We no longer have the attitude players on the D.

Belicheck has outlived our rodney Harrison's Vrabels and McGinests and replaced

With just do your job no emotion mantra.

This is a contact and attitude sport.

Oh I miss our D from early 2000's.

I hope he let's the reins loose next year some.

I think you're confusing "attitude" with quality of play.

Mayo is clearly becoming a leader, every year he gets more physical and vocal. Those players didn't just wake up one day and say "I think I am going to be a leader today" They grew into them with hard work, coaching and belief in themselves.

Patrick Chung to initiative this year, and although it didn't always work out in his favor, thats the first step to becoming a leader. You act as if leaders come in over night, next year will be even better in terms of players being leaders.

I'm sorry, but when you said "Hire a young DC to groom for HC" you lost me. BB has many good years left in him, i'm pretty sure BB has goals of his own, he would not still be playing if he didn't.

I'm with you ;)

This draft has to be all about defense. I agree we have lost our defensive swagger long ago. We need to get back to basics and defense wins championships. The young D needs a pass rush badly. First rounders this year should be pass rushing D lineman and pass rushing OLB. This will go a long way toward making this team feared again on the defensive side.

What's with all these new posters being all "doom and gloom". I swear this is the third thread I've seen today saying that BB/Brady is declining in talent.

Nice to see this. I felt like the odd-man-out seeing all the rah-rah for highest scoring D. Montana had Charles Haley, Favre had the minister of defense Reggie White.

lol that new poster has been here since '05. Anyway, I don't really Disagree with the op, I would like to see sustained emotion like Brady in Pittsburgh or BB during the 45-3 game. There was none of that the last two home playoff games and its pretty disheartening.

I agree about the lack of attitude (but not about replacing BB):
My favorite players in sports have always been guys who are good character guys off the field, but on the field become vocal, mean, intense, and are also at the top of their game.

Examples: Cam Neely, Rodney Harrison.
The 01-04 Pats had a few guys on D who fit the bill. This team really doesn't (other than Wilfork). I think having a few of those guys drives the rest of the team to step up in big games.

The Jets & Ravens have a few that met the vocal/mean/intense. But they aren't good character guys off the field -- they're idiots / a-holes. So I'd actually prefer them not be on the Pats as I dont like rooting for a-holes.

Whoops, my bad :D. I only saw post count. I apologize to the OP.

I like the thought of lack of attitude, but I think it has nothing to do with bringing in a new coach or player. The team can win and that was shown by the fact they had the best record in football. The team just had no sense of urgency until the last two minutes of the Jets game, and then they just smoked right through the D. It's known that younger players in the NFL don't appreciate getting to the playoffs or superbowl until they've lost one, and some of the veterans already have a ring among a bunch of other accomplishments. We need some players on this team that want to win a ring more than the other players on the other side of the field.

Not getting into semantics here. Attitude or talent. Bottom line is playmakers. We just don't have enough of those guys. Vince is about the only one. All the young guys and rookies are great to talk about, but did they do their best on the most important game of the season? Did Cunningham register any pressure? much less sack. Did McCourty have his best game? Playing "OK" is not enough for play off.

Great team doesn't have to be great (or to blow out teams) all the time. They just have to be great when it counts (when they have to be).

I agree. The lack of emotion was notable between the December 6 game where Brady in particular was all fired up and last weeks game where there was little emotion. Hard to understand but team will rebound very effectively.

Woulda shoulda coulda, but in hindsight, might it have been a better move to turn over the D to Dom Capers this year (provided he would have taken the DC job here) and let him put his stamp on the D, while Belichick concentrated more on helping BOB with the offense?

Seriously, people manufacture problems for this team. There is plenty of attitude on this team. Just because we don't have guys like Harrison who let the media in on it anymore, doesn't mean it isn't there. There were plenty of times this year where you can see the players showing attitude on the field and getting very chippy with the other team.

You got a younfg defense and that means the problem is execution and experience, not attitude.
