Do we CUT BAIT with Butler?

I know this topic may be premature. But I recently read a thread in the draft subforum that suggested that Sean Payton and the Saints were interested in Darius Butler in the context of trading Pierre Thomas. Now hear me out, if we could get a 3rd round pick this year from the Saints or some other team for Butler, would you make that trade? Butler has all the physical tools but just has not learned to look back for the ball and properly cover the WR so as not to allow the play. Thoughts?

If Sean Payton is interested in him, I think it's time to reevaluate him. Payton is a great judge of talent.

It depends on what was offered. I think the Pats asked for a 3rd in addition to Pierre Thomas and the Saints balked. In addition this might have been in response to Jenkins or one of the Saints CBs going down. So there are a few factors to consider when evaluating Butler's worth and what we could get in return for him.

No, we'd need to draft or sign somebody new for the slot corner/#4 CB. I think Butler is decent in that role.

other the Tate and he's 2 TD's on KR's this year i cant remember a 3rd round pick ever doing anything for the pats in the BB era so i say no if he gets a pass rush he will be better

Butler has all of the physical tools he needs to be an elite corner in this league, he just needs to get it all together, in a reduced role such as nickle corner i feel like he could thrive, but it certainly isn't worth giving up on him just because of a bad year.

With Bodden coming back, Arrington having starter experience and Mccourty being as good as he is i dont know why you are so worried about butler. even if he doesn't develop right away it isn't like he would significantly impact the team one way or another.

With 6 in the first 3 rd's I think there is plenty.

you can expect alot of those picks to be traded for future picks or used to move up and down the draft, the patriots have the ammunition this year to draft almost any player within reason, they probably wont trade into the top 5 though.

overall, i see the patriots coming away with 4-5 players in the first 5 rounds and then a heap of next draft picks for 2012, maybe some practice squad projects in rounds 6 and 7.

No, we do not cut butler hes already sighned for the next two years hes young,fast,and talented although will never be a good starter he will be a great backup and deff a nickle and dime stud unless we trade up and grab patrick peterson theres no need to even draft a corner we have 3 very guys and bodden. I personally think we sign a decent vet like Drayton Florence, or Rodrick Hood. personally would love to sign richard marshall.....

Whenever a draft pick doesn't excel in his first few seasons, we want to get rid of him. Sometimes kids need time to develop.

Asante didn't do much in his first year, developed a bit of a role in his second, and became a starter in his third, but his break-out season was year 4. This is a similar pattern to Jabari Greer, who didn't contribute much until year 4, but developed into a top-tier corner. Tramon Williams is another guy who didn't get drafted, got into camp with the Texans but got cut, signed with GB, did nothing for 2 years, then developed into one of the best corners in the league.

Butler may end up being a bust, I won't deny it. But we can't keep giving up on guys after one or two years.

Give him two more years to see how things go. He regressed at the start of this past season, but improved when he got opportunities as the season wore on. That's a big positive in my books.

Was I imagining things or was Butler improving as the year went on? I know we all expected him to be the #2 and it was a disappointment that he did not rise to that role but I thought his play at the end of the year was becoming solid.

There are certainly others here that are better at evaluating play then I am but I would not call him a bust if he stays at the level he is at and becomes our #3 or #4 CB. I might not break the bank to keep him here when he is a free agent but he is a solid role player IMHO.

You are equating getting playing time as improving. IN a way when you play it is an improvement.

Whilite played and got himself the slot position. WHen he went down the pats were forced to use chung there who effectiveness went down as he lost this matchup more than he won. SO butler saw more action. Kyle arrington got dinged up and then you suddenly saw alot of butler.

I see the same next year with return of bodden and whilite. Whilite is a smaller shifter corner and plays the slot guys really well. He will take the slot and bodden /kyle /Devin are your outside guys.This year kyle/Devin where dynamic in run support ,look at the jets game every one was worried about holmes and guess what kyle played him more.Till he got dinged up even though some teams where throwing away from devin kyle was very effective.

I agree. Butler plays like a *meows*

Where are these "physical tools"? He doesn't jam. He's always trailing receivers, he gets beat deep. He offers nothing in the return game, which was something he was supposed to be good at coming out of college.

Wilhite is better in the slot, and Arrington was better outside. If someone wants to trade for him, I'm all for it.
