A more interesting "Draft Brady's replacement" scenario

So there's been a little bit of chatter here about drafting Brady's replacement. I personally think its at least 2 years too early to be thinking that way. That being said, i thought of a very interesting(albeit far-fetched) scenario.

What would YOU do if the following chips were to fall.....

Pats trade a pick(either 17, 28 or 33) to a team for that team's First next year(and maybe a little more draft filler...a 3rd or 4th in 2011).

That team finishes in DEAD LAST next season, landing us the #1 pick in the 2012 draft, along with our own.

Andrew Luck, who would have been the overwhelmingly unanimous #1 QB had he decided to come out this year, is available to us. The draft is more than likely cost controlled now with a new CBA and probably a draft slotting system. Do you Take Luck as your next franchise QB?

Normally i'd be against taking a QB with Brady having some good years left, BUT, from what i've read it seems that LUCK will be the real deal and it wouldn't hurt(Besides maybe his feelings, being selected #1 and being a backup for a couple seasons) to take a potential superstar QB. Thoughts?

IF there were a rookie scale, and the cost were reasonable, I'd consider it.

OTOH, in that scenario, there would be enough teams clamoring for Luck that the Patriots would probably make a killing.

I would be SO torn in this scenario. All the future draft picks in the world may NEVER again turn into a #1 overall pick. Also, if Luck is as good and as NFL ready as advertised, he may be the next Brady/Manning for the 10-15 years he plays. I also agree, however, that we could make a killing in draft picks(which i love). It would be a very difficult choice for me, but i think i would lean towards taking Luck.

Basically, its a LONG LONG LONGSHOT, but this is the ONLY way i take a QB in the next 2-3 years.

I don't want Luck, while he seems to have plenty of physical tools I have a feeling that he'll be a bit of a headcase.

Even though I wouldn't go in that direction, I think it's a terrific notion, and a refreshing idea.

I simply don't see any reason to ever Draft a QB on Day 1 or Day 2: I believe that the best Field Generals tend to be guys who've undergone a lot of adversity, usually culminating in a Day 3 Grade. Furthermore, it seems to me that having a Rocket Arm actually infringes upon the development of all those little things that end up making the difference in winning Championships: Fanatical Attention to Detail, Relentless Drilling, and an Unwavering Focus on Using The Whole Pig.

If it were up to me, I'd parlay that Pick several times, starting with an upgrade on the Eli Manning Trade, for, say, #4, #68, and the next year's 1st and 3rd.

By the time we finished, we could rake up an OCEAN of High Caliber Draft Picks!!

Better, yet: We could control who gets Andrew Luck.

6 or 7 more years is what I expect out of General Tom Brady, possibly less if we pull off the Three Peat which I've been predicting, so, yes, I would have additional reason not to invest an early Pick in his replacement. I'd rather see us continue to spend lightly on guys like Greg McElRoy, with the intention of trading them as they mature for much more than we invested, with the understanding that, eventually, one of them will be his replacement.

But if my philosophy was anything other than what it is, I would jump all over your idea, for I believe that Andrew Luck ~ in sharp contrast to my expectations for most of the top QB's, this year ~ is going to be special.

I LOVE this response! Great thinking too. If YOUR scenario were to be available(Controlling where LUCK goes, the eli manning-like trade etc) then i think i would lean in that direction. Either way it would be a win-win.

No, certain nuances seemed to indicate that he plays football to keep his father's approval, not because he loves it, but I could simply be reading into things.

I still wouldnt want to pay that high a price for him, I'd much rather keep looking for diamonds in the rough like Brady.
