Great piece. The pick and then not taking it to the house on the next drive but settling for a FG gave the Jets the hope they needed. As a layman, I don't understand why they couldn't adapt and pick up the three and four man rushes, but I'm sure someone will explain that to me.

And, yeah, I'll bet the locker room is a depressing place today.

Teddy said it reminded him of SB42. Like I said, I'm willing to bet that's exactly what happened to Brady on the field. Very similar game plan. With the added intent of opening the old wounds through all of the trash talk.

Brady needs to see a sports psychologist before the next season. He needs to be over SB42 and this before he takes the field again.

I would point out, Moss should get more of a pass for his mental breakdown post-SB42 now that you see how Tom fared yesterday.

It has nothing to do with sports psychology. It has to do with offensive philosophy. Our bread and butter is read and react. Every once in a while we come up against a team that can disguise well enough to counter that. As long as they remain disciplined (and provided a few players step up as never before...) it's a cat and mouse game that we just cannot win absent a shutdown defense.

Fred was just talking about what Brady could or should have done to counter that defense. Dictate on offense (via spreads and motions and cadence and snap counts) rather than spend all day waiting/trying to diagnose a defense nickle or dime D that isn't revealing itself and is just getting a jump off the line because you are constantly snapping with 1-2 seconds left on the clock.

Branch made the comment last night that they were late making adjustments but that once they were made the players didn't execute. Brady said that they were not expecting all the zone coverage they got. End of the day those two scenarios are an overall failure of coaching because it's their job to prepare players for all situations (and the Indy game a week ago featured much the same situation).

Bottom line there is as usual lots of blame to go around. It was basically a system failure across the board...offense, defense (who played well with the exception of giving up a handful of very costly plays) and special teams which didn't perform well before you even factor in the botched fake punt call.

Great article for the grown ups. Yes, even a team that got beat 45-3 can gain confidence with a good game plan and execute well enough to beat almost anyone.

We've been on the other end and gained that confidence and got plenty of breaks. We'll be competitive next year and Brady is still the best QB in the game IMO.

1. Closer look at Jets' plan on defense. The question many are asking is what the Jets did to stop the Patriots' offense. They didn't bring the house. A lot of the time, they brought only three or four rushers, but the question was which three or four. At the beginning of the game, when it was a four-man look -- whether it was man or zone -- the fourth rusher lined up at the defensive end position and was a defensive back, Marquice Cole.

So you had a situation in which an offensive tackle, Sebastian Vollmer, was blocking a small defensive back. That was the Jets daring the Patriots to run the ball. When the Patriots did run it, they did it successfully. The Jets were willing to bite that bullet.

I'm convinced at this point that the patriots did little to no planning on the offensive side. I figured out what the Jets gameplan was going to be and that we should come out with a running attack like we did against the Chargers in 07 and I definitely don't have the knowledge of a pro-football coach or coordinator.

As for the SB42 comparison, all the talking leading up to this game has all-along reminded me of the Giants, even if I didn't want to jinx us by saying it.

Although the Jets sounded very confident last week with their words, the element of doubt was still there. Talking trash can be a great way to hide the feeling of doubt. For the Patriots, it was vital for them to get off to a good start to validate the doubt the Jets might have had in their minds. A first-possession touchdown not only would have gotten the Jets thinking but would have reminded them of the 45-3 loss on Dec. 6. Also, the young Patriots team needed that fast start for their own confidence; when they started fast all year, they were never stopped.

Bingo Tedy. We needed to come out like a first seed team, remind those green mouths just who they'll be dealing with all day, and never let them forget it. PLUS you amp up the crowd even more, they'd have gone absolutely insane and the Jets would've had a very tough time quieting them down.

Godhelpme after reading this I have to say Footsie really did his homework. Awesome analysis by Tedy, I love how he not only addresses the x's and o's but the hearts and minds as well.

I wish Tedy was still around in some capacity, I don't really care what capacity, I just think he brings so much insight. He's dead on too- some of the plays made by the Jets didn't result in anything but one by one they sure deflated our sails. He's right about our D too- they've played their best when they get off to a fast start.

It's fairly obvious why Bruschi was as great a football player as he was. The man simply knows football.
