Its nice to see McCourty getting good ink and he definitely deserves recognition but Suh is the defensive rookie of the year.

pFF is so hit or miss....

this needless to say is a hit

ps, they rate Gronk the 5th best rookie

Why is that?

And yet they don't have Tom Brady ranked in the top 20 in the Offensive Player of the Year race. That site is a joke.

I don't know if you watched any Lions games this year but Suh was a man against boys from day one. I'm not taking anything away from McCourty he had an AWESOME year but Suh was dominant from the first snap this year. He totally changed the Lions Run D.

Suh was a playmaker who wasn't consistently dominant. McCourty was both a playmaker and very consistent.

I can understand this. The guy has 10 sacks on the year, too.
But all things being equal, I would take 7 interceptions over 10 sacks any day. Plus there is the fact that Devin pretty much shuts his side of the field down for opposing offenses as Suh pretty much shuts his side of the line for opposing rushers.
I like McCourty over Suh by a hair.

McCourty's in the last 8 games. 36 tackles, 1, sack, 2 FFs, 5 picks and 10 PDs.

He keeps that up hes a DPoY candidate.

He's too good for that site anyway :)

We all want McCourty win, and I hope he does, but looking at it from a non-Pats fan perspective, it might just be Suh. The guy changed the entire defense, gave it a face. I mean, think about it, we've had a shut down secondary for the past decade. When we lost Ty Law, Assante Samuel became one of the league's sharpest ballhawks. McCourty kinda reminds me of Ty Law. The Lions, though? They downright sucked. He IS that defense.

We're back to defending 1/2 the field again ... like the good old Ty Law days. I'd say Samuel but he couldn't play the run ... Ty Law was a 4 down player.

I'll say on Suh.

From 2009 to 2010, the Lions...

-Won 4 more games
-Allowed a full touchdown less a game
-Sacks went from 26 to 44
-Yards allowed per game went from 392 to 343
-Defensive Qb rating went from 107 to 89.1
-INTs went from 9 to 14

There is a big reason why in the last 8 games, QB passer rating against this defense is 56.2.

McCourty. Taking away an opposing WR from a QB's progressions cannot be understated.

McCourty had a hell of a year, but this is from PFF.

It doesn't count for anything. Hell, as bad as that site is for analysis, this could end up counting against the kid.

And I'll reply with

From 2009 to 2010, the Patriots...

-Won 4 more games
-INTs went from 18 to 25, 1st in the NFL
-QB rating allowed dropped from 81.7 to 81.2. I know it's not a big difference but this defense and secondary is very young and had growing pains.

I also think it's a bit illusive to credit Suh with the passing stats and not look at the rushing stats.

2009 Lions 126.6 ypg 4.4 ypa
2010 Lions 124.9 ypg 4.5 ypa

So although the 2009 Lions gave up a couple more yards per game on the ground, they allowed less yardage per attempt than the Lions with Suh. It's pretty safe to say that the ground defense has hardly been impacted by Suh's presence.

To sum up:
Suh's present resulted in more sacks on QBs.
He didn't affect the run game much if at all. That aspect of his game is pretty disappointing for a DL. I'm sure there were other parts of the Lions that were bad too so the blame isn't entirely on him. But neither did he 'raise' the level of play of the Lion's overall run defense.

McCourty's presence vaulted the Pats to #1 in the NFL in INTs and 1st in turnover ratio. He only helped lower the overall opponent passer rating a smidgen.
So now you have the quandry of which came first - the dominant passrusher or the dominant DB. Each affects the game in different ways. But consider that 7 INTs are definitely 7 turnovers. 10 sacks are not equal to 10 turnovers. Both are very valuable defensive players and you can make a compelling argument for either one of them.

Just had the same thought myself. I'd actually count it as a slight against him myself when they pick him.

Sadly, the only reason that McCourty was selected by PFF was so that sucker-mediots would re-post their findings since it's a non-Suh pick.

Same reason they took Rodgers.

This site offers no value if they come to the same conclusions that all the other analysts do, obviously.

The fact is, it doesn't matter how slow or how many times a fan with no football experience watches a game, they can't "grade" the players playing in it, particularly off of TV tape. The site is flawed - and worthless.

I like McCourty, but Suh has made a bigger impact. He's the guy that offenses have to gameplan around.
