More Edelman next year?

One of the things Brady said earlier this season was that they had to do a better job working Edelman into the offense.

Part of the problem is that most of the time, they used either Welker or Edelman, but not both, and it's hard to get into a rhythm when you're only getting 5-10 scattered snaps, and maybe one throw, a game.

No, he's not going to be a replacement for Welker, nor will he be a true deep threat, but I don't see why they can't get him on the field more. He certainly has enough speed and more than enough agility to do a lot of damage. [Remember his first pre-season game? 6 of 6 catching, and 5 of those 6 passes went for first downs.]

I remember the playoff loss to the Ravens, we where so many points down, Edelman caught pass about 6 yards short of the first down along the sideline, he juked somebody, pushed ray lewis back about 2 yards and the forced his way for the first down, thats enough for me, tough kid, deserves the time.

That was one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. It was 4th down, so he knew he had to keep fighting for it, and somehow got it.

There was a penalty, holding I think, and the play got wiped out anyways. But that play showed an unreal amount of determination and fight.

Hopefully he's on the field more next season.

I think we need a big possession type receiver. Enough with the small finesse type receivers that can be checked at the LOS and be thrown off their game.

I thought Gronk/Hernandez would fill that need, but Gronk stayed in to block more often than not.

I think we need a possession type receiver that can fight through traffic and catch contested balls. Yes, Larry Fitz, but that is a pipe dream.

Yea and the next play he caught the 1st down didn't he? I've been trying to find a replay of that, if anyone can find a link that'd be great.

Whether or not you add one of those doesn't change the fact that Edelman should get more snaps. As others noted (e.g., the Ratbirds play where he converted a 4-and-7 and then, after the penalty, 4-and-17), he's a tough runner, and deceptively strong for his size.

I thought Gronk/Hernandez would fill that need, but Gronk stayed in to block more often than not.

Not sure if that's a question of need or game design, so to speak. Certainly GRONK can be that possession receiver; they just need to get him downfield more.

I think he deserves a bit more. He plays hungry and looked to be one of the few players REALLY trying their hearts out on Sunday.

I do agree that we need a bigger downfield threat, preferably one who is not a selfish prima-donna. I think it might be time to use a more valuable pick on a WR, enough with the roll-the-dice players ... PK Sam's, Tate's, etc.

Edelman and Welker both fill the same role of slot reciever, they arent fast enough to get down and stretch the field like randy moss used to do.

Welker has more experience and has great chemistry with brady which is why he saw more snaps, edelman i suspect was looking like he would see more time but the emergence of the tight ends really put him on the bench.

The Problem with this team is they have too many of the same guy. mid field possession receivers, if you look at how the jets beat the patriots, they forced alot of the receivers into the middle of the field and clogged it up with alot of linebackers and defensive backs, revis and cromartie were good enough that they only needed 1 safety behind them, Branch got destroyed by Revis and Welker also seemed to be taken out of his game.

The way i see it, in order to beat the jets, the patriots need to do a better job of running the ball and blocking, because the jets didnt really blitz, screen passes were pointless, but outside runs by woodhead were fairly effective.

The Patriots need to be able to run the ball through the middle, with all of the DBs the Jets played and as often as they dropped back the patriots should have had more success running the ball but they didnt want to put the game into the hands of their RBs, having success running the ball was the only thing that was going to change the jets coverage, and although the patriots had been balanced all year, they collapsed at the first sign of adversity.

Try to trade Welker and some picks for Calvin J. Put Edelman in the slot. Makes economic sense. Use the rest of our picks for the OL and Defense and maybe Ingram if he falls. Get Ocho if he agrees to shut up.

How about going after Steve Smith (Car)? or is he physically losing it?

It is hard to tell with the complete state of suckage that the Panthers were in this year, but I have always been intrigued with his play on the field, punching his own players...not so much.

Calvin's $$$- 2011: $10,450,482, 2012: $12,424,518, 2013: F/A

Edelman has not proven himself to be a reliable pass-catcher.

No question Calvin is a top 3 WR how does this make economic sense again?
