Dolphins looking to trade down

There seem to be a large number of people advocating the Patriots trade up in the draft this year, due in part to having so many early picks at their disposal. Apparently there is at least one team looking to trade down - the Miami Dolphins.

It's also interesting to note that the writer says the reason the Dolphins want to do this is "because second-round prospects are viewed as the best value picks in the draft", though I'm not sure whether or not that is true for this year's draft. I mean if it is that simple, then why would anybody trade away a second round pick?

The Miami Dolphins presently don’t have a second-round pick in the 2011 draft because the trade they made to acquire Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall last offseason, which cost a second-round pick in 2010 and 2011.

But if General Manager Jeff Ireland has his way the Dolphins intend to regain that second-round pick on draft day because second-round prospects are viewed as the best value picks in the draft.

That means expect the Dolphins to be players in the trade-down category of NFL draft. The Dolphins are annually one of the more active traders during the draft process.

Last year this regime traded the No. 12 pick to San Diego, moving down to No. 28 (where Miami selected defensive end Jared Odrick) to acquire the second-rounder used on linebacker Koa Misi. Veteran linebacker Tim Dobbins was also thrown into the deal.

“You don’t have it right now, but like you’ve seen in the past, there’s ways to get it back,” Ireland said. “We’re always looking to try to do that. As of right now we don’t have one, but who knows, on gameday, draft day we’ll have one.”

He traded down from 7 to 10 for Mayo. Last trade up was technically trading 229 and 231 for 208 to select Thomas Welch. Last worthwhile trade up was from 44 to 42 to snipe Gronk from the Ravens.

They traded down for Mayo, but they traded up for Ty Warren, Graham, Wilfork, Chad Jackson, Brace, Gronkowski, and I'm sure a bunch of others that I'm forgetting about. The Pats definitely have a track record of trading up when they feel that the situation warrants it.

Given where they are picking (15), I don't see the Patriots giving up a 2nd just to go up 2 spots, so it would have to be the #15 for the #28. It would take 390 points to even that up. New England's second pick in round 2 would be worth an even 300 points. New England's 3rd rounders are worth 220 and 132, and the 4th rounder is worth 48, so I don't see the Patriots being thrilled giving up either third.

That leaves the question of whether you'd trade the Patriots second first rounder, second second rounder and fourth rounder to move up from 28 to 15.

In 3 of the past 4 years, the Dolphins have had multiple #2s. Too bad they ended up burning those extra picks on mediocre QBs.

2007 - 2nd round - John Beck
2008 - 2nd round - Chad Henne
2009 - 2nd round - Pat White

Still, there is a lot of value when you hit in the 2nd round. It's amazing Kyle Wilson's rookie contract will exceed Gronk, Cunningham and Spikes combined.

Traded down for Mayo. 7 to 10, I think. Traded up for Graham (bottom to 21?). Always trades up or down then up a few spots for guys, Warren, Light, Bethel, Geno?

He will only trade up for a player he wants, a unique player, but definitely would IMO for a monster DE. The proverbial 300 pounder that can move.

I doubt he'd trade up for an OLB/DE unless he felt the player was a McGinest/L. Taylor. Too much of a bust factor, and you can add RB and WR to that group.

Lots of players can run and catch the ball with a Tom Brady. Doesn't mean he wouldn't draft if the value was there, but I doubt he'd ever chase players at those positions.

He is not fluid enough to drop in coverage. I am not advocating we do not get him but if we do he will more of clay mathew than someone who can drop in coverage.

I actually see value in a trade up as top 15 picks can be signed for 5 yrs so even if you throw in a midround pick we get the player for 1 more year.

Dropping into coverage is just about the last thing I'm concerned about in an OLBs skillset.
