Which of the two do you feel would have a better chance of success in the Patriots system, given the other current receivers? I'm just interested in people's take around here.

Both could work out from a talent stand point, Young has a history of off-field issues.

I could see Jernigan as an eventual replacement for Deion Branch considering they have similar size and he's a former QB so understands defenses and knows how to get open.

I have heard Maylock and a few others saying that Titus Young could be "Desean Jackson like" big play ability. That perks my interest.

I'm not dying for a WR, but I think that you have to take a look at Young or earlier if Baldwin from Pittsburg is on the board, tall fast, good hands.

A lot depends on how they run at the combine, but Jernigan really impressed me this past season.

If Young didn't have the baggage, I might be tempted, but then again it is easy playing against Idaho, Montana and New Mexico secondary's.

If Baldwin was meaner and nastier he could be the best WR in this draft, a lot depends on how he runs.

From what I have seen of them Titus Young seems more explosive a better big play threat. Jernigan seems to be more quick than fast similar to some of the receivers we have now. I wouldn't be surprised if Jernigan does well in interviews because of his QB past and they also both have returns kicks. Personally I prefer Young.

I think Young has a better chance for success for the Pats but I don't like either one. Jernigan looks like a fine receiver but would be completely redundant with what the Pats already have. Young can get deep but is skinny. He looks more breakable than Desean Jackson. Just can't see Belichick going for a receiver that he is afraid to send over the middle.

Young could be used as a niche/situational guy to take the top off the defense. I can't see what role Jernigan would have if Welker and Edelperson (not to mention Hernandez) are still on the team. I can think of quite a few better options at WR if the Pats want to go that route.

Both have a lot of talent, but they each have their issues as well. Young has documented off-field issues from early in his Boise State career and is a T.O./Ochocinco style of talker.

Jernigan has some issues with his down-the-field route-running.

Seems to me that Jernigan would make more sense (in general, not in comparison to Young) if the Patriots were not planning to bring back Welker after his contract is up, because he seems like a player who could shift from slot to outside and back.

Anyone think I'm reading that wrong?

what are the off the field issues?
Scrapes with the law and coaching staff early on, Boise did a good job of settling him down, but it's hard to see from our perspective whether he's matured or if a strong locker room/coaching staff helped protect him from himself. I've watched a number of games the past couple seasons and there's no doubt QB Kellen Moore had developed a close working relationship with Young and Austin Pettis that kept both receivers fully vested in the offense, but it also appeared Young was the more mentally fragile of the trio. Love him as a player, I just have doubts as to what NE's Personnel department will find when they dig into his head.

I've just not watched him that closely, but NFL Draft Scout compares him to Deion Branch so you're probably correct.

I watched Young and he screamed "Bethel Johnson Redux".

I haven't seen Jernigan, but I also don't believe the Pats need another WR right now.

Unless Taylor Price is the answer then the Pats do need another WR because Tate does NOT look like the answer. Now I don't believe we need to spend anything more than a 2nd or 3rd but our receivers were getting clamped down pretty handily by the Jets CBs in that last playoff loss. None of them were strong enough to defeat the jam or physical enough to fight for the ball when being played in tight coverages.

2006 Greg Jennings reminded me of Jerry Rice in the way that he ran his routes and made plays after the catch.

2011 Titus Young reminds me of Desean Jackson. If he's there late in the second round we have to pounce!

How do you know that Tate isn't the answer?? You can tell after ONE season??? You're crystal ball tell you that?

The Pats have 5 WR in Welker, Branch, Edelman, Tate, and Price. They also have Jenkins, Farnham, Tyree Barnes, and Shun White that they have the rights to. I just don't see a spot for a developmental WR.

The issue against the Jets is that the Pats didn't use the running game enough nor the passing game to the TEs. I disagree with your assessment that Welker, Branch, Edelman, Gronkowski and Hernandez are not strong enough to fight off the jam. They are.

Too many people forget that both Welker AND Tate were coming off knee injuries this year. Both will improve. As will Gronkowski and Hernandez. And as they do, it will open things up if the play calling is there.

Based on what??? Definitely not his Senior Bowl game.. And, Young was doing too much body catching for my liking..

Everyone raved about Young all week during Senior Bowl week practices. ESPN and Walterfootball love him and Walterfootball said he was a cross between Desean Jackson and Mike Wallace. He also showed during the week that he could catch passes with his hands instead of his body. I wouldn't judge him based on the Senior Bowl game in which he was working with terrible QBs. I think this guy is a bigtime prospect but will BB really invest a 2 in a WR when he took Tate and Price that last two years in the 3rd round?

Young is not afraid to run over the middle and he can run all the routes as Boise State has many different routes they ask their WRs to run. I know some people question the competition but he dominated VA Tech with 6 catches for 80 yards and he had 5 catches for 136 vs Oregon State. He also had 8 catches for 72 yards vs TCU in their bowl game last year. This kid has played elite level teams and produced.

I think this kid is the third best prospect at WR behind Green and Jones. Jernigan is a very good WR too and probably the best slot WR in this draft class but we don't need a slot.

He may not have a crystal ball... but I assume he has two eyes...as do I. And nothing about Tate's game suggests that he is the answer at WR.

He is just too stiff in the hips. Reminds me of a slower Bethel Johnson.

Maybe you are seeing something different? I dont know.

Taylor Price seems like he may end up being the better player from what i've seen. But that's not to say he is the answer either... I just think he may have a little more upside than Tate.

You don't set just about every kick and punt return record in the NCAA by being "stiff in the hips." What you saw was a kid learning to trust his knee again.

You clearly missed how bad the blocking on kick-offs was as the year went on. Not sure why it was that way, but it was bad and much of the yardage that Tate got was strictly his own doing.

Plenty about Tate's game suggests that he can be one of the answers at WR, long term, if you stop putting ignorant expectations on the kid and understand what he brings to the table.

He is not a pure speedster and never has been. What he does bring is very good route running ability, very good hands with the strength to beat the press coverage, and very good body control. In college, he was not afraid to go over the middle, though he wasn't used that way much.

Tate has the ability to run the intermediate routes like Branch used to run. And at 5'11 7/8, he's got the height and arm length that Branch doesn't. People seem to have forgotten how little Branch did in his first year. I fully expect Tate to be a 40-50 reception guy next year and 50-60 reception guy in 2 years.
