...at the worst time. All season, the Pats had gotten by with clever gameplans, overachieving, safe ball control, and an opportunistic defense. The sky is not falling, but it was just another huge, missed opportunity, especially with Manning and Brees eliminated.

Anyway, first let's stop the overreacting. The primary reason the Pats lost was the Jets played a near-perfect game. Not really sure the Pats would have won even if they'd cut down on their mistakes. It probably would have come down to fourth quarter. The Jets had virtually zero penalties, made some incredible plays all over the field, and basically won every individual matchup. This was very reminiscent of the second half of game 1 at NY. The Jets were built to win now and they did. The Pats were not supposed to win now (or at least that's what we believed just three months ago) and they didn't.

Anyway, there were obviously some major errors that made this game lopsided. Brady's INT, Crumpler's drop, Chung's gaffe, etc., but let's face it, we were flat out outplayed, and that's why we point to a few mistakes which could have been less scrutinized had we played well.

Here are the areas which have been problematic all season, but which have been pretty much ignored because we kept winning. Let's remember that other parts of the game today were just bad decisions or bad situations to be playing from. They are fixable, but these areas need improvement.

1. Let's remember that the old dynasty was built up front. Seymour. Warren. Wilfork. First round picks. Yes, the Pats had some injuries on the d-line, but this unit is not where it must be. Good isn't good enough. Not sure if Warren will come back to his elite level, but however they need to fix the problem, this is clearly the biggest problem with this team. Having an elite front three was the reason the Pats used have incredible defenses. Belichick can play chess with the best of them when you can pressure the QB with three lineman and get to play around with safeties and linebackers. When the front 3 is average at best, and you play against an o-line like the Jets, you can either let the QB pick you apart, or you can blitz and play single coverage. Obviously, the Seymour trade has hurt us big time, and let's hope that defensive line is the first position addressed in the draft. We need a stud here. And for those who are grumbling about needing an OLB, having a formidable line will make players like Cunningham better, and also make our already fast secondary into a much better unit. It starts up front.

2. All season we kind of wondered how an offense could be so dominant without a true vertical threat. Although Tate was decent for a first-year player (injury last year), one wondered how this team could consistently dominate without a burner. We found out today that an athletic defense can shut down a short, quick passing game. As much as I hate to say it, especially using this term, the Patriots could not "stretch the field." That is why you almost never saw 1 on 1 matchups. The Jets leaked out this week that they wanted to "funnel the Patriots into the middle of the field." Since the Patriots had no way to establish the deep game and take a corner and safety away from the scrum, they were basically led into a giant cluttered area were quickness was neutralized. Hats off to the Jets. Brady apparently did not have any answer for this defense.

3. The loss of Gostowski was actually pretty big. Graham did an admirable job doing what he could. The terribly short kickoffs were a big problem all season, but especially against some special teams aces on the Jets. Field position killed the Pats all day. Let's hope that Gostowski makes a full recovery this offseason; when healthy, he is extremely valuable to this team and enables the special teams unit to play stellar. Against elite defenses, field position is huge.

Amen. It wasn't an accident that the Patriots gave Gostkowski the largest-ever non-Raiders ST contract

The DL was missing 4 of its top 7 to injury. Part of the fixing will happen automatically, but I still think we see a first round DE.

I still think the TEs should've found a way to make plays. Hernandez was a nonfactor, which makes me think he was still hurt or something. There were plays to be made to the outside, but they weren't made. Branch had a few passes his way that could/should have been caught.

Gostkowski should be back at full strength for next season. Thank goodness.

I didn't realize how depleted our front 7 was until today. I know how we were built but there is no doubt we were missing some key personal up front.

Not having S Gostowski back there hurt on kickoffs the most. Evidently we've havent been a team built on FG's but his range on kickoffs was irreplaceable. Basically there was no kickoff return, he kicked it pretty deep..

For the 50th time we will be back next season to kick some butte. Gostowski,Bodden Warren,Wright. A tone of picks. Yes, we will be back.

I agree Ice, especially about rebuilding up front on the defensive line. We really miss Big Sey's presence and the ability to get a pass rush with a front three. Sanchez had all day to throw Sunday.

I also think it might be prudent to also address the offensive line. Resigning Mankins is a priority, as well as drafting potential future replacements for Light, and/or Koppen and Connolly (the latter if Neal retires and Kaczur struggles to return to form following a season-ending back injury).

The depleted D-line did enough today to win the game. They got gashed for sure on more than a few runs, but they came up with enough 3rd down stops to hold down the fort.

On the other side, the offense went 3-and-out more times than I care to remember. That killed the defense as the game went on.

A lot of people jump all over the fact that we don't have a great OLB, but even with Demarcus Ware our team would still be getting gashed pretty bad till we get some new DEs. It's just so pivotal to the 3-4, especially when 2 gapping.

Really need Brace to take a big leap in year three and Ty to come back strong. However, I am hoping they add depth by taking a "5 technique" end with one of their high draft picks.

