Before you go crazy about the title of the thread, just read.

With the talk about finding Brady's replacement I thought this would be a decent discussion to start.

Lets pretend Newton falls to #17 (or even #28 for arguments sake), he is obviously a physical freak of nature and has a lot of potential but also a lot of risk. 4+ years behind Brady could be a godsend for any QB and one who already has those kind of skills....just think about it.

Personally I am opposed to this idea, OLB, DE, and OL first please. I want to hear what you guys think about taking Newton (still pretending that he drops that far).

My reaction is the same as when somebody made the same thread about Dane Locker. The only difference is that Newton is likely a top-5 pick, where (Jake) Locker doesn't belong in the first.

If he falls to #17, teams will likely be falling all over themselves trying to reach Foxboro.

Keep in mind that for Brady's four most recent seasons as a starter, his primary backup has been making <$750K/yr. The #17 pick gets >$2M/yr.

Not a fan of Newton AT ALL.. But this could be moot if a Rookie Wage scale is in place next season. It's a CBA bullet point that I am all but certain the players union will be willing to concede if the owners back off of some of the other proposals.

If you're talking about Newton being brought aboard as Brady's eventual replacement, I think that's problematic whether Newton is drafted at #17 or #74. And it has nothing to do with Newton's talent, which I happen to think is pretty good.

Newton would have to be on the 53-man along with Hoyer and he'd be effectively red-shirted like Taylor Price was this season. Definitely not inconceivable. But the reason I think he'd need to be red-shirted is that his current effectiveness is 50% based in what he can do with his legs. Yeah, he has shown some raw ability as a drop-back passer, but it seems obvious (to me, at least) that this part of his game is going to need a lot of work.

Meanwhile, there would be severe constraints on how useful his current skillset would be, mainly because there are only so many practice reps to go around. Practice reps attempting to make effective use of Newton and his current skillset would involve everyone on the offense. It would affect blocking schemes, WR patterns, pretty much everything. The Pats would either be spending about as much time on plays involving Newton as they spend practicing any "trick play", or they'd have to be taking practice reps away from their base offense/gameplan - especially Hoyer's reps (including even scout team reps).

I'm not saying that this is impossible, just impractical. Seems to me that, for his first year at least, he'd be effectively a P/S (or IR) player taking a spot on the 53-man. Again, citing Price (or even Kaczur or Fred Taylor), the Pats showed some willingness this past season to do exactly this with certain players, at least on offense - so, not impossible. Just saying that this circumstance would need to be accounted for in final 2011 roster calculations.

Cam Newton is way overrated. He is a young Donovan McNabb.....getting ready to barf up a storm....

If you knew that Newton was going to have McNabb's career he'd get drafted first overall no questions asked. You're talking about a borderline hall of fame candidate there.

I dont think Newton will come close to Donovan McNabb. He might have physical talent but the guy will never become even an average QB in the NFL. I know people like to turn athletes into football players and dream on their potential, but turning athletes into QB's is rediculous, especailly for the Pats. Being a QB in the NFL, especially in the Pats system is one of the most complex roles in sports, being a super athlete isn't going to help you in your progressions or help you read defensive schemes. If this topic were in three years time with a QB prospect that actually has a chance to succeed I might be interested, but Cam Newton in 2011, no chance.

I dont want to sound like im bashing Dufflebagz here because this isnt a personal attack on the thread, im just confused as to how this guy is a top QB prospect. If he was a late round flier for a team sure, but as a 1st round pick? I know Tim Tebow went in the first round and he wasn't as physically gifted as Newton, but that guy was a born leader and a winner. Would I have drafted him in the first round? no, but I can see why a team did, he's got a spark. I dont see that with Newton. Sure he won a National Title, but he wasn't the leader or the inspiration to his team that Tebow, or even Vince Young was. I see him as Vince Young 2.0, a guy thats going to make a highlight reel play occasionally to get ESPN excited, but overall he will be a mediocre QB. He's a great college player no doubt, but any team considering him in the first round is crazy.

Cam Newton = Tim Tebow + Stronger Arm - Intangibles.

Pass.

If he falls to 17........Arizona at 38 + 2012 first. I think Wisenhunt would love to have a mobile QB like Ben again. That has potential to be a top 10 if not top 5 pick with a rookie cap.

I'm opposed to drafting any QB in the first round until Brady is done. Waiting in the wing doesn't always equal Aaron Rodgers. Sometimes you get a Matt Leinhart.

I clearly said "I am opposed to this idea".....
I am so opposed to this I didn't get through your entire post :)

If you'd need a new team for a "laptop thief", what would you have done if the Pats signed Vick?
Thankfully we didn't.

The problem with $cam is there's too much "stuff" that happens with him. Stealing the laptop. Attempting to destroy evidence. Supposed academic "issues" at Florida. Then with the PFP at Auburn, he's either lying about not knowing his Dad was selling him or is a ridiculously immature kid for having Daddy pick his school just 14 months ago. Even an 18 year old coming out of HS generally has a big say in what college he picks, with advice from parents. For a kid to have no input at all just 14 months before entering the NFL draft doesn't work for me. I can just see Cecil holding a press conference because Bill picked on poor $cam in a meeting.

This guy is a child in a man's body and unless he has a monstrous emotional growth spurt he is a disaster waiting to happen.

Disclaimer - I am a Nick Saban fan. Roll Tide :)

Don't g me wrong Newton may make a good Pro. But with being so close to another championship and TFB having 3 more good years, I would not spend a first rounder on a QB.

We need a pass rusher and maybe some OL help.

Oh, I see your reasoning now :D
That's not the reason for my reasoning, $cam may bother me more because of that but it doesn't change the fact that he is an immature scumbag who I want nowhere near our team.

He hasn't done anything to demonstrate that he has the intelligence, work ethic, or character to be an NFL QB, much less a Patriots QB.

The only contact I want him having with our team is being on the receiving end of a Vince Wilfork bellyflop.

As true as this may be, is it really that serious? Every team has done scumbag things before, even our beloved Patriots. So what? I'd take a young talent like that anyday. You really think he'd be at Foxboro stealing Tully's or Chungs's laptops?

.... please.
