I remember that game and that year. If John Hannah and Leon Gray didn't hold out the first few games of the season that year it would have been a different story. That was also the game that the Patriots lost on a really bad call when Jones fumble but the Refs blew the whistle too early, Bad call.
Great find love seeing the games as was originally broadcast.

'76 was a special year for Pats fans. We had been teased with a couple of relatively decent seasons after Plunkett was drafted, but the bottom line was that the team had still not had a single winning season in ten years - since being upset by the Jets on the final game of the '66 season and therefore missing out on an opportunity to go to the AFL title game and play in the first of what would later be known as the Super Bowl.

To this day there is still a lot of 'what if' speculation regarding the Ben Dreith game - but in my mind I am absolutely confident the Pats would have won the Super Bowl had they beat the Raiders in that game.

I could be wrong on the tie-breaking procedures. But, on the next to last weekend of the 77 season. Baltimore had 3 losses. Miami had 3 and we had 4. We beat Miami giving them 4. Baltimore benefitted by losing to detroit. And, had a punt blocked with about 30 seconds left giving them 4. If we beat Baltimore and force a 3-way tie. We'd have won the division. By losing that game, Baltimore left us with nothing to play for. If we win, we tie Miami because they had a better division record. If we lost, Baltimore wins division because they had a better conference record than Miami. Baltimore used to start their games at 2p. And, I honestly feel they threw that game once they saw our score. Giving us nothing to play for in week 14.


I wouldn't say we were better than pittsburgh in 76. But, once Bleier and Franco Harris got hurt in their divisional playoff game we were. Their defense was ridiculously good that year. In their last 9 games they gave up 28 points. Yes. 28. An avg of 3 per game. Had 5 shutouts.

One of my memories of Bert Jones — I'm pretty sure this was him — was this was when the referees used to fire a 'gun' to sound the end of the half. The ref was a little unprepared for the end of the half, as a play was going on, and he pulled it out just as Jones was getting up after being tackled; the ref rushed and the gun went off right in Jones's ear. Man he was mad. Anyone else remember this?

No you are so right, we would have been better if the colts won, because if the pats beat the colts the following week, the pats would have won the division because of a sweep... the colts were on the decline but the game against us was the last hurrah for the baltimore bert jones colts..

Very cool.
I am a bit younger than you but I also grew up liking Grogs...until I realized he was a bad QB who had no value for the ball. I thought he was more exciting than Eason, but not the better QB.
In some way to me, Grogan was a poor man's Bledsoe...
...and Eason was a leper's Brady.

Loved that vid until the end. I remember jumping up and down like a little kid yelling to my wife, we're going to the SB!! Then having my heart broken in tiny pieces when they called the roughing on Sugar Bear.

Years later, Ken Stabler said that Hamilton never touched his head. That's why the "tuck rule" was so sweet. After all that time, we got pay back.

BTW, I know that was not the AFCCG, but the Steelers were devastated by injuries and a win was all but assured. The Vikings would have been not match for the Patriots in that SB either.

YES! Awesome game! I was 13 at the time. I actually first registered on this board under the name BobWindsor a few years ago, but there was some problem confirming the registration.

Some great players -- Vataha, man. And I had to LOL at Tarkenton whipping that ball at Bolton after a TD. One his best throws ever. Dude was PO'd.

Wow, brought back alot of memories. Pretty boy Bert could really chuck it, Bert and Little Joe Washington scared the daylights out of me every time we played the Colts.

Do any of you guys remember George Atkinson of the Raiders walking up to Russ Francis during the middle of one of the Pats/Raiders classics, winding up and punching Russ's lights out right through his face mask. I couldn't believe my eyes, I knew the Raiders were all soft as grapes, especially their secondary, but when I saw Atkinson do that to the 6'6" Francis, I couldn't believe it. That team feared no one.

I used to have an old Patriots tape from the John Hanna days and watched it a few years ago. I was just amazed at how well the Patriots ran the ball. They just killed guys.

Speaking of Hog Hanna...me and a friend (who can back me up on this) were at Training Camp at Bryant College watch watching the new D-Linemen work against the O-line. There was a rookie 7-rounder (Perry Brooks or Giles Alexander?) line up against Hanna. Crash crunch the usual stuff until this rookie roughed up Hanna after the whistle. That was a mistake. During the next drill Hanna hit him so hard that he landed flat on his back. He scrambled to his feet and Hanna decked him again. He was cut the next day.
