Who would YOU rather a Patriot next season?

Forget the logistics for a minute and vote based on who you would rather have.

mankins, but why Seymour?

This is a no-brainer. Anything that revolves around protecting the franchise in Mr. Brady takes precedent over anything, especially when the OL would become a huge liability without Mankins and the questions around center and left tackle..

Seymour would rather play for an 0-16 team than play for NE

Will you EVER get it that he NEVER wants to be a Patriot again?

People seem to forget the Seymour New England traded when they whine about how much New England needs him. 2006 was really his last great year in New England (I know he had 8 sacks in 2008 but he didn't command the blockers/attention he used to, it wasn't the same Seymour who couldn't be blocked without a double team). I'd much rather have Mankins over the complacent, lazy and overweight Seymour New England traded to Oakland who did nothing other than whine about a new contract.

Consider the O Line play last year before Mankins and after he came back, this is a no brainer..

A future HOF 3-down 34 end is just more valuable than a left guard, no matter who they are protecting.

Mankins made a sizable difference in our offensive performance, no doubt. I sincerely hope we re-sign him.

But this defense has not recovered from Seymour's departure and still has no adequate replacement. Connolly can, at the very least, perform adequately. There's a reason why this team was hesitant to pay Mankins, and it's b/c their OL coach is the best in the business at coaching a guy up.

We have not, however, figured out how to coach up a 34 end.

I'd agree with this. For a one year rental, I'd rather have a Hall-of-Fame, All-Decade, defensive end for one more year than a Pro-Bowl LG.

I voted Mankins because he is more important to this team than Seymour could ever be.

Raider fans found out what we already knew about Seymour.

2 decent games, followed by 1 above decent game, to get you all jacked up, then on the bench with some phantom injury for 2-3 games. This is the kid's MO.

If we're gonna beef up the line, let's get a young NFL proven lineman with a lot of upside and years in the tank.

Seymour might not ever play again, if the league cans the season in 2011.

He was on his last legs in 2010.

The year before he was traded, Seymour tied his career high in sacks and was just 2 tackles shy of his career high in that category.

You don't have to try an sh*t on sey to make your point if you'd rather have mankins. If you think seymour wouldn't have helped us in that jets game than your bat-sh*t crazy. We have no one on this D-line who even resembles 75% of richard seymour. I really hope we get a healthy tiny back.

I am going to vote mankins because of the TFB factor but only for that reason as the makeup of the current patriots roster is built to win on his back. We all know we won bowls without a dominating Offense before and average\mediocre Olineman during said superbowls.

Edit: Seymour was a DPOY candidate at one point last year as well.

Statistically speaking, the rush defense got worse in 2009.

I think you're underrating the loss of production from Harrison, Bruschi, and Vrabel in this equation.

HUGE.

And it took 6 years to find Law's replacement.

If money is not an issue. I'll take Seymour. Stud DE over a stud guard any day .

At first I thought the Seymour trade was good value. Raiders top 10 pick, disgruntled player. I held onto this notion until this year. Even if he only played in 8 games a year for us he was still better than anything we had as long as he played in the playoffs.

Looking back I think the deal sucks, especially since we lost 2 seasons from a pro bowler. He played well for the Raiders, well enough to where he helped the defense shaft the Pats out of a top 10 pick.

Don't get me wrong, receiving a first round pick for an investment that you placed a first round pick on, is very rare to get back. However, his time wasn't through as far as being a pro bowl type player. It may have cost us a championship.

To be a hyprocrit. It is just not Belichicks way. He is not going to let a player that signed a fair contract at the time, btich and moan, dog it in practice, allegedly fake injuries and play when he wants to play. It just doesn't happen here because everyone is accountable in BB's system including his coaches ala Corwin. Especially himself. There is no proof that all this happened. Only the coaches and players know for certain. Just like the Moss situation.

It is what it is. Now Seymour is truly getting up there in age. Long term I would take Mankins because he is younger. If I had the opportunity to tag either or this season and they would give me a 100% effort it would be Seymour all day long. Guards can be picked up in the draft and play well. Dominating Defensive ends are a crapshoot and hard to find.
It's too bad he was ever traded in the first place.

There are a number of ways to quantify "value". Is value the worth the pick or the production derived from the player chosen over a 1,2, 10 year span? Clearly BB thinks he has a shot at a pretty darn good player w/ the pick that has the potential to be a Seymour-like player. Has Seymour played better in 2010 than he did in 08? That is debatable. At the time everyone thought it was good value. Most still do.

Sey has played well. We don't know yet if the deal sucks or not- yet. What we do know with almost certainty is that Sey was not the difference between winning a SB and not.

Obviously BB didn't think he could or want to sign him. If he left via a FA, he would have fetched a 2nd-4th round pick as compensation. The Pats did better than that.

BBs MO has always been to get rid of a player when...

-The team has no shot resigning him
-If the player is a problem in the locker room
-If the player's projected skills will erode next year or considerably over the life of the current contract.
-If the team doesn't think the player is worth the money.
