I just wanted to ask. As we have two first round picks is there a player you would go out and get with two first round picks? A front three of Ngata, Wilfork and Warren obviously is something to drool over. So I was wondering who out there would have a look at that scenario as a positive one for this team? There are people on this board who are saying use our two firsts to trade up and get "insert name here" well Ngata is a proven beast in the NFL so in my opinion that would be the safer move.

Second part of the question is: if like some people have suggested may happen, FA comes after the draft ... hypothetically could BB trade down from 17 and 28 respectively (while accumulating later picks like we normally do) to get picks 31 and 32 (this is obviously just hypothetical example) and then trade them to Baltimore for Ngata as they are in fact two first round picks.

I don't know if I am personally for or against it and I know it wont happen, but to me trading the two firsts for Ngata and paying him is a safer move than trading them for a top 5 pick then paying that person.

An interesting idea. But I personally want to see those two first-rounders actually used (a novel concept for BB) on young defensive studs.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

Two 1st's is a lot to give up....there are only so many players in the league that I would give up two 1st's for, I don't think Ngata is one of them.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

Let's find our own dominant pass rushers through the draft. We will save money and have them longer... and after all, we do have one of the best (BB) making the draft choices.

I would be absolutely stoked if we did get a player like Ngata but I think Bill values draft picks much more than many other coaches. The players that we do pick up will probably be decent but respected veterans through FA.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

You can't just give up two firsts and get him. You have to give him a huge contract, to the point where the Ravens refuse to match. That's not the kind of thing that Bill does.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

The problem with such a trade is that not only would you give up 2 first round picks but then you have to PAY the guy alot more than the equivalent. It would be interesting if dropping down would make that possible but I think because the CBA wont be done by draft time all trades for established players will be moot.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

I personally wouldn't do it because of the contract you'd have to offer and pats don't have much room for too many big contracts with the young players going to need some in 2-3 years. But Ngata would be the only player I would even consider doing it for. Wilfork & Ngata would be ridiculous. If the draft class was weak enough and the ravens weren't going to go into a big bidding war MAYBE.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

The first round pick is the most valuable asset a franchise has. I wouldn't give two firsts for DeMarcus Ware. Teams that win are the ones who predate on those who are willing to make deals like this.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

Interested to see if someone inquires about manning though. I'd say its a one in a million he leaves. But if someone like the vikings came calling with a lot of cash. You just never know....

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

Not that it makes a ton of difference in the odds of acquiring Ngata, but it's worth noting that the two 1sts are only mandatory if we sign Ngata to an offer sheet that Baltimore refuses to match. We can still work out a trade with the Ravens for much less than that.

No way I'd give up two 1s for Ngata though. If it was for say pick 28, I might.

That's a lot of eggs in one basket.

Imagine if he blows out a knee, or even worse, a hip.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

Ngata is one of the best defensive players in the NFL. I would do that in a minute.

That said, the picks you surrender have to be of equal or better value than your draft slot. So, the Pats cant' trade down below their draft slot and sign him as a franchise player.

I could be wrong but I would have to think that franchised players would have to be traded for a teams original numbered pick otherwise they would just trade down like you said. If they were to sign Ngata, they would probably have give up this years #28 pick as well as next years pick while keeping # 17 this year.

Mostly correct:

(1) The minimum franchise price would be the Pats' own first in 2011 and 2012 (i.e., equivalent of a 1 + 2 this year), so there'd be no good reason to overpay with two 1s this year.

(2) That said, the rules actually state that you can use your own original pick in a round or any higher pick, at least in that round (it's not clear to me if a team could use a first-round pick to sign a second-round tender RFA). To use a hypothetical example, in 2009, when the Broncos had the #12 pick, they could NOT use Chicago's #18 pick as compensation for a franchise tag. If the situation had been reversed, however, they could have.

yes you would. :)

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

I think its a hard question actually.

There is no question that 2 1s and a big money contract are a lot to swallow. The risk is high no question.

But....

This team went 14-2 last year and with the exception of a couple players that need to be locked up (Mankins, BJGE and Light) the same squad is returning.

The teams needs are still a pass rushing OLB, some good talent at G and maybe C and another RB. Could they pick that talent up in rounds 2-7? Sure.

Brady will continue to age and at some point, the team will need to lean on the defense more.

Ngata is 27. A 4 year deal wouldn't be unreasonable. I'd do it.

And if the same situation were to present itself for Demarcus Ware, I'd do that too. Special defensive players are a rare breed. IMO those two players fall into that category.

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

I saw this on espn a little while ago....and while Ngata is a great player, 2 first round picks is simply too much. Like someone mentioned a few posts ago, what if he blows out a knee. He's not that old, but he's not that young either (27) so at this point, I don't think this will happen....

Re: Ngata Franchised - Thought with our 2 1st's

the reason the pats have two #1's is cause they traded the best 3-4 DE in the NFL so why would the pats give up a #1 and then have to pay that guy big money Haloti Ngata is not as good as Seymour, just look up there stats Ngata plays in a attacking style defense and Seymour played in a sit back and eat up blocks style defense and he still had better stats

Who says the Pats would HAVE to give BOTH firsts from this year? If all its going to take is #28 this year and #32 next year, then HELL Yeah you do it. We'd still have #17 this year and i think there's a good chance we trade into the first for next year. So even though you're giving up two firsts, because of the smart moves of the past few years, we're still going to have #1 picks sitting there for us. Also, there isn't a lot of room on our roster(To use up ALL of our draft picks) and pick #17 PLUS Ngata would be exactly what a team like the pats(Window of opportunity is closing) needs. Maybe trade pick #33 for a first next year and trade UP into the second round using 3rd round picks this year etc. IF the Pats wanted to do this, i think it could be done and i'd welcome it!
