OT: how the Steelers were built

One thing that jumps out at me is the number of players that they re-acquired, either via trade or free agency. Perhaps there really is something to be said about knowing a scheme and specific players fitting a scheme after all.

But the real question is why do the Steelers not get the same scrutiny for their 2006 draft that the Patriots repeatedly do for their own 2007 draft?

They haven't missed on a 1st round pick in 7 years (9 years if you count Kendell Simmons contributions). That's very tough for any team to do.

The thing I admire about them and a reason why they rarely flop with 1st round picks is that they aren't afraid to draft guys in the 1st round who won't see the field right away and take their time with them. Take Lawrence Timmons for example, they used a 1st rounder on him and took 2 years to develop him where he was ready to replace Foote immediately at the start of his 3rd season. Ziggy Hood is another example of this only he had to play a year early because of Aaron Smith's injury.

This was the first year they re-acquired players after letting them go. In the past they never did that. They re-sign their core guys and let the others go if those players want too much money. This year they got good deals for Foote, Randle El and McFadden to come back.

Regarding the 2006 draft, they got Santonio Holmes and their starting right guard Willie Colon (on IR this year) out of that draft. Not a great draft but not terrible.

A top tier Right guard and a SB MVP...not terrible at all.
