Will McCourty ever return some kicks?

He was supposed to be a ridiculously skilled kick returner coming out of college, right? I know that it's not worth risking injury and losing him on defense, and there is Brandon Tate, but is there any chance of him returning a few kicks? On a side note, Devin Hester was drafted as a CB and has become one of the best kick returners of all time, although we all know he's a WR now.

He's too valuable for our defense to play special teams.

Edelman gets hurt and the offense is VERY slightly damaged

McCourty gets hurt and the defense is destroyed

Enuff said here.....

I think its just simply that Tate is better. I know his two KR TDs were early in the year and it doesnt seem like he has done much since then but I think he still the biggest threat and I know some kickers have tried to keep it away from him.

Quite a few teams have kicked away from Tate at times. But KR is a team effort, not just the runner. Needs the blocks, vision, and speed.

Based on 40 times and what I've seen on the field his highest gear is probably better than anyone on the team, except maybe Slater or Butler.

Based on what we've seen from preseason (two returns to midfield on two attempts) and interception returns, he seems to be an excellent return man. Follows his blockers and finds daylight without dancing or hesitating. He might be better than Tate, and I don't want to find out because we need him on D.

Does Revis return kicks? No.
Could he? I'm sure he could.
I wouldn't want my #1 cb risking injuries there.

I have to be honest. I don't want to see McCourty returning kick offs.. ever.

I never heard he was a skilled returner. I heard that he was an amazing gunner, which is what ESPN said he was only going to be his rookie year. Well, they were wrong. But, from my knowledge, he was never a kick returner.

You might want to reassess that position because of this.

I believe Edelman's second on the depth chart for reasons already mentioned, followed by McCourty.

Both our kick and punt returners have touchdowns. Tate has 3 if you want to count preseason, Edelman has 2 if you want to count one reversed by a penalty. Point is, they know how to find the endzone, our return game is fine.

The Pats don't play scared. If the Patriots Play Brady when the game is well in hand, then why can't McCourty return kicks.

Can anyone tell me the last kick returner who missed a game due to injury? Not just for the pats, but for anyone?

Returning punts is more dangerous IMO, but even then they have Welker return punts.

This. He is probably the one guy besides wilfork that would utterly destroy our defense should he be injured right now.

Oh, there is absolutely no doubt to that. Our return game is great. I just wanted to bring up the topic because McCourty was thought to be a good kick returner coming out of the draft.

I think it just goes with the saying 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.

As long as our CB corps is as thin as it is, I can't see McCourty returning kicks for this season. Next season, when Bodden returns, McCourty could be a possibility, particularly if Tate either gets injured or suddenly sucks at it.
