1) SPIKES IS BACK
This is a major plus. Wilfork, Mayo and Spikes in the middle on run downs is major improvement.

1) WRIGHT has not been here for 2 months. Besides, he isn't a key part of the run defense. Eric Moore has been a fine addition that makes us forget Wright. Yes, Wright is a serious loss, but a pretty normal one.

2) BRACE has had a reasonable season, but was his play much better than Pryor or Deaderick who will now get more reps?

3) We need five DL's to be able to have our best schemes. Those 5 are Wilfork, Warren, Pryor, Deaderick and Love. We carried seven defensive backs precisely so that we would have the ability to have a 5 man rotation at this point. Deaderick has been a starter. Love is OK as our #5 as a DT. Our OLB's are well suited to be DE's in the sub packages. The addition of Moore has been awesome.

We are playing DL with 5 players who have played all year. We have our two best performers healthy (Wilfork and G. Warren).

Hopefully Spikes isn't rusty. He'll definitely help in the run defense.

The loss of Brace shouldn't be underestimated though. He was probably our best DE against the run. I wonder if Love might play nose and they'll put Vince at end to compensate, or whether Deaderick takes Brace's spot.

Wright's absence won't be felt in the run game, though he was our best interior pass rusher. But we've found a way to manage. I wonder if Vince will get more reps too. He picked up two sacks against the Dolphins, might be ready for more.

Eric Moore and Mike Wright don't play the same position

Brace has the potential to be an excellent run stopping DL but never really put it together this season. His playing time has been very, very limited. He seems able to have an impact, but the season we had didnt have an awful lot to do with his contributions.

May not really even need 5, or at least the 5th is no more than a few snaps to give rest.
We use 2 DL on about 2/3 of the downs and 3 on about 1/3.

If you hate the DL we had all year, then there is something to complain aobut. If you are happy with the DL all year, there is nothing to see here.

Yeah. Brace started playing much better in the 2nd-half of the season. He will be missed..

Key is for Spikes to step-up. If we stop the Jets' run, Jets' must rely on Sanchez, and we know that is not what the Jets want...

Re: Our Run Defense Is Better Than In 4 Weeks

A) IMHO, Love has NOT looked very good at nose.

B) Wilfork will continue to get more reps than a patriot NT has ever had.

I agree. We can depend on four almost all game. The 5th needs to be available and to not be a major liability.

the jets really didnt try to run the ball on us early in the game and tried to win with sanchez .I think this time they will try and establish the run first and foremost.

Against the run, yes, his play WAS that much better than Pryor (who is really a pass rushing specialist) and Deaderick (who is getting better against the run, but is still only a rookie). I have to wonder how many times we'll be seeing Love at NT with Wilfork lining up at LDE and Deaderick lining up at RDE. IMO, that would be our best option for defending the Jets' running game.

Actually, they did. The Jets 1st & best drive in that game featured 60% runnning plays after a deep attempt on the first play. Their second drive was a 3 & out, starting with a run. Their 3rd drive featured runs on 4 of 6 plays. After that, it was 24-3 and that's all she wrote. But they definitely tried to run early.

It seems that whenever Love was put at NT and Wilfork moved over, the other team ran in down our throats until Wilforkn was moved back to NT. Perhaps I have a faulty or selective memory.

In any case, I do expect to see Deaderick getting more significant reps than Love, but we'll see. I suspect out best run defense is Warren, Wilfork and Deaderick.

That's my top 3 against the run, too...but I liked how they looked lining up as Wilfork, Warren, Deaderick.

this is where i think the jets can exploit us.

the jets are going to try to run the ball down our throats. meaning, spikes will be in the game a lot. at the same point, i think the jets will like a Keller/Spikes matchup in coverage. i think the jets are going to try and create formations where this is the case.

so i think spikes is going to have to be prepared to guard keller.

I think Pats play a cover safety such as Page a bit more than. He can hold Keller in check.

Do you really expect that we will play a defense that has Spikes in man to man coverage on Kellar?
It would probably require 2 dbs blitzing
