Read 'em and weep. I know many of you refuse to read him for obvious reasons, but nothing smarmy from Borges today. Just the ugly facts. This game was lost before the kickoff because the teams strength (offense) was not put in a position to win. Epic coaching failure set the offense up to fail. They were prepped for man and faced a day of increasingly disciplined deception via zone similar to what Manning faced the previous week... I saw Rap tweet yesterday afternoon that after watching 4.5 hours of tape Borges had reported that the WR were not getting open due to a combination of bumps and chips disrupting timing compounded by ensuing miscalculation as to what coverage they were actually facing (kudos to the JETS D for maintaining disguise discipline even post snap while mixing it up continually).

And while the defense played well in spurts early on, what they increasingly failed to do was make the big stop or stop the big gain play or get any significant pressure on Sanchez at critical junctures. Of course they were increasingly set up to fail field position wise by the offense and ST. That a fake punt option is even in play on your own 38 down 4 with a minute to go until you receive the opening kick of the second half is just situationally mindboggling. In a manner of speaking it was a snapshot of the entire failed effort.

Players individually certainly failed to execute albeit in fairly limited opportunities. But this was a true top to bottom system failure since overcoming a week of game plan preparation that was wildly off the mark would have taken one hell of an unscripted, impromptu, virtuoso performance by multiple players which is not this teams forte by design.

Let me get the obligatory "I hate Ron Borges" out of the way. He probably creamed his pants writing this article.

And there's no way the running backs were a "C-." In fact, give the coaches a big fat "F" for not using them (particularly BJGE) when they were running the ball rather effectively.

Although the Jets slowed down our offense, without certain lapses by players and coaches (Brady awful pick, Crumpler drop, moronic fake punt attempt) this game could have gone very differently. Easily could have been 10-7 in our favor going into half and getting the ball, possibly 14-7. Fact is that we didn't come prepared, Jets did great to knock us off our game, we made 3 huge mistakes that cost us points, but we were still in position to get within a score late and maybe win this game. Poor gameplan AND execution.

I don't understand the Pats' failure to adjust to what the Green Beans were doing defensively. If someone can explain this I'd appreciate it.

I agree. I mean it was clear that the Jets were playing tight man on the outside, and then a tight zone over the middle. To me that would be perfect for a quick slant over the middle, Welkers strength.

The issue to me was Brady was not getting much time to throw even with a 3 man rush or Brady not being able to find guys open down the field. Brady was under pressure and he just didn't seem comfortable in the pocket. Even when he had time he couldnt find any open WRs and held the ball way too long and the pocket would finally collapse. Brady struggles with pressure that comes from the middle, he has problems moving to his left or right. When the pressure comes from the outside Brady can step up in the pocket, which was a strength of his.

Yes, I think the Jets game made it clear that maybe having BJGE and Woodhead as your primary running backs is not the best approach. I rank RB as one of our top 5, maybe even 3 of the off season.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with 2004 Corey Dillon. I'd take that type of back in a heartbeat. 4.7 ypc is nothing to sneeze at.

Dillon was great for one season, no doubt about that. But I'd like to see them land someone young enough to have four or five years as a legit threat.

Before we get too far into revisionist history, and we know Borges is the best at spinning a tale of half truths, how about what actually happened in the first two series.

These were the series where we were totally unprepared for Ryan's defense and completely failed to run for a balanced attack, right?

I'd like to be that outplayed by a defense every series, minus the mistakes. I'd also like to play with the 10-14 points we should have had. Not trying to change what happened, but we moved the ball at will and we screwed up, turning a big advantage into a confidence builder for the Jets D and allowing them to run in a close game and force our depleted line defense to play run and give mediocre Sanchez some opportunities.

Dillon was great for one season, no doubt about that. But I'd like to see them land someone young enough to have four or five years as a legit threat.

Agree 100%, Tune. I see what you are saying now.

As TB creeps into his mid-30s, I do believe that the team needs to invest in a RB that can share the responsibility of moving the chains and keeping defenses honest.

Not sure they need to spend a top pick on one but if one can be extracted via a trade or a diamond in the rough can be picked in the 3rd or later rounds, great.

With that said, I think BJGE still has room for improvement. But it's clear that hes not someone you game plan against. From an ability standpoint, hes not that type of runner. Nor will he be that type of runner in this offense.

Sadly, the guy who was arrested in St. Louis the other day was supposed to be that...only for multiple reasons it never really worked.

Then again there were guys like you said the OL could not run block as the reason why Maroney sucked but I guess BJGE suddenly was behind an OL who changed dramatically once he was put in as the main guy

No BJGE is not more talented but he has all the traits that you love to see in a player such as great work ethic, eager to listen and learn, always looking for ways to improve.

Fact of the matter last weekend is that both he and Woodhead were doing an excellent job but inexplicably after the first two drives which were successful from a moving the ball standpoint we went to the air more often.

Law Firm is tough and has a lot of heart, but he isn't getting any better than what he already is -- a serviceable workhorse type of back. He simply is a change-up to the passing game. We need someone that teams fear and will have to game-plan against, and we need road-grader blockers to go along with him. Too much of this offense is on Brady's shoulders.

Not saying BJGE will evolve into a 1300yd rusher, but he seemed to get better once he got past the LoS. Might be a comfort thing or they did a better job of downfield blocking. Hes an outstanding backup to a thoroughbred RB.

It's a 60 minute game Ray as their HC preached all season. Doesn't matter what you did in the first two series, let alone after you didn't finish those either. The JETS were a little taken aback by what they were seeing early. Then they adjusted, and they stuck to their guns for 60 minutes while we seemed to become increasingly flumoxed and less effective in all three phases of the game. Simultaneously we didn't play complimentary football. In fact we played the opposite with one aspect undercutting the others efforts at every turn. We didn't even play sound situational football which is generally a hallmark of Bill's teams. Players acknowledged that they were not prepared for what the JETS defense presented them with after a bye week to be prepared for anything...let alone unprepared for a game plan the JETS fairly telegraphed thanks to their win at Indy and their loose lipped personnel. A defense that played them well in bump and run man reverted to soft zone and got picked apart on increasingly shorter fields. They opted to stop the run and put the ball in Sanchez hands, then allowed him to post a 127% passer rating... By the time it was over fundamental execution was a distant memory. We played so poorly they could get away with a couple of mistakes. That's a total top to bottom failure and those are virtually impossible for any team to overcome - as was the case for the JETS in our previous meeting.

There is nothing left to do when that happens but move on and learn from your mistakes. The JETS did that while there was still time. We unfortunately will have to wait an entire off season - and in fact into another post season - to prove we can. This team certainly has the ammo to get better, what we need to see is if ammo is what it will take or if there is something else amiss.

This OL can't run block well absent superior blocking TE's. And for some reason they can't consistently pass block all that well either in the post season...
