I suspect that this could very well be Belichick's Plan B (if Light is not re-signed), with a rookie pushing Kaczur, as Vollmer did when he was drafted.

in other news... water is wet :)

Who plays right and left guard?

To me this would be a worst case scenario, in 2010 the team had good stability on offense. If they lose 2 pro bowl starters from the offensive line then they lose an opportunity to continue the re-build of the defense.

Vollmer/Wendell/Koppen/Connolly/Kaczur

Or Mankins at LG if he's resigned. That line right there is begging for half a season of Hoyer.

What's the matter? The OL thread in the main forum moving too fast to follow?

I have to wonder just what shape Kazcur returns in. Backs are very tricky things and I think his injury was severe.

Lots of options at tackle for BB to consider.

But my main premise remains, if Light does not agree to a team friendly deal, BB lets him walk.

Of all the OT's I have seen, the one I like the best is Lee Ziemba of Auburn. Not pretty, but not a finesse guy either. Flat back mauler that moves the pile backwards. In pass coverage he has decent feet and can mirror well. A little trouble sinking the hips due to his length, but that helps him push speed rushers past the QB.

I would love for BB to take him with the Vikings pick and plug him in at ROT for the next decade.

mgteich I'm going to agree with you on this. BB philosphy (from what I can tell and some people refer to) its better to dump a player a year early then a year late. And I think Light might fall into this category.

You have it right and I'll add to it.. I see 2 out of the top 5 picks being used on OL, competing with Kaczur and Neal/Connelly and Mankins either being franchised or resigned.

Your offense line could look like this

LT - Vollmer
LG - Mankins
C - Koppen (Maybe a rookie Center)
RG - Neal/Connelly/ **Koppen???
RT - Kaczur / Rookie

What are the thoughts of sliding Koppen to RG if we draft a Center? Just a thought but he'd add depth to the position if we did this (long shot I know but an idea)

And with Crumpler and Gronk, they could definitely assist a Rookie RT if he had issues.

Hmmmm..... IDK. It just feels to me like we need more power, as well as elite technical competence, at both the RG spot and center. Koppen, Wendell and Ohrnberger all fall around 6'2"/295 and that just doesn't seem to be enough heft for RG anymore, and maybe not even for center. Connolly is 6'4"/313, which seems more like it size-wise for RG at least, but then there's the question of elite technical competence. Neal is a pretty beat up 34-year-old (35 in early October) and I think the odds are about 65:35 he retires.

Agree Neal is probably more likely to retire

I don't see many centers we would draft beating out Koppen. After all, consider that Collmer didn't start in his rookie year. I do want to draft a center to compete this year and in 2012.

Koppen is in the last year of his contract. I don't think that he is a better RG than a C. My BOOTOM LINE on the OC position is that we need to draft a center to compete with Koppen, But Koppen will be either the starting or backup center this year.

At this point in Koppen career it's definitely time to look at his replacement. I am not sure on the draft prospects but If mankins is moved, we should sign Ryan Kalil and draft one of the kids from Wisconsin or florida and let the battle begin between Koppen , Neal and connelly.

Any way I see it, we are drafting two OL with the 1st five picks

I take it you're thinking that Wendell, Ohrnberger and Connolly aren't suitable?

None of these are starting centers or reasonable competitors to be our starting center.

Count me as one more fan that would like to see more power

I don't think there is a Center to be drafted that is a sure fire fit at Center in this draft. The more and more I think about it, the more and more I think Koppen will be suitable for another year. Honestly, the wr's just couldn't get free and Brady held onto the ball longer than normal due to the defensive looks he got. If we score on our first possesions our Center isn't as much as an immediate question mark. Yes we need to start looking though.

As Off The Grid mentioned. Last year was the time to move up and grab a center. The other Pouncey. There just isn't one in this draft. And really, does anyone really stop Ngata in his tracks? Even Mangold got man handled by Wilfork in game 2. Sometimes when someone is that big you need to call the right offenses.

Moffit Wisconsin, the guy from TCU? Possible draftees. There are a couple of more in this draft which are candidates but by no means are they gonna come in and take Koppens job who has 100's of plays memorized without opening a play book.

We do also have Thomas Austin from the P/S. Played OC and LG as a junior at Clemson (2008) - 6'3"/315, 32.4" arms, 9.75 hand. Not especially athletic or speedy, but noted for consistent play, technique.

He played with a nasty disposition at Clemson. I like nasty!

The absolute nastiest center in this draft is Pugh of Auburn. But he is only6'1".

Maybe he can defy the odds and play at a high level with the lower center of gravity like Wilfork and Randle. The main thing everyone is looking for is someone who can hold off the intital burst from that gigantor NT. I don't care if he is 5-8 as long as he is intelligent and can stop the flow of traffic and shuffle around when called upon.

I'll be watching Kirkpatrick from TCU today and see how he does. Too bad he isn't going up against Taylor or Lieugett today. Would of been much better gauge.

i would think that bringing light back wont be the most expensive thing to do. is he really going to break the bank elsewhere in free agency?

How much do you think a pro-bowl LT is worth, especially given that there are no nfl LT's likely to worthy of being drafted in the top of the draft (nfl ready LT's)?

Do you think that Light will take his value by reading this board? Do you think other GM's will use this board to lowball Light?

I think that there are at least a couple of teams in need of a LT who will pay fairly highly for a pro-bowl level LT who is ready to start for the next 3 years. The open question iw whether the patriots are one of those.

If Vollmer is considered a quality probowl LT and we would rather go out a find a RT than sign Light, then indeed the patriots will not be one of those teams.

Personally, I would much rather sign Light. We would then have a probowl quality LT and a probowl quality RT. Of course many here think that we can pick up a probowl quality RT in the 3rd round, ready to start. I know of property in the everglades that I am sure they will consider as an investment.
