It better be a trench player, OL or DL. We sucked in the trenches today.

I agree. need to do something with the left side of the offensive line...hopefully can bring Mankins back... Koppen needs to go and Light is the million dollar question do you sign him to a one or two year deal or bring in a rookie to protect brady's blindside?

Before you b****, remember this was the Patriots' Week 1 roster at DL (presumably, either Deaderick or Love loses his spot to a healthy Ty Warren):

* 97 Ron Brace DE
* 71 Brandon Deaderick DE R
* 74 Kyle Love NT UR
* 91 Myron Pryor NT
* 92 Gerard Warren DE
* 75 Vince Wilfork NT
* 99 Mike Wright DE/NT

Here was the roster for today's game:

* 66 Landon Cohen DL
* 71 Brandon Deaderick DE R [suspended bye week]
* 74 Kyle Love NT UR
* 92 Gerard Warren DE
* 75 Vince Wilfork NT

Not exactly the same, is it?

Wright and Brace were doing well this year. Warren (G) had some flashes but couldn't collapse the pocket. I may get flamed for this but I would not mind bringing back Seymour

This, this game really makes you go back and look at what we have going into next season and where we could use improvements.

Ok, what about the offensive line? We could use another guy in there.

No complaints there. Assuming there is FA, I'm not sure which route—draft or FA—would be preferable, but definitely need some new blood on the OL.

I dont think the OL was all that bad today. Most of the sacks were a result of good coverage down field and not poor blocking. You cant keep a rusher blocked forever and most of those sacks were Brady holding onto the ball too long. I do think the OL can be upgraded but I dont think we should overreact. Vollmer is set at RT and I think Light has 2 more good years in him at LT. I think the Pats would be best of franchising and trading Mankins because in the long run I dont think he will be worth what he is asking. He is a great run blocker, but he is only average in pass protection, so I think we can get good value for him in a trade, draft a solid replacement and not downgrade the OL too much in the short term. Connolly is solid and I would be fine with him starting in 2011, but more depth is necessary.

OL is definitely a need but with the way this draft is structured I wouldnt be spending high picks on it. We should be able to get good value in rounds 3 and 4 and maybe look for a future LT next year in a stronger OL draft.

Does the OL need to give Brady 20 seconds? Brady had all day to pass. Revis and Cromartie covered our wideouts one on one all game. The jets had no trouble bottling up the middle. No one was opne, no matter how long Brady had to pass.

The DL also played reasonably well. They will get Brace and Warren back next year, and they do need an addition. The special teams was giving the jest a short field with the fake punts and onside kicks.

In general, the defense did fine, certainly well enough to win with a solid showing by the offense.

It is clear that you watched a different game than I did.

The game was won by the defensive backs of the jets. It is really that simple.

I've been saying for weeks in this draft forum that #17,26? and 33 need to be players that make a living in the trenches.......

BTW: do we now know what are 1st rounder will be now?

Pats pick 28th in each round

I just googled it... We have #17, #28, #33 and #60........

Make em count BB and Nick!

i'd like to see a db, a d lineman and a rush linebacker acquired in the offseason. draft or free agency, i don't care.

Regardless where these guys come from (draft, FA, IR-returnees, current roster development), this is what I think we need to fill:

On defense:
- a long, strong, gap-controlling, run-stopping 3-4DE who can consistently push the LT back into the QB's lap (to play opposite Ty Warren)
- a maniac interior D-line sub-rusher for 40 front packages who's not a liability in run defense (mainly to replace Wright; I have a feeling he's not coming back)
- a #3 option at CB who's much better than Arrington/Butler/Wilhite
- at least one OLB who can consistently set the edge/tackle, get after the QB and who isn't a liability in coverage

On offense:
- more strength, agility in the middle of the O-line
- two WRs with the quicks/agility to effectively run all the routes and who are legit threats to go deep any time
- one durable, between-the-tackles RB who's a legit threat to break off 25+ yarders at least a couple times per game (and who can catch)
- a really, really good blocking FB who can consistently help get the RBs through the 2nd level (and who can catch)

Nothing here has really changed for me based on the season result, much less the playoff loss to the Jets. The offense needs some definite additions, however, no matter how good it gets, even with TFB at the helm, offense alone isn't going to do it anymore. The defense needs to be more solid, front to back, so that it can become more aggressive without surrendering big plays.

IMO Mankins kinda sucked yesterday. He was certainly not the only one who did, but he sure didn't play like a guy who deserves $7-8 mil/year.

I'd put the CB need far lower than you do, and I'm not nearly as sanguine about Mike Wright. I don't know exactly what happened, but I suspect it wasn't "merely" a concussion issue. OTOH, they kept him on the 53-man roster for a very long time considering he wasn't even practicing; right now, I'd say that it's not a given he'll be back, but if I had to bet a few bucks, I'd put the money on his coming back.

I don't know that Edelman/Welker-like agility and Moss-like deep threat capability truly coexist in any receiver.

The Pats only have two RBs under their control for next season (Green-Ellis, scheduled for RFA, and Woodhead), and I can't see Taylor or Morris returning, so new blood is definitely needed. I'd like to see them replaced, as you said, with a RB to complement BJGE, and a fullback.

The offense needs some definite additions, however, no matter how good it gets, even with TFB at the helm, offense alone isn't going to do it anymore. The defense needs to be more solid, front to back, so that it can become more aggressive without surrendering big plays.

Absolutely 100% in agreement here. Some work on both sides of the ball, but definitely not impossible.

Are you serious? Sure the DBs were great for the Jets but we the OL and DL just weren't winning their battles.

On the CB position, I'm not at all advocating spending a 1st/2nd rounder in hopes of getting another McCourty, but maybe a 3rd rounder in hopes of getting another Arrington to displace Butler or Wilhite.

I agree that no one WR is likely ever to embody both extreme skillsets. OTOH, I'm not sure it's impossible to find/develop guys who can run the whole tree with, say, 75% of the effectiveness of Welker/Edelman/Branch on those routes and 75% of the effectiveness of Moss going long. The point being that, with a Moss clone, the defense has a good idea what he's most likely and LEAST likely to do. Same for Welker. The defense then has a good idea of how to distribute their coverage and all that's left is to execute.

However, if you can come up with a guy or two who can run any route reasonably well, especially if they're physical enough to get off the jam consistently, the defense has a lot more guesswork. IOW, we need some generalists to augment our specialists.

Check downs, buble screens, reverses, lots of ways to beat the zone the Jets were in, but instead we try for the fake punt?

Bottom line for as horrible as our offense played yesterday, our team does not possess a dominating defense; we one are not going anywhere.

Pass Rush! Pass Rush! Pass Rush!
