Just starting to get my thoughts together on the draft based on some players that I've seen in college games during the year. This early list is based on guys who might be around when the Patriots draft IMO.

Tear it apart if you want or Box will take a huge dump in it as usual.:D

1st round

Ryan Kerrigan OLB Purdue. Purdue DE's have a history of converting to OLB in the 3-4 and Kerrigan may be one of the best.

Cam Heyward- Look a OSU DE is due to make it in the NFL and he might be that guy.

Gabe Carmini OT Wisc- maybe to tall to play OG but could be the solid LT/RT of the future

Aldon Smith OLB Mo. could be a beast

2nd round
Mike Pouncey OG Fla
Jon Baldwin WR, Pitt
Jeremy Beal, OLB OK
Stephan Winsnieski, C/OG PSU
Mark Hezlich OLB BC- mixed feeling but he could be a very good Patriots player

3rd round
Ben Ijalana, Vill
Sam Ocho, OLB Tx
Stephan Schilling, OG Mich
John Clay RB Wisc, I have him rated higher than most as they see another Ron Dayne. I see someone who could be another Brandon Jacobs.

Be gentle:cool:

My early "4" is not very exciting but for now I like :

1a) Stefan Wisniewski (sorry Dan)
1b) Mike Pouncey (Neal is done)
2a) Jeremy Beal (one of these days we'll get some pass rush)
2b) Jarvis Jenkins

That's a little conservative on what could be available, both the 1a and 2a picks might be slight reaches that we could trade down a little and still get. I like PATSNUTme's first round list but I'm not sure any will make it to #17. I wish Beal and Jenkins were slightly taller but these four are all talents, all good workers and all Seniors who played 4 years in college.

A center at 17?! Wisniewski isn't that completely dominant player. He's a solid player who will have a nice career, but those guys last until the late 1st.

We do have a 2nd first rounder. We have 7 of the 1st 100 unless the Huddle Report is wrong.

As I said, I would envision probably trading down a little to the mid 20s in this case :

I could be talked out of these, it's still very early. But we need a DE, OLB, OL.

I could be talked into a WR depending on how they feel about Price and Tate, a Safety depending on long term plans for Meriweather or a CB depending on the prognosis for Bodden's return.

I wouldn't be against taking Mark Ingram at #17 or Mikel Leshoure at #28. BJGE is good, but he's not a guy other teams fear and have to gameplan for. If we could add a gamebreaking RB, that'd just be a whole other dimension to the offense opposing defenses have to gameplan for.

With that said, I think we go offensive line or defensive line/OLB position early. In the 1st I'm expecting at least one of the following:
Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin, OT
Nate Solder, Colorado, OT
Derek Sherrod, Miss St, OT
Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue, DE/OLB
JJ Watt, Wisconsin, DE
Cameron Heyward, OSU, DE/OLB
Cameron Jordan, Cal, DE/OLB

I really would not be surprised if we go CB in either of the first two rounds either.

Cross Watt off. He has Ben Watson's agent, and the Pats refuse to work with him.

I could go for one of the tackles depending on Light. I like all the defensive guys better than my 1a pick but at this time I expect them to be gone when we pick. In a perfect world I'd love to get someone like Heyward in addition to Jenkins and Beal. Then cut off the defense and we would still have almost a full draft (2,3,3,4,5, and whatever late picks we have) to spend on offense.

Wow, thinking of that it's nuts.

Heyward
Pouncey
Beal
Jenkins

and still having a 2 and two 3s to get another interior lineman, rotational RB and WR. Not bad :)

Just to be clear, Watson is currently represented by Drew Rosenhaus. Watson was originally repped by Tom Condon (Watt's agent) during his rookie holdout. Watson fired Condon and hired Pat Dye who quickly got the deal done. Anyway, the Pats don't appear to have a problem working with Rosenhaus who also reps Gronkowski.

Wondering if it's just Condon that the Pats have bad blood with or if that extends to other CAA-Sports agents - e.g., Ben Dogra.

The Pats may also have issues with Eugene Parker (Seymour's agent).

I haven't found any listing of what 2011 prospects are represented by which agencies, but it's early yet.

Having looked at a bunch of mock drafts last night, I realize I was wrong in assuming all the DE will be gone. When the Raiders' pick ended up at #17 I moved on from that but I looked at a variety and realized there's a good chance one of the Camerons (Heyward or Jordan) could still be there; Heyward seemingly more likely.

I am not spending much time looking at the Kerrigans or Smiths because Belichick just seems adverse to taking such a dramatic position changer that high - although there's a first time for everything. Both Camerons are great fits as they are projected as 3-4 DE and they're also Seniors who have played a ton at major conferences which is important though not definitive to our #1 picks in the past. Heyward is said to have inconsistent effort but so was Seymour back in the 2001 draft.

