I saw this report live this morning thought this is a huge joke going on in Pitt's locker room and those guys are laughing it up right now after finding a reporter willing run with the bait.


Also, occasionally we hear the color guys on a broadcast tell us about the practice details during the previous week of a trick play afterit has been run in the game.

It's common for coaches or players to disclose game strategy or trick plays beforehand, such as in production meetings with TV producers or the crew calling the game, with the understanding that nothing will come out until after the game or after the play was run or whatever.

What is not common, however, is one such media moron actually going out and blowing the whistle beforehand. ESPN isn't going to fire Holtzman for what he did but, if the above report is true, it's safe to say Holtzman's days of getting inside info are over.

You're right. This stuff does not come up during a production meeting. Where the announce crew DOES get this stuff is by watching the Friday practice. Something they are allowed to do as mandated by the NFL. They are NOT treated like local media who are allowed access to practicing/stretching! During the Friday practice, especially for the home team, you will always see the PXP guy, Color guy, sideline if there is one, producer and director at practice. This is where they pick up on this stuff and as someone pointed earlier....this is when they say the saw it.....AFTER the play is run during the game.

What happened here sounds like Holtzman was talking with some Steeler players who were excited about the play (hunch guess....emmanuel sanders FWIW)....and they told him about it. They screwed up by giving details....and he DOUBLY screwed up by reporting it. He would have been fine to say something like...."Steelers players tell me they have a couple of tricks up their sleve's if they're presented the right opportunities while on offense." that would have been fine....he screwed up and will not get in trouble by ESPN....nor should he...his punishment will be dealing with the steelers again!

Just to add.......

production meetings are usually the same stuff you hear during the week in the press conferences....excepts it's ellaborated with examples....video too. Talking about how bad a team is in 3rd and long....how good a team is on first down...stuff like that is what's said in a production meeting and then added too.

That is really, really dumb. If you get inside info on a team's trick play you need to treat it as confidential information. Saying that the Steelers are excited about a new trick play they have in store for the Ravens is one thing, but then to actually try to describe the play and the personnel involved is a MONUMENTALLY dumb breach of confidentiality. This guy obviously FAILED journalism 101. It really makes me wonder how national mediots get and manage to keep their jobs. With no training at all I could have dealt with it better than this idiot.

Do you mute TV announcers? It happens all the time that the color guy will say after a big play something like "so and so told us before the game that they planned to attack player X in Y way".

I'm not saying every team does it, but I've seen a bunch of times something where, for example, a team runs a trick play and then Phil Simms or Troy Aikman or Dan Deirdorf says "well, we learned a little bit about this play in our meeting with the coach earlier this week, and here's how it was drawn up..." or something like "well the coach told us he was planning an onside kick this week and there it was!" or something to that effect.

As for the point Wiggins made, I'll gladly admit I was using the term "production meeting" incorrectly and I apologize for my poor vernacular. All I meant was a sort of under-the-table talk between the coaches or players and the media covering the game. Could be nothing more than a 3 minute chat between old friends before a walk through or something to that effect.

no worries! wasn't trying to jump at you at all. just wanted to help those understand who don't.


For the overall point....the funny thing is now when you ever hear an announcer "guess" a play....in a certain situation (pick your sport btw)....you wonder if he's guessing blindly....or guessing with some help!

If I'm the Steelers, this is simple. Send a letter to ESPN informing them that their employees and contractors are banned from all Steeler facilities for one year. This includes game broadcasts Then make them go to the league to get me to back down.

I think that they tried to run this play right before Halftime but had to call a timeout since the play clock was too far expired by the time they were in position. Ben was lined up as a WR.
