Thought just crossed my mind: would Pats sign Gholston to minimum contract?

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

He didn't find a role on the Jets because he didn't care. No reason to think he'll change.

Agreed. The Pats just spent a lot of time fixing "Locker Room" issues, starting with TB's memorable remarks after the playoff loss to the Ravens last year and culminating with the trade of Randy Moss. I don't think they'll import another possible problem, especially after losing a second straight playoff game at home.

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

We currently have G Warren playing this year and he has not done much in the past (I Think), but definitely stepped up and exceeded expectations this year for us.
Warren was an NFL starter for 10 years. Thats a world of difference from not even being able to get on the field

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

G. Warren had 3.5 sacks this year. That would be 3.5 more then Gholston has in his career.

Heck, Dane Fletcher, let alone Gary Guyton, has done more in his career than Gholston has. . . .

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

We could use another reciever and running back too. Terry Glen and Maurice Clarrett both went to Ohio State. I would put them right up there with Gholston.

Terry Glenn had an 11 year career with 44 TDs and almost 9k receiving yards. Hes a doofus but had a productive NFL career.

On the flip side, one of the Pats' best linebackers ever, one Mike Vrabel, also went to The Ohio State University, so let's not write OSU off completely.

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

I might be wrong but my impression is:

If there are 2 defensive systems that can bring the best out of a player, they are with the Steelers and Jets/Ravens (Rex Ryan).
Our system seems to not "fit" players that may excel in the other systems - AD being the best example. BB's system requires more patience, is more difficult to grasp, and does not seem to lend itself well to certain types of players that rely mostly on their athletic ability. Gholston seems to be closer to AD in this regard.

I definitely think he has a psychiatric issue.

I'd be on board with writing them off completely.

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

The Jets tried to utilize this guy every way possible and he was still a monumental bust. Why would the Pats want him?

Surprisingly, he is arguably one of the biggest busts in NFL history, but because of being in the JaMarcus Russell draft people forget how big of a bust he truly is. Ironically, Mike Mamula will probably be remembered in history as a bigger bust, but he was at least an average player with 209 tackles and 31.5 sacks for his career (he had two years where he had 8 or more sacks). He just was a bust based on where he was drafted. Gholston has 31.5 sacks to go to catch up to Mamula.

I was on record as being heavily against even considering drafting Gholston, and I am a huge Buckeye fan. Gholston got by in college by being strong enough to get away with poor technique. He was the text book example of a guy who's game would not translate to the higher level of competition.
Unfortunately for him, he has done nothing to adapt and become a better player. I expected a very slow transition. A nonexistent transition also indicated there is a work ethic problem as well.

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

For good or bad, can you see them signing Gholston to minimum and seeing what they can do with him? Smokescreen or not they seemed high on him during the draft, and its not like he is high risk with money down. Just a thought regarding someone that is not a superstar or immediate starter, but might be a surprise.

I beat you to the speculation in the "Jets Suck" thread - thinking Gholston probably doesn't warrant his own thread, but speculating as to how sweet it would be to see BB add a further FU to Mangini and Tannenbaum both after spooking them to waste the pick in the first place

But really, Gholston's showed nothing, was inactive in all the Jets playoff appearances and I have to doubt that he can turn things around in what's probably going to be a shortened training camp to carve out a roster spot on a team like the Patriots that has few roster spots to begin with

It wasn't an indictment against Glenn, or OSU. Rather, Gholston is an official BUSTand we would be just as well off getting a retired Glenn or a never-was Clarett as getting the potentially great sack artest Gholston (ok, a little stretching).

And how would you feel about the Pats bringing in Kirk Cousins next year? ;)

Re: Thought just crossed my mind

I say bring him into camp, see what he can do (or if he can back up why he was zero sacks) and keep/cut him in september :) nothing really lost, but possible of a big gain :)

Considering how even Rex Ryan couldn't turn him into a player, I don't think he'll ever become a serviceable starter.

belichick would be drunk if he did this. i personally hope the patriots do as a jets fan, but it wont happen.

i think gholston is a bigger bust than jamarcuss russell. i think gholston has made 1 play in his entire career, and it was a tackle for a loss of 1 yard.(im not even confident he did it though. could of been a dream)

atleast russell has made a play in his life(yeah its easier i suppose for a QB to make a play, but atleast russell has done something to win a game.)
