Personally I rate it as a medium need but it is always an area that can be improved.


There are the usual suspects some that are completely out of reach (Fairley, Dareus, etc.) along with a bunch of others JJ Watt, Bailey, Jordan, Heyward, Cricj, etc.

A new name that I saw is a junior from Illinois.

6'3, 300 <-- seems a little short, kind of reminds me of Ziggy Hood from Missouri a couple of years ago, the Steelers selected him lates in round 1.

This caught my eye "His experience at the five-technique and nose tackle positions his season should intrigue 3-4 teams, as well."

A jack of all trades, that could be slotted anywhere across the line. I like the sounds of that.

The level of need will depend on how the Pats view the future of:

Ty Warren- A year out of football coming off of hip surgery, a possible cut if the don't think he'll recover to full health.

Ron Brace- Looks like a player when on the field.

Brandon Deaderick- Looked good when on field. A rookie being late multiple times is inexcusable. May not have the commitment to be counted on or may smarten up and have a 10 year career, unknown at this point.

Mike Wright- A concussion lasting this long is cause for concern.

Myron Pryor- Back issue

Gerard Warren- Unsigned for 2011

Kade Weston, Daryl Richard- Can they be NFL players?

I am not an expert on this guy by any means.. but what about Marvin Austin? .. I know there is some baggage for sure but the dood is a beast.. is he a 3-4 end though? 6-4ish 310-315

Fairley is officially coming out, not that it's a shocker. Too bad the Raiders couldn't have obliged and totally tanked the season.

I view it as the highest need on the team, by far. There really aren't as many as there seems. The majority of the DT/DEs fit far better is a 4-3 than the Pats 3-4.
The window to stock-up at this position is also rather small from what I can see. There are a bunch this year, and some more next year. Then it seems there will be very few for the next two or three years.

The kids I think would fit this year are Dareus, Watt, Jordan, probably Heyward, Wilkerson, and maybe Guy a little later.

They really need to get one of these guys. Then get another one early next year. They really don't need anymore TSATW DL picks late in the draft. They have plenty of those.

I very strongly dislike Ballard. I thin the less heralded guy to keep an eye on right now is Muhammad Wilkerson of Temple. He's my pick right now at #32 after Aldon Smith at #17

Let's examine what BB has traditionally looked for when selecting 3-4 DE's early in the draft.

Important note: I will limit the discussion to the positional skills, we all know how BB prefers guys with great intangibles, high character, football intelligence, etc. etc. etc.

Specific to the 3-4 DE position, BB likes guys that can hold their ground on running plays, but athletic enough to possess lateral agility. Absolutely must hold ground at the POA, occupy as many blockers as possible, let the LBers clean up. Play with low pad level while controlling two gaps, requires strong hands and players that can use their hands effectively. BB usually prefers 300 plus pound guys guys with a wide base and really strong legs, but again they must possess lateral agility.

Because DE's have to control the B abd C gaps on thier side, they are usually matched up with OT's, so BB prefer DE's with length.

Some skills others might value, BB tends to not place a large amount of importance on. For example quickness at the snap. Gap shooters need not apply. Gap discipline is more important.

Functional DE's (Ty Warren) must be able to occupy at least a single blocker . All-Pro DE's (Seymour) require at least two blockers.

BB has historically tended to take athletic DT's and convert them. Some like Seymour took a half season to train. Some like Warren took a full season to train. Some like Hill, never got a chance to show if they were players.

BB seems to prefer taking these type guys either very early or very late in the draft. But he never reaches (on the other hand he will trade up for DE's) and it appears to be an easy projection for him as to which guys can play DE for us. Overall I think BB places a high value on DEs and likes to have the funnel full of trainee replacements in case someone goes down.

I very strongly dislike Ballard. I thin the less heralded guy to keep an eye on right now is Muhammad Wilkerson of Temple. He's my pick right now at #32 after Aldon Smith at #17

With Fox installing a 4-3 in Denver, you would think they are off the board for Dareus now, and moving toward Bowers or Fairley.

Shermur is probably going to install a 4-3 in Cleveland.

So if Dareus slides by Dallas, who needs big time O Line and secondary help, could he fall to us?
