Nothing beats having a rival who wants to be hollywood. This guy loves having has been famous people buying stakes in the team. The guy just tries to. Hire the big nane rather then the right guy. Now apparently is willing to pay Harbaugh 7 mill a year ( more then BB ?) because he did good in a relatively weak Pac 10. Cant believe people still go for the big name college coach. Anyways thanks for ross for always following the hype and big name at the time.

I'm loving how Ross is letting Sparano just sit thee while he public is going after his next coach :)

I think that this is the sort of thing that disgusts BB.. Too many NFL owners have no clue how to handle personnel issues..

You just don't do to a person what Ross is doing to Sporano. It's an insult. The fire the guy and be done with it. If Miami fails to get Harbaugh (which I believe they will fail) then attempt to keep Sporano, you know his heart won't be in it..

You would think the guy who bought the team from the guy who made a fool of himself with Saban would know better. But then watching the equally highly touted all pro fins rebuild turn into a glorified tuna melt just proves there is no magic formula.

One of the interesting aspects of all this is Tuna had faith in Sporano and gave him relative autonomy. He had no faith in Ireland who struggled to make any decision without Bill signing off on it. Not the kind of situation Harbaugh will flourish in. Needs an experienced GM like his brother basically succeeds with... He tried to get Lombardi in with the 49'ers but they were determined to retain someone who was part of the longstanding problems in SF...

When your goal is to rebuild a franchise and change the culture you have to start from the top down or the guys below that won't buy in. And you have to have a well thought out strategy and plan and be patient and committed and willing to avoid the pitfall of shortcuts in order to lay a solid foundation. We got lucky in 2001 that Brady was already in the pipeline and better than Bill probably dared to dream. Absent a franchise QB the pressure to post a winning record to save jobs or soothe easily bruised egos has derailed many an intended rebuild. We were fortunate Saban chose not to pull the trigger on Brees, opting instead for Culpepper...

In many ways the wildcat was Miami's costly downfall...a shortlived gimmick intended to create the smoke and mirrors perception of Parcellian success. Because three seasons into the Tuna resurrection they still don't have a QB or a well developed offense. And in the AFC where you have the likes of Brady, Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Flacco and even Cassel in the top tier and a few second tier guys like Palmer, Sanchize and Schaub who are capable of winning to an extent their situation limits, it's gonna take a Hurculean effort to just contend for a wildcard berth for the forseeable future. And that being the case the tenure of next HC of the Dolphins will be as shortlived as the last couple...

Add to that the pressure to sufficiently win in the process so you can market the franchise at a level that justifies the ginormous investment the new owner made in acquiring it and you have a recipe for continued disaster for all involved.

Ross is an idiot. He should just fire Sporano and move on. What happens if he can't get a big name Gruden, Harbaugh, or Cowher? Can he keep Sporano now after Ross basically told him that he would get rid of him if Ross could find a better head coach? If he does keep Sporano, do we chock up 2011 as a lost year for the Dolphins since Sporano would have lost his lockerroom.

This is what happened with Cutler in Devner! JMcD went after MFC and Cutler didn't like it and wanted to leave!

I think Ross won't get anyone, and Sporano will leave :)

Well said. This is SO basic I'm surprised more owners don't "get it". What prevents them is (a) ego inflated by their self perception of financial genius and (b) many of them got their fortunes via fortuitous circumstances and not the hard way. In my experience in the high tech computer communications industry I saw many guys who fortuitously became worth 10s of millions who were simply in the right place at the right time but were complete doofuses.

the pats wont have to worry about miami until Brady and Belichick are gone from the leauge... that is how screwed up parcells left this mess....

Can Sparano find another head coaching gig? Would be funny if he just stayed because it was the best job he could get.

You have to wonder about a coach that starts his pro career chasing max dollars. Putting money aside, I would think the path of turning around a team and getting that team into the playoffs is much easier in the NFC West. Expecting a new coach breaking in an uknown QB to get past the Patriots to win the AFC East seems unrealistic. So essentially, Miami would be chasing two Wild Card slots against the 11 other non dvision winners...those odds blow, especially with two yearly losses vs New England (my homer cap is on). To win the AFC East...14-15 wins. To win NFC West...8-9 wins. May be this guy is just the latest "name" to suck a Miami owner dry for a quick score

One of the biggest stories that flew under the radar was the divorce between Ross and Parcells. Giving up two higher round draft picks for headcase Brandon Marshall, had to be Ross' work.

What's sad, from a neutral NFL perspective, is that the Dolphins were only a few tweaks away from becoming a SB team. They already had a SB caliber defense. They only needed a new QB (Henne's not the answer) and more depth in the O-line.

From a Pats fan's perspective, I say, welcome to the AFC East Mr. Ross! :D

:yeahthat: :ditto: :agree:

And Harbaugh asking for 7 million thats absurd, i saw his resume it wasn't that impressive considering what college coaches have failed in the NFL like Spurrier and Saban. Of course he'll get it, and even if he fails he'll be set for life financially.

I'm sure he'd be glad to pack his bags, except for the little problem that he's under contract. That's why his employer thinks he can get away with this -- the professional equivalent of running around town with a series of women on your arm while your wife waits at home.

Gotta love this formula......A team with a crappy QB hoping the acquisition of a high priced FA WR/#1 draft pick WR solves the crappy QB issue. Does it ever work? A crappy QB is a crappy QB.

As the dofins close in on their third target of choice for QB (apparently Cowher and Gruden said no mas to $7M) they are locked in a bidding war approaching $8M per with another historically mismanaged team of the decade who had Harbaugh within their grasp had they not decided to promote a GM from within the mess first... Gotta love how the Miami GM who had more to do with this teams downfall than it's HC is on the recruiting tour trying to save his own ass by landing Ross the marquee of the moment HC candidate who would rather have his own GM (he wanted Lombardi) on board.

Like Pioli says, regardless of where the power ultimately rests a GM has to work for his HC and populate the roster to fit his system and scheme. Matching total strangers is foolsplay.

The Dolphins have lacked ingenuity for years. They're completely driven by media-hyped "if it glitters, it's gold" players and coaches. I've yet to see them get a bargain on a player or coach; it's always that they win the bidding wars, and never that they actually develop players. Okay, Cameron Wake is the lone exception. If you look at a lot of their failures in recent years, it's because they always bite hard. Not that Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall are not good players, but what exactly did the Dolphins do to get them? Paid them more than any other team. Big deal; that won't get you far in the salary cap world. I'm sure that they'll bite hard for Jim Harbaugh for the same reason they overpay for free agents: because the media says it's the right move. Their draft picks are mostly flashy players as well.
