What I seem to notice here at the start of the draft is that it would cost a lot to move up. So better value is obtained by trading down.

First I'll trade #17 (950) and #74 (220) for #21 (800) and #53 (370).

After moving down, now I want to move up back up in round 1.

I'll trade #32 (590) and #96 (116) for #26 (700).

I know it's way early. But it's fun to look back sometimes and think, what was I thinking? Or hey I was a genius, so called that pick! ^_^

Obviously it's very convenient to be able to trade using the value chart. I know trades won't ever work out quite this perfectly in real life. But hey, it's just for fun.

Anyways here was the rationale behind my picks.

#21 Cameron Heyward DE. Yes, I've heard about the motor issues. But this guy has the ability to just dominate and command double teams. Great frame, size, and power for the position. I don't care if he only got 2.5 sacks his senior season. With the Pats the DL's job is more about occupying blockers and collapsing the pocket when you can. I think he can bring that.

#26 Kenny Tate S. Just a freak of a safety. I mean I've seen big safeties who can hit hard. But finding one who can also cover? Now that's rare. I could see BB using this guy in all sorts of evil genius ways. Hell, he even seemed to be a pretty good blitzer. So that's just one more way to pressure the QB. The unexpected safety blitz.

#46 Derek Sherrod OT. Light is getting old and I'm not sure how much money he wants. Sherrod and Vollmer could make for a good pair of bookends. Even if we keep Light for another year or two, developing the talent and depth now never hurts. Brady is the Franchise and needs to be protected.


#53 Michael Floyd WR. I know, we don't really need a WR. But the guy was just such good value here. Good size at 6'3, good hands, knows our offense because he played in Charlie Weiss' system. Really he could turn into an instant starter for us and give Brady yet another big tall weapon in the red area as BB likes to call it.

#58 K.J. Wright LB. I don't know a lot about this kid but if his measurements are accurate. IE at least 6'3 and 250 lbs he is big enough for the New England system. He's a senior, team captain, and a leader. Can always use that type of player. Now I don't know if he can transition to our OLB spot. That's always tough. But he sounds like he has the athleticism to be an all-around player, defending run/pass/and rushing the qb. If he really can run a 4.6 I think he could pull it off. But even if he runs a 4.7 that would still be faster than Cunningham right? If we get ourselves a Cunningham clone, I think that would be pretty good.

Anyways I reserve the freedom to change my mind. But I wouldn't be unhappy with this type of haul. The Pats still have enough picks left to get another OL, CB, or RB prospect in the later rounds.

Nice to see some attention being given to KJ Wright. The guy just plays. And what he actually does on the field appears to me to be just what an OLB would do in our system. His teammate, Chris White, seems likely to make a fine MLB for some team, too.

I haven't seen Wright ranked as high as the 2nd round many places. Yet. He certainly could rise that far by draft day. Not sure I'd prefer him over Jeremy Beal. Be nice if we could get both, somehow.

Both these guys, though, demonstrate to me that we probably don't need to spend a first rounder to get a high-quality OLB.

From this I think we got the best DE available (and Cameron Jordan who some have predicted to go in the high 2nd low 1st), our pass rusher beal, a talented RB to take taylors place, a developmental interior lineman and a young CB who many on this board have wanted in the 1st.

The Draft Value Chart needs to be updated. The league has changed from a superstar dominated field to depth and balance. The other day, someone wrote that the Pats could trade #17, their first, and #33 for the fourth overall pick, according to the chart. Are you insane? It's obvious that the league has evolved since Jimmy Johnson wrote this thing up, and even with the new rookie wage cap, it still won't be close.

#17 – Patriots trade #17 overall to Seattle for their 1st round pick (# 21) and the 4th round pick (#98) they gave up for Deion Branch and a 7th round pick in 2012. Seattle selects QB Jake Locker.

#21 – Gabe Carimi OT/G Wisconsin – Can kick inside to play Guard until Light leaves.

#32 – Patriots trade #32 and #128 to Cleveland for # 37, #101 and #165. Cleveland selects a WR that has fallen and jumps ahead of other teams that needs one like Buffalo and Cincinnati.

#33 – Kenny Tate S Maryland – Replacement for BM.

#37 – Muhammed Wilkerson DE/DT Temple – 5 Technique DE

#55 – Mikel LeShoure RB Illinois. Trade up with Philly giving up #64 and #101 and getting back the 2012 conditional pick for Tracy White. Moving ahead of teams like Green Bay and New Orleans that need RB’s.

#74 – Pierre Allen DE/OLB Nebraska – Has Leadership skills BB likes and can set the edge.

#96 – Trade one of the last picks for Day 2 for a 2012 2nd rounder.

That's the 3rd time I've seen Wilkerson mentioned in this thread so I decided to look into him.

This article seems pretty positive.

At 6'5 305 he certainly has the size we're looking for in a 3-4 DE.
My primary concerns.
1. Level of competition in the MAC isn't very strong.
2. Does he have the strength to take on double teams.
3. Can he play 5 tech or is he more suited for 1-gap attacking defenses?

Just for fun check this out. Temple practices appear to be really intense and fun. Wow. Skip to about 4:00 mark to get to Wilkerson's interview. I do like how he deflects praises and gives credit to the coaching and the other players. Textbook BB talk. And yeah keep watching. The practice footage is fun!

Page is a FA next year and was looking for a big payday from Kansas City. He may go elsewhere. Sanders and Meriweather are only signed through 2011. Chung and Sergio Brown through 2012 so there is need to find a young guy to take over.

I didn't really see what Meriweather did this year to earn "Pro Bowl" honors but it may work out for the Pats if they can get some team to trade for him.

I would rather have Sanders, Chung, Brown and a rookie. Kenny Tate was BPA pick and it could easily have been Rahim Moore or Quinton Carter/Eric Hagg in later rounds.

Correct but this is a fantasy scenario so in my draft a new CBA is in place.
