Mankins 'Definitely' to Be Franchised
By: Ian Logue

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald writes that Logan Mankins will definitely have the franchise tag placed on him during the 14-day window given teams, and says it could potentially happen as early as today. ...

IMO at this point, it is good business to do it. He could stay, which would be great. If he leaves, they can at least control the destination and potentially get something better than a compensatory selection.

No surprise there.

Why is it so hard to give this guy an extension? He's one of the top players at his position and relatively young.I'd hate to see him leave and i think he is worth the money he asks for.

They already offered him a deal that would make him the 3rd-highest paid at his position, and he not only declined but publicly trashed his boss. If he was reasonable it never would have gotten to this point.

No one knows the facts here. The terms of what the Pat's actual contract offer is pure speculation (see structure in payouts and guaranteed money). As a data point, Jahri Evans received a seven-year, $56.7 with $12m bonus included in $19 million paid out in 2010 and a total of $25.7 million over the first three years of his new deal. That $8.6m/yr ave over the 1st 3 years of the deal.

It's been assumed that the Pats offered Mankins an ave of $7m per season. So if Mankins used the same % (33%) y1 and 1st 3 years of the total deal value, Mankins would have expected an offer around $16.4m in year 1 and $22.2m over the 1st 3 years.

Lets compare apples & oranges and look at Brady's contract.

– $26.5M in 2010 (Y1) - The original $6.5M in salary and old bonus, plus $4M in new money and $16M signing bonus.
– $36.5M 2011 (Y2) – This is his 2011 earning plus 2010.
– $48.5M 2012 (Y3) – Three year total.

Wilfork received an $18m signing bonus and was paid $18.7m in 2010

Brady's up-front cash was 22% of the deal. I really think the guaranteed money and overall deal structure are the sticking points as his agent said that the Pats offer was 20% less than Evans'. My assumption is that he is referring to either the bonus ($9.6m?), year 1 ($15.2m?)or year 3 ($20m?) totals. Could be overall I guess too ($44m)

So my "guess" is that the Pats dont view Mankins in the same catagory of "payout" as Brady and Wilfork.

At least he is not acting like others over being Franchised such as Richard Seymour who went to the media blasting the team about such stuff.

If Kraft cares about keeping Brady upright and healthy all season and to have a decent running game,he will have to empty his pockets to a level that is reasonable between the two.....bottom line

We can't lose Mankins unless there is a Joe Thomas somewhere in the draft...I don't see any.

That's just BS PFP. I'd like Mankins to stay as well, but at what cost. It certainly wouldn't be Brady remaining upright. The Pats were among the best pass blocking OLs in the league BEFORE Mankins came back. And IIRC, Logan was on the field for all of those 6 sacks in the playoff game.

Bottom line, keeping Brady upright isn't the issue here. If Mankins wants to be paid among the elite at his position, he'll stay. If he wants to be the highest paid G in the league then he'll either play under the Franchise tag or be traded elsewhere. Its as simple as that.

BTW- If I were Mankins I's be THRILLED to be franchised. First it sets him up for life with a GUARANTEED 8 figure salary. PLUS once he signs it, he's guaranteed the money whether there is a season or not. He's way ahead of most everyone else in the league.

I just hate it when these mooks whine about the agony of being a "franchise" player.

We can lose Mankins, but kiss that 2007-esque super offense goodbye. Our line is just serviceable without Logan.

I'd love to see Mankins signed to a long term deal, but if he won't sign, we have to move on. Forcing him to play only goes so far with his attitude.

What you're claiming is simply not true, according to both Mankins' agent and Mike Reiss.

PWP: I believe this to be true. We'll see.

I believe that that is not so. Lockout puts things in stasis until resumption. No games, no pay. Franchise pay is per game just like other players.

Franchise him, cuff him, pay him, sign him...whatever...just keep him here!!!

What you're claiming is simply not true, according to both Mankins' agent and Mike Reiss.

And it is according to Albert Breer. I'm pretty sure we can discount what his agent says, however.

Now would you like to argue that Mankins acted like a child and called out his boss in public? What am I saying? You probably do.

Breer was ignoring the financial impact of forcing Mankins to play a season under the tender numbers. As for discounting the agent, why would we want to do that?

Uh, because, just like defense attorneys, they'll say whatever is in their client's best interests, regardless of the veracity of it.

You really will argue anything. It's damn amazing.

Miguel detailed Evans contract at the time and it was $25M (less workout bonuses which have to be earned by meeting offseason workout requirements many don't bother to) in the first 3 (2010-2012). Reports at the time also indicated that Patriot sources claimed that Mankins deal while averaging less offered upwards of $25M guaranteed. There are different ways to asses a contract depending on your POV or mood or issue. First 3 or guaranteed money would be the gold standard. First 3 is usually implicitly guaranteed by dead cap hit if cut. Guaranteed is guaranteed (and the Patriots supposedly indicated there was no phony BS tied to his). So Mankins issue was AAV, or the unguaranteed $$$ and length of deal. Evans deal was also an extension covering 6 new years plus his RFA year. Mankins was for 5 new years plus his RFA year. He apparently wanted another year and didn't want his RFA year factored in and he wanted an AAV of $8M. Mankins is 2 years older than Evans so he wasn't getting that here, not to mention this team eschews longer term deals. Wilfork got 5. Brady got 4. Mankins wasn't getting 7.

Yes, pointing out the problems with your claim when you're attacking Mankins and calling him unreasonable is all on me. Just like wondering why the Agent should be ignored, when his position has been been backed up by Reiss, is on me for daring to question you on it.

What's amazing is that people like you think you should just be able to make false or questionable claims without them being responded to.

Didn't think of the angle that Mankins may have wanted 7 years. Seems like that would be a pretty big sticking point.

Breer said one thing. Reiss said another. Even if you believe Reiss' "20% less" report, we have no idea what that even means. Total contract? Per year? Either way, he was offered a lot of money. Whether or not it was what he thinks he was worth, he took the low road and hurt his own case.

You go on believing what an agent...the guy who gets paid based on what his client gets paid, by the way...says. They're normally so trustworthy.

One last thing that you'll ignore: Reiss didn't "back up" Bauer's assertion. Bauer was his freakin' source of the "20% less" info, and never offered up any details beyond that.
