I wanted to start this thread to get input/ideas etc. on preparation for the Jets.

This board always has great info from a knowledgeable fan base and I'm curious to see what things we can do defensively to shut out the Jets.

I'd like any tips or additional info on how we should plan for the Jets.

My observations:

Cromartie on KR's is scary. He's a big target but very fast and doesn't dance around. We have to hit him early or he'll have success. Graham is not Gostkowski- he doesn't kick as deep and Rex knows this.
When he's a CB we can exploit the quick inside slant w/ Welker/Edelman/Branch/Woodhead...name your poison. Welker could beat him all day. But I'm not focusing on offense just D.

B. Smith and the Wildcat formation is another offensive/STthreat.

The Jets showed again that they can run efficiently.
This helped Sanchez in the 2nd half by taking pressure off him (passing) and by exploiting the Colts protection of the middle of the field. This ate up clock and kept Manning off the field. LT needs to be accounted for. Broken plays resulted in short dishes from Sanchez to LT in an uncovered open field. LT can hit the edge hard too so we'll need our ILBS and DB's to get in on EVERY play-especially to hit hard on EVERY play.

Braylon Edwards is a big, braggadocios drama queen who has talent. I would like to see him shut down like Reggie Wayne. Throw to Keller-I don't care-Keller won't win the game.

Crotchery has always been a 3rd and long threat always making clutch plays (I don't want to see D. Tyree type stuff)

also we have S. Holmes. Who do you think will cover him?

We saw extra tackles/TE's etc...from Snottenheimers offense....the Wildcat as I mentioned above-What are your ideas or input on how to snuff these guys?

We saw an erratic Snachez at times when the heat was on. He can scramble and I'm hoping this will generate at least 2 INT's for our defense. Tipped passes, fumbles etc...I'll take them. The Jets were lucky last night-they could have been picked more than once. This is good news for us...because Sanchez is not Manning and Bill preps for QB's pretty well.

Most importantly our D needs to STOP the RUN!

What are your ideas/opinions/premonitions/etc?

Here's to a brutal and violent game:cool:
I hope we shut 'em down!

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

The Jets will probably try to spread it out getting us into our sub-package. Their best chance to win is running the ball. But, they need to have us in sub to do it effectively. The Jets can run on passing downs or even non passing downs out of one back, so they will need early success throwing the ball to get us into sub packages to try to shorten the game with the run.

Must win first down. Whether it's a run or a pass. you can't spend the night in 2nd and 5. It really opens up the playbook for them. Win first down and take away the check down in the passing game and you increase your chances.

Thanks for the response and I agree. They will spread it out and they will try to run the ball down our throats. I'm anxious to see what DL pkgs are put out there for our D. I agree with 2nd and 5 comment. They have nothing to lose and we'll see some trick plays/fake punts/onside kicks (GB)/wildcat/wild throws/bombs etc...the Jets have nothing to lose. I hope we can limit their offense (the Colts did ok)-so we should do better and not allow them to "open up their playbook."

We need 4 quarters of D

Stack the box and force the midget QB to win the game

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

The jets didn't show that they can run effectively, any playoff team should be able to run against the dolts, I've been saying in every thread stating the dolts should be feared. They can't stop the run, and their defense is not that good, and the jets only managed to put up 17 points on them.

lol....we all know HE can't....but their running game looks nasty.
We need to fill those gaps!

Don't you wanna see Sanchez get pounded all night?
I do.

Priority #1: stop the run for the entire game.

Excellent point that they only put 17 on the board against the Colts D.
I hope we get 5-6 TDs! 1 or 2 defensive ones too

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

The Myth of Jets running defense is realized after playing Bills , Colts in the last weeks. I do not think colts and bills are great running team.

We will miss our bigger DE here for sure.Vince is the biggest and warren is also big but a little older. Our rest of the DE are all smaller .

Stop the Run
Stop the Slants and Seam route. Sanchize always lets it rip it straight down as those are easy throws.make is make the hard throws.
Play Guyton more as we need underneath coverage and TE coverage support.

Mayo/Guyton need to defend the middle.

What about Spikes...think he'll play a crucial role?
What do you think about Keller?
We know that's Sanchez's fave go to.

We're pretty safe on the passing game unless Rex can sign this guy...

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

Since the CLE game, the Pat's run D has been allowing 4.3ypc. Not great but by no means terrible but I'd argue that they are better than that as the highest outputs over that period is vs NY on 12/3 and BUF- two blowouts where the D was playing a 4-deep zone 1/2 of the game.

I am not worried about the Jets running game. They'll get their yards but it's not like the NYJ are the second coming of the 1978 Patriots and accrue 250+ yards on 50 carries.

If the Pats get up 21-7, it's over. Sanchez is not capable of making downfield plays vs this defense or any defense for that matter. The Jets are #18th in # of plays 20+ yards or more, 25th in yards per attempt and 30th in comp%. Simply put, Sanchez is not an accurate QB and cannot dictate defenses.

Add in the fact that he is facing the #1 defense in INTs and 7th in passes defensed, additional variables are added to the analysis.

The key is Sanchez. If he plays like Matt Flynn or the two times in NY vs NE and makes smart reads and converts on 3rd down, then the game will be close. Trying to be unbiased, I just don't see it happening.

lol....we'll have Edwards and Holmes covered but I worry about Crotchery snatching some bombs....he's known for it

Do you think Spikes return will make the diff. on run D?
Great points RW!
we need to execute and not F.U.
i still can't forget the Giants SB...lol

Spike is more effective in 1st and 2nd downs but i still think spike was very effective playing behing some 330LB DT and now he will be behing 300LBDT .He has not practiced / watched film /coached for 4 weeks. No one know what he did for 4 weeks away from the team. I will have to hold judgement. He seems so immature.

Keller- A reason i said we need more from guyton and mayo. Guyton drops so fast and has some big wing span a reason he snaps Interception. He run with keller and cover shallow areas. Also mayo dropping shallow and near LOS guyton drops even deeper complimenting mayo. Also a reason i slants and seam routes. Its not only keller but he brings edwards also in the seam as those are easier throws.

Vince is DT by definition.

Off the field we can agree he needs to use better judgement. Give me one example of how Spikes is immature on the football field.

If you don't think Spikes has watched film during his little sabbatical, you are kidding yourself.

Spikes plays the Mike. He is the downfield hammer. He doesn't need fatties to gobble up blockers as his role is to explode into them and shut down the stratigh-line runs wheras Mayo plays the WIL where you need the line to gobble up the pulling OLs, and allow him to to go from hash to hash and sideline to sideline for that matter.

It's Cotchery,,,,Jericho Cotchery.

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

The priority of the Pats D will be to stop the run and make Sanchez beat them. However what is really going to dictate what the Jets try on offense will be the scoreboard. If they get behind by 10 + points they'll need to open things up.

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

Personally, I would consider doing it exactly like they did it last time. The Pats were in sub packages most of the game with five or more DBs on the field. The Jets had a great rushing game against the Pats (31 carried for 152 and 4.9 YPC), but only scored 3 points. Sanchez was picked 3 times because he will make a lot of mistakes.

Re: Defending the NYJ Offense

Sanchez's shoulder may be a key issue. If he misses anywhere near the amount of open recievers he missed yesterday, they will be lucky to score 10 points against our defense. He threw so many high passes I lost count, even some of the catches/drops were high. With half decent QB play the Jets would've put up at least 30 against the Colts.
