I've seen it written here before that Floyd Reese is not involved with the draft, clear evidence that he is:

Ian R. Rapoport (RapSheet) on Twitter

The #Patriots staff may be on the way to Hawaii, but senior football adviser Floyd Reese is in Mobile scouting @SeniorBowl

Maybe Reese is just subbing for BB this one time since BB is tied up with the ProBowl? Doesn't make it an ongoing thing. Not really enough evidence to conclude, "AHA! SEE?! Reese has always been involved in draft scouting!!"

I mean, if that's where you were going with this.

Think Reis mentioned one time that Floyd would be doing contracts and people took that as gospel like Reiss has some sort of inside info on what the Patriots front office is doing.

I'm on the side of thinking Belichick might lean on a guy with over 30 years of NFL service and a draft record that includes 3 rookies of the year. But hey if Reiss say a guy who was a receiver coach 3 years ago is doing all the draft work then that's what it is I guess.

Here's to hoping Floyd throws up another softball for Bill to smash it put of the park. This team will be loaded with a great draft.

Did Reese's arrival correspond with the Patriots last two excellent drafts? I seem to remember that it did; something positive has happened recently and it might be him.

Reese was hired on January 27, 2009, a few months prior to the 2009 draft. So yes, his arrival did correspond with the last two drafts. Not sure how much credit goes to him, but it's clear we've been doing much better in the draft compared to the 2006-2008 period since he got here.

Reese had an excellant draft record with the Oilers.

The credit for the last two years drafts should go to Nick Caserio, the Director of Player Personnel, the same position Pioli held. Reese is an advisor, not saying he has no input but it's Caserio's job.

The fact that the 2006-2008 draft classes overall were pretty weak relative to 209-10 also corresponds. Correlation does not equal causation no matter how much it may appear to serve to sharpen one's axe.

Although I believe Nick Caserio organizes most of the groundwork for the draft, the system remains the same and BB does make the final decisions on draft day. It is how well BB and Caserio work together that deserves the credit.

I agree 100%. Not suggesting Floyd is the reason for the turnaround, just that things have been good. Even if he's just a good luck charm, lets keep him around a bit ;)

By the same token, I'd never insist that Floyd has made NO contribution to the draft effort. The reality, I think, is probably closer to it being something of a committee effort with a lot of different people doing at least some prospect evaluation here and there, a few doing collating and coordinating and several making recommendations. BB probably has the final authority, but that doesn't mean he exercises it as an authoritarian.

My feeling is that Floyd may offer some good information/insight about what other teams may be competing directly with the Pats for certain prospects. That kind of thing might help BB feel comfortable, for instance, making two trades down - but not a third - before taking McCourty.

That sounds right to me. Without being behind the scenes, I don't know for certain, but things have gone very well with Floyd and Caserio around, and I'm sure both deserve some credit.

And after seeing Josh's disastrous decisions in Denver, I can't help but blame him for some part of those awful drafts between 2006-2008. Fair or unfair, he seems to be the common link between a lot of bad personnel decisions.

Let's hope he doesn't leave the organization.

From Dec 28th Boston Globe article:
Reese a candidate? The NFL Network reported that Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese is a candidate for the 49ers’ general manager position. The 49ers fired coach Mike Singletary late Sunday night and are looking for an experienced GM, although current vice president of player personnel Trent Baalke will be considered as well. Reese spent 13 years as the Houston/Tennessee GM from 1994-2006; he joined the Patriots in 2009.

Good point about McDaniels probably contributing. OTOH, you have to allow for the possibility that the Pats traded for Moss and Welker at least partly on his recommendation as well.

That's true as well. But the Moss deal was really a low-risk move for only a 4th.

Actually, looking back, it seems kind of crazy that we gave a 4th for a future HOF guy, but a 2nd and a 7th for Welker, a guy who had never caught more than 70 passes or had 700 receiving yards in a season, and only 1 TD at the time.

Taken together, a 2nd, a 4th and a 7th for what we've gotten out of those two (not to mention getting a 3rd back) had to be the deal of the century.
