Parcell told Jets to hire Fat Boy Ryan

Thanks a lot Bill! Now we have to listen to Big Mouth for years to come. I would be highly agitated if I were Dolphin's ownership. You want to weaken your enemies, not strengthen them!

As great of a coach he was, he really is an unscrupulous SOB.

Completely inappropriate.

"Blimp Nepotism"? :D

Actually it's tampering if Miami wanted to make something of it...given Tannenbaum placed a direct call to another competitors GM asking for advice and the egomaniac on the other end now wants us all to know that... Not that Goodell would make it an easy case to enforce against since as usual it's the JETS doing the tampering...

I doubt he "told" them like he had any clout in the decision. He may have said he wouldn't of been a bad choice, but unless they were paying him money to help them hire their next coach, his opinion didn't mean much.

It's a gray area. But at the end of the day, out of respect to his current employer Tuna should have politely told Tannenbaum that it would have been inappropriate to recommend or suggest any specific HC candidates. I know those two go back a ways but still....

With that said, you are right. It happens. Owners will call other owners and ask for their assesment or even get a recommendation on a particular coordinator that they are thinking of hiring. I'm sure Pat Bowlen reached out to Kraft or BB re: JMcD.

In fact, it would not surprise me in the least of Kraft had a conversation with Art Modell to get a little more G2 on what exactly happened in Cleveland as it pertains to BB. Who knows though.

But within your own division?? C'mon...

Are you sure this would be considered tampering?

Not saying you are wrong, only that if your right this would be kinda abig deal.

Everyone recommends others in this field. BB recommended Harbaugh for the ravens over rex, a reason rex is ticked off as BB .

so!!! is that an issue.

If you recall there was quite a little stink several weeks ago when the owner of the 49ers said he was going to call Tuna for advice on his next FO/HC move. That idea was squelched pdq because he can't do that as long as the advisor in question is under contract to another franchise who best interest is supposed to be his sole focus. Now, we all know they all have relationships and talk backchannel, players and agents do as well, and it's not technically legal then either just difficult to prove. But we're not even talking casual conversation in passing here. We're talking about a division rival GM CALLING a counterpart for advice and getting it. Miami should be berserk, particularly if what Tuna said is true and he opted to have them go with his guy from Dallas even though he thought Rex was a more viable candidate. Thing with Tuna is, you didn't hear him spilling these beans after the 2008 season or when Rex was throwing in the towel late in the 2009 season. Tuna is an egotistical attention whore. He reminds me of Favre. If anyone picks up eithers option going forward they are beyond idiots.

I'm not sure you understand what tampering is.

No he didn't. What he did was proactively provide an employment reference for a former collegue as I'm sure he does for lots of guys he can't give a particular position to. On the other hand had Baltimore called him and asked him to recommend Rex or Harbaugh and Bill advised them to take one over the other, that would be what Tanny and Tuna did. Baltimore had already determined on their own while he was on their staff that Rex didn't fit their profile for a HC and had passed him over.

I'm sure I have read about owners and GMs calling each other for their thoughts and advice on what direction to go, a potential GM, head coach, assistant coach, etc. That includes calls that Kraft and Belichick have both made and received. In other words this type of thing is not unusual.

What is unique about this situation though is that it involves a division rival. I don't know if I've heard of that being done before. It's one thing for somebody from say New Orleans or Green Bay for example to talk to the Patriots; it's another to give advice to help out someone within your division.
