Wendell, Lockett, Richard extended - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

The Patriots recently extended the contracts of offensive lineman Ryan Wendell, defensive lineman Darryl Richard, and safety Bret Lockett, according to NFLPA documents.

All three players were scheduled to become exclusive-rights free agents following this season, and all received one-year extensions in the amount of the minimum tender each player could have received.

Wendell had previously signed a two-year deal after being promoted to the active roster for the final week of the 2009 regular season. His one-year extension will pay him a base salary of $480,000, the 2011 minimum salary for a player with two credited seasons.

Richard signed a one-year deal with the team after spending the 2009 season on the practice squad. He will be paid a base salary of $330,000 in 2011, the minimum for a player with no credited seasons.

Lockett, who like Richard spent the 2010 season on injured reserve, signed his one-year exclusive-rights tender on July 20, and was re-signed at a base salary of $405,000, the minimum for a player with one credited season.

The only remaining player scheduled to be an exclusive-rights free agent is cornerback Kyle Arrington. The Patriots will have until the eve of the free agent signing period to offer a one-year contract to Arrington at a minimum base salary of $480,000. This date will likely be determined only when a new CBA is reached. If Arrington is tendered, his only option will be to re-sign with the Patriots.

Patriots re-sign 7 from practice squad - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

The Patriots on Monday re-signed seven players who ended the season on their practice squad.

Tight end Carson Butler, quarterback Jonathan Crompton, wide receiver Buddy Farnham, defensive lineman Marlon Favorite, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins, cornerback Thad Turner, and safety Ross Ventrone all signed reserve/future deals and will join the team when rosters expand to 80 players later this offseason.

Yet to be officially re-signed from the practice squad are offensive linemen Thomas Austin and Steve Maneri. It is likely both players will reach agreements to return later this week.

Seven PS players re-signed to futures deals, plus two more that are going to do the same. That's nine players, but the PS consists of eight players; what am I overlooking?

Next up... Mankins, Green-Ellis, and Light.

IMO, once Kraft starts commenting on things such as contracts things usually go one way or the other. Moss- gone. Wilfork- signed. Brady- signed, etc.

Kraft's greatest strength is getting a deal done. I would not be surprised that Kraft got involved w/ the the Mankins situation and worked out some kind of gentleman's agreement that a deal would be consummated once this CBA stuff got worked out.

I could certainly be wrong, but I hope I am not!!

Agreed on Light and BJGE. Light has a couple of years left and I think it still pretty good. BJGE is a fine runner. Hes not elite but any runner that gets 1000 yds and 10+ TDs is pretty good IMO.

and Warren and Page.

I can see them letting Warren go. He's not that good against the run and was sporadic against the pass this year. He really doesn't give us anything that Pyror and Wright can't give us.

Warren may or may not be a starter. He may or may not make the team. But I would certainly re-sign him. I think that he is certainly more valuable than Pryor as a utility backup. wright may or may not ever play again.

Re-signing Warren is inexpensive insurance. We don't know how ready our new additions will be.

And considering the possibility of an expanded roster, it seems quite possible that Belichick will choose to carry an additional defesnive lineman.

Thanks, for some reason I wasn't thinking about PS players on IR.

Here is - to the best of my knowledge; please correct me if I'm wrong - a current list of players on the Pats roster with contracts expiring this season that will be free agents March 1. All are unrestricted free agents unless noted otherwise.

Kyle Arrington - Exclusive Rights Free Agent
Thomas Austin - (practice squad)
Josh Barrett - Restricted Free Agent
Kevin Faulk
BenJarvus Green-Ellis - Restricted Free Agent
Shayne Graham
Matt Light
Steve Maneri - (practice squad)
Logan Mankins
Brandon McGowan
Sammy Morris
Quinn Ojinnaka
Jarrod Page
Fred Taylor
Gerard Warren
Tracy White

I've seen Landon Cohen, Matt Katula and Marques Murrell reportedly having contracts expire in 2010 in one place (Rotoworld), and 2011 elsewhere (espnBoston) so I'm not 100% sure on their status but I'm more inclined to believe Rodak and Reiss.

If Wright ends his career (which he very well could), I would sign Warren to the minimum contract and load it with incentives. If Wright comes back, I would let Warren ride into the sunset.

I'll leave the contract and cap management to Casserio. He will spend what he needs to.

The following are must signs, IMO: Arrington, Faulk, BJGE, Katula, Light, Mankins, McGowan, and White. Sorry to Fragile Freddy, but he hasn't been useful to us lately. Let him go to another team to finish off his career and draft a RB.

Really? I thought you would leave it up to me. :bricks:

McGowan is not a must-sign. He started off great last year and then got picked on regularly once teams discovered that he was horrible in pass defense.

Page is a better player.

Page and McGowan are both nearly the same player. If you think that Page is good in coverage, I'm not sure why. McGowan is the better of the two. I think a lot of people forget about the way he shut Dallas Clark down in '09. With that said, I wouldn't mind re-signing Page either, but I don't consider it a "must sign".

and Warren and Page.
Gerard Warren will turn 33 years of age next season and the New England Patriots have a Gerard Warren clone in Ron Brace. The New England Patriots need 3-4 defensive ends (5 technique defensive lineman) who can rush the passer not overweight defensive lineman who are on the wrong side of 30.

Patriots Defensive Lineman

Ty Warren
Vince Wilfork
Mike Wright
Ron Brace
Myron Pryor
Brandon Deaderick
Kyle Love/Darryl Richard/Kade Weston

I think Page has better balls skills. More INTs. Better upside. Bigger too.

I do recall what he did with Clark. I also remember him taking bad angles on pass coverage.