Honestly what makes this tough is having so many picks. We know we need a DE and normally we could focus on that but with so many picks it's tough to know where we take one. 1a is fine but there's also guys like Wilkerson we could get at 1b or 2a and Jenkins we could probably get at 2b. With guys like that and Beals at OLB I'm trying to forget about position and just hoping a really good player drops down even if it's not a position of need because we can still fill our needs with the surplus of picks. If the guy we think is the next great Safety, CB, OT or RB is there then I'd take him and we could still get Wilkerson, Beals and Jenkins to finish off the Front Seven if needed.

All that said, Cameron Heyward is a great fit if the effort question are answered. Bloodlines, major conference, Senior, played 4 years, team captain.

Another guy for a little later would be Christian Ballard, another potential 3-4 DE with perfect size, Belichick will get a good report on him from Ferentz.

Aldon Smith OLB Mo. could be a beast
1st Round

Ryan Kerrigan - Hell Yes!
Cam Heyward - No frickin' way I want that lazy arse
Gabe Carimi - Late first round/Early second round (#28/#33)
Aldon Smith - Should have stayed in school

2nd round
Mike Pouncey OG Fla
Jon Baldwin WR, Pitt
Jeremy Beal, OLB OK
Stephan Winsnieski, C/OG PSU
Mark Hezlich OLB BC- mixed feeling but he could be a very good Patriots player
2nd Round

Mike Pouncey - Hell Yes!
Jon Baldwin - No
Jeremy Beal - Hell Yes!
Stephen Wisniewski - Hell Yes!
Mark Herzlich - Too small for Patriots 3-4 OLB position

3rd round
Ben Ijalana, Vill
Sam Ocho, OLB Tx
Stephan Schilling, OG Mich
John Clay RB Wisc, I have him rated higher than most as they see another Ron Dayne. I see someone who could be another Brandon Jacobs.

Be gentle:cool:
3rd Round

Ben Ijalana - Maybe
Sam Acho - Hell Yes
Stephen Schilling - Yes
John Clay - Nope 5th/6th Round Grade

I'm down on Baldwin too. I bet a lot of teams will be. He looked pretty stiff out there for Pitt this year. if he had come out last year, he might have been a 1st rounder.

Heyward is said to have inconsistent effort but so was Seymour back in the 2001 draft.
Stay away from Cameron Heyward as far as possible. Bill Belichick will not put up with his work ethic.

Actually I'm banking on Belichick finally drafting an impact 3-4 outside linebacker with either the #17 or #28 overall pick. Whether it is a Ryan Kerrigan at #17 or a Justin Houston at #28, Bill Belichick needs to stop looking for the next Lawrence Taylor and just take the best 3-4 outside linebacker available. I'm can't take the likes of Tully Banta-Cain and Eric Moore anymore!

I'm hoping too but, honestly, I've given up. If he surprises us, great, but other than casually looking at the likes of Kerrigan, I look elsewhere in my draft preparation. Forget about "Fool Me Twice", I would be up to about "Fool Me Six Times" if I actually thought Belichick would take a pass rushing OLB in the first round every year we've needed one.

1st round

Ryan Kerrigan OLB Purdue. Too slow

Cam Heyward- OK

Gabe Carmini OT Wisc- OK

Aldon Smith OLB Mo. Great

2nd round
Mike Pouncey OG Fla - OK
Jon Baldwin WR, Pitt - Never happen
Jeremy Beal, OLB - OK
Stephan Winsnieski, C/OG PSU - OK
Mark Hezlich OLB BC- Never happen

3rd round
Ben Ijalana, Vill - I'd like BB to take a small college player
Sam Ocho, OLB Tx - OK
Stephan Schilling, OG Mich - OK
John Clay RB Wisc - Never happen head case

Be gentle:cool:[/QUOTE]

I'd like to see:

17 Nate Solder T Colorado
28 Cameron Jordan DE California
33 Aaron Williams CB Texas - trade Butler
60 Rahim Moore FS UCLA - trade Meriweather
74 Benjamin Ijalana G Villanova
90 Thomas Keiser OLB Stanford - a reach
124 Steven Friday OLB Virginia Tech
158 Colin Kaepernick QB Nevada - really think this kid could develop
183 Anthony Sherman FB Connecticut - a sleeper

If the NFL player lockout continues past the 2011 NFL Draft, the following mock draft for the New England Patriots covers most of the roster contingencies except for Logan Mankins:

#17 Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB Purdue or Justin Houston, DE/OLB Georgia
#28 Gabe Carimi, OT Wisconsin
#33 Mike Pouncey, OG Florida or Stefen Wisniewski, C/OG Penn State
#60 Jarvis Jenkins, DT Clemson
#74 Rahim Moore, FS UCLA or DeMarco Murray, RB Oklahoma or Shane Vereen, RB California
#92 Sam Acho, DE/OLB Texas or Stephen Schilling, OG Michigan
#124 Clint Boling, OG Georgia or Stevan Ridley, RB LSU
