Colts released SS Bob Sanders.
The only surprise is that the two sides couldn't come to a mutual agreement on a restructured deal. Sanders, having played just nine games in the past three years, was never going to see the $12.5 million over the final two years of his deal. The two-time All-Pro has undergone multiple knee operations plus surgery to both biceps, a shoulder, and an elbow since winning the 2007 Defensive Player of the Year award. He's going to have to accept an incentive-laden contract with very little guaranteed money on his next contract. The Colts haven't ruled out bringing him back after he explores the free agent market.

This is the first cut I've ever seen that immediately made me think the Pats might be interested. I'd love to do a "sign the beast" thread, but won't demean the possibility by actually creating one.

He pocketed $25M of his $37.5M 2007 contract extension and played in 9 games in the last 3 seasons...

He still wants to play but no one is going to give him any guaranteed money to so he may end up retired. Even if you incentivized a deal for him with roster bonuses tied to games played, thing is you can't count on him for any...which means just using a roster spot on him comes at a cost.

That the Colts couldn't find a way to do something via restructure of his remaining $12.5M over 2 seasons to hang onto him tells me he doesn't intend to play on an incentivized pay as you go deal (at least at this time because he's likely delusional as most players are) and they have no reason to believe anything will have changed via his durability.

Yeah I think he will be back with the Colts or retire, the guy just cannot stay healthy. Im surprised it took this long for the Colts to release him, he was making good $ and has done absolutely nothing the last 3 years. Sanders has only played 14 games twice in his 6 year career (14 in 05, 15 in 07), every other year he has played in 6 games or less.

Bill Polian is labeled a genius, but re-signing Sanders and some of their first round picks make me think the guy is overrated. It was stupid to give Sanders as much as he did based on his injury history.

I think Steve from Fall River might be having a heart attack today over the prospects of him signing with the Pats since even today he still biatches that the Pats drafted Ben Watson over Bob Sanders.

I'd also shy away from calling him in jury prone since the Colts D-line was so porous against the run that they'd count on this 5'9 guy to lay the lumber. Ridiculous.

I've been watching the Patriots enough to know that's only bad news when that happens. I can remember the Patriots relying on strong safeties to creep into the box like that in years in which the D was really bad.

He is an upgrade over Page and McGowen. Because he can't play 60 snaps a game, he is not an upgrade over BM, JS or PC. If he did play 60 snaps a game, he is.

Pats run defense isn't as good as you think. They were sub-standard in 3rd and short.

I agree...this has Jets written all over it..one year contract with high profile team...a career resurrection opportunity...and he has pretty feet.

Thats bad logic, because the colts couldnt restructure and get him to walk away from that money and except whatever incentive ladden deal they came up with means no one on an open market could.

To me the most logical thought process to me would be that the Colts likely leave an offer on the table for him and say go find something better if you can. Might in the end Sanders decide the injury risk isnt worth the incentive ladden deal, Sure. But I dont think the fact the Colts couldnt get him to accept a bad deal means no one else can. Instead I would think Sanders said no restructure and I play for this or cut me so I can find top dollar on an open market which you can be involved in.

The thing was Polian didn't have to either, Sanders had a couple of years left on his rookie deal and he ripped them up to make him the highest paid safety in the league in addition to extending him early...durability red flags be damned...during the last week of his DPOY 4th year (and it would turn out final) healthy season. Things Bill tends not to do only to get lambasted for.

They sunk $25M into him over the last 4 years for which they saw him play in 9 games. They will yet take a dead cap hit of close to $5M by cutting him. He's not coming back to Indy now unless it's on a minimum deal plus potential (NLTBE...) playing time incentives. He won't find much else on the horizen under a new cap, either. He's worth more to Indy than he is anyone because of what he meant to their somewhat peculiar defense on those rare occasions when he was healthy. And the guy who replaced him in a manner of speaking is also a FA.
