FYI, those numbers above were by the San Francisco 49ers from 1985-1987. Joe Montana and crew won their next seven straight playoff games and Super Bowls the following two years.

Obviously that has no bearing on what the Patriots will or will not do in the 2011 or 2012 season. Just a little perspective for those that are opining that Belichick has lost it, the Pats would be better off without Brady, the coordinators should be fired, the entire roster should be blown up, let's sign every available free agent, and all the other doom and gloom comments that have taken over this site in the last 20 hours.

Get a grip folks and back off from the ledge. Some folks here would be better served to say nothing at all than to spout their ridiculous knee jerk reactions.

Couldn't agree more man. A lot of people here are overreacting. We should be optimistic sure I understand the disappointment in the team but we should trust our team and our HC we'll be okay besides with the draft coming up we can stock on both sides of the ball. Particular for me we need a pass rusher and a legit WR that can be our vertical threat cause the Jets took away the middle of the field yesterday

Great post. I saw that Florio took a hatchet to Brady about three straight losses. I would have thought he'd at least mentioned Montana. In terms of Brady and Belichick's legacy, often times it's how you finish. I'd love to see Brady go into the sunset with a final Lombardi trophy.

Ridiculous to think of a Super Bowl loss by 3 points as some kind of failure.

It's a two straight loss thing.

The team is very young, and they haven't ratcheted up the intensity in the playoffs.

2 is a trend, I guess, but compare the youth to the past Patriots' teams. Come on, a world of difference.

Merriweather, Chung, Sanders, McCourty, Butler, Arrington, Mayo, Guyton, Spikes, Cunningham, Warren, Love, etc.

Good post... Makes for a encouraging read... However, like you said it has no bearing on the next season... If there's something the last two post season defeats have taught us, its that past is no indicator to the future...

That young thing is a BS excuse!!!!This team looked lethargic at home!!!Last night's game was on the QB and the offense execution.Yes they got pressure on Brady but he hung on to the ball a long time.

The time has come to find a REAL GM for this team. BB is going on sixty and believes he can be the entire coaching staff and front office without any help. I think Caserio or Reese need to be given the GM title so Belichick can shift all of his energy into COACHING and getting his teams ready for the playoffs.

The young thing isn't BS. They held the Jet's offense to 3 freaking points a month ago. Granted the offense put up 45 but they took away the middle of the field the Jets had a great plan on D seeing that we didn't have anyone that could go deep. They gave Sanchez all day to throw he never got hurried or hit once throughout the game. The times Sanchez was hesitant he overthrew or underthrew the ball no pressure whatsoever on Sanchez yesterday. It was a bad game on both D and O .

While it has been 3 straight playoff losses, it has been 6 postseasons since we won the SB; 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.

The 49ers won the SB in 1984 and won it again in 1988 & 1989. If we followed in their footsteps we would have won it in 2008 & 2009 and we all know that didn't happen. As it is we are now looking at 2011 and Brady will be 34. And as someone posted in another thread Montana, Bradshaw & Aikman won all their championships by the time they were 33, 31 & 29 respectively.

Time is passing us by, the window is closing and once again we've let another PRIME opportunity slip through our fingers. How many more do we get? I thought THIS year was the make up year for recent debacles. So much for that.

What did Bruschi look like in his second year? Any ideas? Vrabel was a fringe player for heaven's sake. McGinest was like Shawn Crable.

09 was Brady's first year back from major knee surgery, it was Moss's twilight year and our defense was brutal. That was the "end" year. Going to the playoffs was nice, 1 and done hurt, but wasn't a "huge" suprise.
This year was our "rebuilding" or "bridge" year, tons of young/new players on both sides of the ball, a complete restructuring of our offensive and defensive schemes. Many were hopeful of a wildcard slot, but really weren't going to go all in until they saw how our rookies caught on. 14-2 was an unimagined bonus which made us forget how young our team really is. 1 and done sucks because we gave up the cautious optimism we had early in the season for full blown homer-vision two thirds through the season. Now we got burned because of it.
However, nothing has changed for 2011. 2011 is still the beginning of our new dynasty. Prior to the 2010 season, I think most people looking forward to 2011 at that time thought that the Patriots had one of the hugest upsides in the NFL. Lots of rookies this year with a ton of potential, players coming back from IR, lots of high draft picks, plus key veterans remaining and a much easier schedule. Now that we've seen what this years' rookies can do, I think our 2011 optimism is very well placed and I don't think we should let a one and done to a very experienced, pretty dang good Jets team who knows us well, stop us from being crazy excited for next year (barring a lockout).
Don't get me wrong, I feel empty inside and spent a good 3 hours in the fetal position last night crying and eating peanut butter straight from the 5lb tub I bought it in, but in my hindbrain there is a little light on that is keeping my sanity in check.
That light is 2011.

Again, how long have you been watching the Patriots?

Did you not see the offense get stuffed before?

In our Super Bowl years, they got stuffed against the Raiders, the Steelers, the Rams, the Titans, the Chargers.

The offense has been stuffed before, and they won the game. You need both sides to be world beaters in this league. The defense in the old days was full of tough veterans.

The Jets offense operated at a much higher level than they did against the freakin' Colts. The COLTS!!!

I am 99% certain that you will be proven wrong about the youth of this defense. Good defenders get better. It's axiomatic. Sure, Meriweather may be Tebucky Jones, but Jerod Mayo is going to be every bit as good as Bruschi--if not better. McCourty isn't Ty Law yet but he will be. Cunningham, Spikes, the list goes on.

This is similar to 96 in one way; young defense. That year, Ty Law (McCourty) and Bruschi (hopefully we get someone like him in the draft) were rookies, Willie (Mayo, possibly) was a third year.

That's an excellent point, good job on the research.

The more I've been thinking about it today (and I HAVE been thinking about this ALL DAY ), we just made some uncharacteristic stupid mistakes or that game could've gone just like a lot of our regular season games went. Yeah the Jets slowed our offense down considerably, but IMO we still would have grinded out a close win without the INT/fake punt/Crumpler drop.
