I can't see see us passing on OT (or trade down a bit and then picking an OT) if Light is not re-signed.

If Light is re-signed, there is less need with both Light and Kaczur available in addition to Vollmer.

I agree. I think Pats could get a couple of good interior linemen at #60, #74 or #92. I would love to get Moffit. Seems to have Mankins like attitude. Can play C, G or T.

I don't see why they can't do both as long as they get a tackle that is capable of playing guard. I'm not opposed to bringing Light back as long as it's just 2 or 3 years. He's a pretty average LT at this point.

I can. Chances are there will be a front-seven defender on the board that carries a higher grade than any available OT. Combine that with BBs history (Light and Vollmer in 2nd, Kaczur, Kenyatta Jones in 4th) and the presence of guys like LeVoir and Ojinnaka on the roster, I'll be shocked if OT is the call at #17.

Bottom line is that I'm not sure that the OT available will carry first round grades. Right now the only guy I have a 1st round grade on is Carimi. Other GMs will reach for Costonzo, Solder, and others on perceived upside, but Belichick will more likely take a guy with potential later in the draft I think.

I can't remember a draft with a weaker first round for OL so taking an OL at #17 is likely going to be a serious reach. I suppose it's possible they could have an OL with that high a grade who is still available then but doubt it seriously. Re-signing Light is a priority imo, he's a really good OT who has always been completely underappreciated by Patriot fans but who has protected Brady extremely well throughout his time in NE. I don't believe he's looking to break the bank and think they can re-sign him to an affordble deal and move him to RT for the remainder of his career with Vollmer taking over at RT. Kazcur provides adequate depth with LeVoir competing with whomever they bring in as free agents and picks. I believe rebuilding the OL for the future is a priority but don't see the high end talent there to use first rounders in this draft to do so. As you mentioned in another thread there seems to be a good number of OL with second and third round grades so that would be the more likely point to take OL. So far Wisniewski is the OL I like the most in this draft and he can probably play all 3 interior positions. Wisniewski at #28 would be a decent pick and interior OL is a higher priority than OT right now.

The more I know about this OT class in combination with various team needs, the more I'm inclined to think that none of them go before #21 or so, and maybe only one of them in the first round.

I'd re-sign Light if reasonably possible. But an OT still might get serious consideration in the second even so, depending on which OGs are available when. I'm only about 60% confident in the full-season reliability of both Light and Kaczur for 2011 and I'd hate to have to fall back on LeVoir or Ojinnaka for an extended stretch. I'd feel a little more comfortable with, say, Carimi or Castonzo in the fold working with Dante (or even Carpenter later).

If Light can't be signed, I might be looking at an OT earlier, but I'm still not certain that it would be necessary to use the #17.

The way things usually shake out in the end, "boring" BB-type players should fall into the late first and the second, so the #17 may well get traded down to the later first round or early second regardless.

Let Light walk, move Vollmer to LT, draft an RT at 28/33/60

What do you think about making Light a Guard? It seems that it would minimize his weakness, leck of edge mobility.

I feel like Light would rather get paid as an LT somewhere else rather than as a guard here.

He made about 4.5 million this past season. He's on the wrong side of 30 and has had a lot of trouble with speed rushers, I'm not sure he'd get a huge deal elsewhere. I'm thinking that with enough incentives in his contract he might want to stay here.

Anyway, I was curious to hear your thoughts about how Light at Guard would work on the field.

The Patriots graded out as the top OL in football according to CHFF, and Light was the starting LT and i'm pretty sure played every game. It's difficult to see how they have the best OL in football with a bad LT, and the reality is that he's a good if not great LT. I can see moving him either inside or to RT in the future but letting him walk without even knowing what he wants is stupid.

I could be wrong, but I think BB let's Light walk unless Light agrees to a very reasonable contract.

Light up 10 sacks this past season.

Our double TE sets can help a rookie OT next season as far as chipping and delayed releases.

Move Vollmer to the left side and draft a RT.

In my mind, we can get Ziemba in the third round and plug him in immediately at RT and he will start for the next decade. Flat back super strong run blocker. decent feet with the ability to sink his hips. If his arms are as long as his length, he should be able to push speed rushers past the pocket, especially if we draft Kirkpatrick or O Dowd to replace Koppen so Brady can step up in the pocket.

I am not a fan of Costanzo or Solder, but Carmini I could like a lot if he had better feet.

I'm sure it wouldn't be horrible, and there was some talk of moving him to guard back when he was a draft prospect. He seems like he'd be able to handle the pulling required of our guards, but I question whether he has ideal power at the guard position. I also question whether Bill would want to do that, since he seems to value a player's experience at a position, and Light presumably hasn't practiced at guard ever. So basically, I think he's adequate, but I don't think moving him to guard suddenly makes him a better player.

As much as I agree with you regarding Constanzo and Solder. I truly believe Dante is the best offensive line coach in the game. He could probably coach those two up to be effective in our offense.

However, like you, they really don't impress me all that much Moffit,Watkins,Wisniewski Pouncey and Carimi are my binkies I hope get drafted.

Light will probably be signed to a cheap deal and play LG for a couple seasons and then retire. Sebastiono vollmer will play LT...Carimi or someone else will play right T. Carimi being the pick at #17.

First off, Light has been very good for a long time. If he re-signed for 2 more years I would be fine with that. The Pats smust and should address the following issues (in this order) before the draft....

Mankins: Franchise him or re-sign him, either way do not let him walk.
Light: I would be fine with re-signing him to a 2 year deal, if you let him walk then you enter the draft HAVING to draft both a starting guard and a starting left tackle (or RT if you want to move Vollmer over) and don't even think about letting Mankins walk too, cause then their screwed. That is not a position that you want to be in. Every pick you have to use for the O-line, really isn't making this team any better, and is one less impact player that the Pats can take.

Kazcur is coming back, and he is more than servicable as a back-up tackle, it would have?still could be interesting to see what he would do as a guard.
Neal says he is coming back, but I would put him on the "vetran most likely to announce his retirement during training camp" list.
I thought that Connelly played well and he has a spot as a back-up.

I LOVE Moffit (for center or guard), and he can be had maybe even with the first pick in the third round.

Not sold on Costanzo, thought he got pushed around pretty good (at guard) in the Sr. Bowl.

None of the tackles out there are sure fire hits, so the Pats may be better off sticking with Light.

Carmini can be gotten at 28. Get the best stud DE at 17. 33 could be Pouncey. That will help both sides of the lines tremendously. Then we can focus on the RB's, WR's, and CB's in the late second and 3rd rounds.

Agreed.

Sign Light; he is a known commodity and stick with the Patriot Way; draft some developmental guys later and see if you can hit a home run like Vollmer.

The Patriots need to sign Light because they have too many pressing needs; a pass rusher and (gasp I cannot believe I am saying this) a deep threat. They need another CB also.

Either Light or Mankins should be signed otherwise this draft goes in a totally undesirable direction. RTs are a dime a dozen and can be found later in the draft.

I one of them gets signed the Patriots can go with 3-4 end, 3-4 OLB, OT, WR with four of the first five picks and come out loaded for bear.
