Denver, was that he was a ST Gunner, and well liked by O'Brian. Media in Denver and NE thought it was a solid move, even though he would likely get IR and not be seen till next season. It was also viewed as stealth roster move that BB got the better of his student McDaniels.

Our ST depth is actually very good.

Pro Bowl. All-Pro is just the media (who have no say in Pro Bowl voting).

I've always thought Vince Young is good but just didn't get along with his team.

Belichick is also on the record. Meriweather played in over 80% of the defensive reps, with Chung and Sanders both over 70%. Our #4 safety (Page or Brown) were in on 25% of the defensive reps.

I think that who plays a bit more makes little difference. We have three fine safeties. Our #4 (veteran backup) will be filled by a free agent. Certainly, Page and McGowan will get first look.

We usually have 1-2 positions for safeties who play ST's. These are really special teams positions. We are well-stocked with Brown, Barrett and Lockett.

Umm.. Not quite accurate. The Broncos wanted to IR Barrett. However, if a team wants to IR a player prior to like the 2nd or 3rd week of training camp, the player must pass through waivers. And it was through that waiver process that the Pats claimed him. The Pats then waited until Barrett could be put on the IR without having to be waived and did so.