No doubt.

And back to the OP, if you thought these flaws were just exposed today then you've been listening to Pete Sheppard too much. This team has been riding high on turnovers all year, and not too much really solid defense. The Packers game is a perfect example, they pull out that pick six and huge return to win the game, but if Arod was in there I'm pretty sure we would have gotten smoked. This team has a hell of a lot of flaws, more than some other playoff teams. They were just overcoming them for a while, but the little voice in my head that us not playing during the bye week would make us come out flat was true.

Bottom line is Brady sucked, he had all day to throw on many occasions and never found anyone, he locked in to targets, the Q1 pick was an awful decision

He just had a very bad night, not sure why

the receivers themselves were also not getting open.. Branch was shut down by Revis, welker seemed checked out, and why the **** did we not use the rookie tight ends more often?

Brady just seemed out of it.. i think with all those blitzes, the thought of another injury might have crossed his mind several times.

Ultiamtely we had a good season but the way we were playing ball all year could have led to a game like this. Depending on turnovers is a perilous existence because sooner or later you go behind early in a game and the offence isn't forced to throw. The execution it takes to not turn the ball over on offense consistently is much harder than we think, especially without a deep threat. To be able to do that pretty much all the way through the season was amazing

The game turned on a few plays.

1. Brady's pick and Alge's drop. We were moving the ball at will in the first and 2nd drives. If we had managed to score a TD on either of these drives and gone up 10-0, then the game is completely different. It takes the Jets out of their ball control offence and we might have forced a few turnovers.

2. The fake punt. I wasn't in favour of the call, it smacked of a little desperation that things weren't going our way and it ultiamtely cost us 7 points. The Jets hadn't really showed they could drive the filed on us up to that point and to give up certain points if it failed was too big a risk.

3.Deion's drop on 4th and 13. This was really indicative of Brady's night. The timing seemed to be off with his receivers all night. He seemed slightly rattled by the rush. The amount of times he just threw the ball into the ground, away or just behind a receiver was amazing. Now I credit some good downfield coverage by the Jets but I seem to remeber Tate being wide open on one 3rd down and Brady refusing to throw it. It was like he didn't trust him and had to look for Gronk or Wes. The fact that it got to 4th and 13 was stupid as well. We should have called an easy dump off on 3rd down or a run to get into field goal range. Leaving yourselves in that position was criminal in a two score game. We effectivelt wiped 8 minutes off the clock with nothing to show for it.

4. The 50 yard catch and run by Cotchery. This was a back breaker. Having just got the momentum back, if we could have just found a stop we might have scraped a win, but someone missed a tackle and it pretty much wrapped up the game for the Jets.

Overall, it seemed like we were competent stopping the run most of the time but we never forced Sanchez into 3rd and long situations. It was run on 1st down for 4 yards, run on 2nd down for 3 yards and then they threw a quick slant for 5 yards to pick up the 1st down. So infuriating. We couldn't get any pressure as Sanchez only ever had to do 3 step drops.

The other area I feel we really struggled was special teams. We seemed to start every drive from inside the 20 where as the Jets had consistently good returns.

It was just a game that fell in the Jets favour early and we couldn't find our rhythm until it was too late. A really disappointing end to what was a great season.

Biggest flaw of all?
When you punch the Patriots in the mouth they don't punch you back.
When that changes then their playoff fortunes will improve.
This team lacks mental toughness.

They physical we finess.

Freaking TRUTH.

It was noticeable that the days of the Patriots responding with physical threats of violence on the football field when you disrespect them off it are long gone. The new age Patriots are the nice guys who like to smother you with kisses and hugs until you suffocate.. the dynasty Patriots bashed your face in, kicked you on the floor then threw a can at your dog to make sure you knew your place.

We need angry angry men with chips on their shoulders playing for the Patriots.

Also, your pass rush is awful even with blitzing it was all picked up. Sanchez was hit once and that was the fat@$$ wilfork taking a cheap shot.

The OP answered that question if you read it...the WRS were not open. Why in the world do you think Brady was holding the ball for?..guys were not open..simple.

Biggest flaw today was the coaching..

The offensive game plan stunk, completely unimaginative and no significant adjustments were made.. running on 1st down consistently is predictable.

In the 3rd quarter why did they go into a 7+ minute drive, with no points.. there did not seem to be any sense of urgency..

Why didn't they make O line adjustments, Brady was getting killed..

Why didn't they go hurryup more often..

Throw in a few stupid penalties and this is what happened..

On the other side they exploited or D backs and McCourty did not play as well as he normally does.. combined with shytty tackling it was a perfect storm.

The saddest part of that drive which really pissed me off was when the patriots had Gronkowski stay in to block with a FOUR man rush!

Guess what? He had noone to block, he just looked confused on the play. The end result was an incomplete pass.

Hey BOB, you don't think Gronk running vertical up the middle would have help instead of blocking AIR!!!
